To ask if you are still avoiding covid?

I know it’s everywhere but are people still avoiding seeing friends / family if they know it’s definitely covid? Or is no one worried anymore?
I feel like I wouldn’t want to put myself in the line of fire knowingly as it’s made me bed bound twice - not seriously ill or anything but like a flu - but I don’t know if I’m over the top about it given that it’s now just everywhere in the community anyway.

I don't really know anyone who tests for it anymore so I (and they) wouldn't have a clue if they had Covid.

Also, even if I did test, I have to go to work with it if I'm well enough.

I have it atm, I really only tested out of curiosity as otherwise I would have just thought it was a very bad cold, it doesn’t feel like when I had covid back in 2021. I don’t really know many people who test now. If we didn’t have any tests in the house to catch my eye I wouldn’t have thought to go and get any.

I had to check if my work has any policies, we don’t any more but it feels a bit weird to think of going in to work when I know I have it! Not an issue at the moment tho because I’m too rough to work anyway. But I think a lot of places where I live basically say it’s fine to come in if you feel well enough.

I do feel bad tho - I flew to London, went to lots of crowded places including the tube, restaurants, and a concert, then flew back so was then in a busy airport and a tiny plane. I didn’t start showing any symptoms of anything until the third day of my trip and I didn’t know it was Covid until I got home but I think I must have had it the whole time and so may well have passed it on. But I just had no idea. I haven’t even heard anyone mention Covid in ages where I live, I just don’t think it’s on people’s radar anymore.

smooththecat · 02/10/2024 02:10

I feel really fucked off if people risk making me ill, Covid or no, I don’t want to catch your shit and lose a week or so.

coxesorangepippin · 02/10/2024 02:08

I never think about it

Tangwystl · 02/10/2024 02:04

Catsmere, I got six boxes of five tests on Amazon for $80 a little while ago

HeliotropePJs · 02/10/2024 01:55

I avoid any contagious illness, if I can. I don't know if I've had Covid, yet, but I'd rather not expose myself unnecessarily, same as I avoid the flu and even colds unless there's a very good reason to risk catching it.

SummerSnowstorm · 02/10/2024 01:54

I'm avoiding it if possible. Though also avoid any bad cough/cold/sickness bug etc in the same way.

FFS

yes, we are still avoiding covid and anyone who knowingly exposes others to covid or any other serious infectious disease is an asshole.

some of us have vulnerable household members.

Some of us turned out to be especially sensitive ourselves, even when not predicted. I’m 5 months in and still not fully recovered. I had an oxygen monitor at home because of DD’s asthma and it’s why I got to stay home watching my o2 sats hover just above the level needing to be admitted. I spent 3 weeks barely able to sit up in bed.

I agree. So sorry about you having long Covid. It's terrible.

Russiandollsaresofullofthemselves · 02/10/2024 01:46

i had it last month and stayed home.i was so ill i couldn’t go out even if i wanted to!

worriedhidinginplainsight · 02/10/2024 01:45

I don't take any specific precautions against catching covid, and I live my life as I did pre-2020.

I have only had covid once (that I know of), in 2023, so after the testing and isolation rules were lifted. But I did the test because I felt more unwell than I ever had been before in my adult life. And aswell as the usual cold symptoms, I had some unusual /intense symptoms like burning skin, restless leg feelings throughout my whole body, 24/7 pouring with sweat, too weak to stand up for more than a few minutes, and insatiable hunger!. It was unlike any virus I had before and was more than the average cold!

I do not want to feel like that again so I do not want to be in an enclosed space with someone who has covid. I would be grateful if someone who thinks they might have it does a test and keeps away from me. If I had it again I would try not to pass it on. It was horrible.

But, no, I don't live in fear of Covid or make any adjustments to my life to avoid it.

Catsmere · 02/10/2024 01:44

It's different in Australia. We're still advised to self isolate for about a week if we get it. What annoys me is how much the RATs cost - $30 now! I caught it a month ago when I visited my mum at her nursing home. No symptoms for me, but I'm still positive. First time either of us had it, and Mum had a fever but is fine too (not bad for a 92 year old diabetic). You still see people wearing masks here, as I did while I was contagious. I don't think we're so blasé about it here.

Walkden · 02/10/2024 01:36

Well it's literAlly government policy that people catch it repeatedly so not actively avoiding it no. Often exposed at work where staff and pupils have COVID but attend anyway.

Would avoid older relatives for general visits but carry on regardless e.g. going on holiday flights etc. while COVID positive

It might be that eventually may come down with long COVID and obviously long term effects are still unknown but that is the world we live in.

I was due to have non-emergency surgery in an NHS hospital a couple of weeks ago, I needed to cancel due to childcare issues but on the morning I called to cancel I also tested covid positive.

When I called the hospital the nurse told me that they would have still performed the surgery even if I was covid positive... which surprised me.

I'm amazed that the hospital took that approach. I had surgery in the middle of July and had to test for two days before my operation and on the morning, as well as scrubbing myself with antibacterial wash for three days. I was also questioned about whether any family member had tested positive for Covid in the last two weeks. The nurses on the admissions ward were all wearing masks. I know that COVID was particularly rife in London a couple of months ago, so I suppose things may have relaxed a bit now.
My husband caught COVID for the first time just after my surgery and in the 48 years I've known him, I've never seen him so unwell. I can only remember him being in bed because of illness for one day in all those years, but he was unable to get up for over a week with COVID, and was really ill for two weeks.

I would most definitely do my best to avoid catching it again, and I wear a mask if I'm anywhere that is very crowded or on public transport.

x2boys · 02/10/2024 01:11

There are loads of nasty virus,s around at the moment I have had one for nearly two weeks although at the tail end now I did test as we had some from my sons special school, it was negative tbh ,I have felt far illler with whatever virus I had than when I actually tested positive with covid a couple of years ago ,if your ill avoid vulnerable people.

blackpear · 02/10/2024 01:05

I am avoiding it and test. I have vulnerable family members.

outforawalkbiatch · 02/10/2024 00:59

People knew before Covid to avoid me if they're ill so carrying on like that as usual
Booked my vaccine
Still get free tests

My workplace doesn't want people in who have covid so they can WFH or obviously off sick if too unwell. Same applies if you're full of a cold etc, work from home

Josette77 · 02/10/2024 00:47

I read this as " are you still avoiding conflict ?"

And thought damn straight I am.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/10/2024 00:42

I try to avoid any contagious illnesses, in that I won’t knowingly mix with someone who I know has one.

If they had a mild cold I probably wouldn’t even notice, but yes if someone said they had an illness I knew would make some people feel very ill I’d avoid.

Mycatisashit · 02/10/2024 00:41

I currently have covid so I won’t visit my dm or my dmil.

I feel so so ill and it’s been. Early two weeks. I have been food shopping and I still have to go to work so can’t avoid everyone.

TofuTart · 02/10/2024 00:40

I just go about life as usual, pre 2020.
I'm not hiding away from people, I'm just getting on with life.
If I knew someone had it though, of course I'd stay away as that's just common sense.
Just like I would if someone was ill in general/had a stomach bug or cold or whatever.

user1471453601 · 02/10/2024 00:39

Of cause I'm avoiding it, where I can. I was classed as clinical exceptionally vulnerable, so I was cautious then, as I am now.

My family and friends have known for years that a chest infection can land me in hospital, so they are super careful around me.

What's a cold for them, quickly turns into a chest infection for me.

So we are all used to (before covid) avoidance I these situations.

ThatAgileGoldMoose · 02/10/2024 00:32

Depends what you class as avoiding covid.

I avoid people who have obvious coughs and colds, (I didn't before the pandemic) but not specifically because I'm worried that I'll catch covid. If a colleague has come into work like that I open the door and big window to get plenty of ventilation and try to discretely keep my distance. I'm more conscious of decent hand hygiene than I was before the pandemic, though I'd say I've just brought it up to a good standard rather than anything excessive. I have far less colds than I used to and that is A-OK with me, colds, I have decided are rotten buggers, and I'd much prefer not to catch them.

Ohthatsabitshit · 02/10/2024 00:30

Quite a lot of people are still vaccinated against it, so obviously they’d avoid carriers.

IntriguingFactJumble · 02/10/2024 00:30

I'm more worried about getting the jab I've been offered, as I've found out I have heart issues in thr last year or so and the jabs can affect the heart. But I'll probably have the jab.

NannyGythaOgg · 02/10/2024 00:28

It's a virus. I would avoid any virus if I could, not just or specifically covid

Ubugly · 02/10/2024 00:25

Hard to avoid sometimes as some people don't have symptoms or pass on before symptoms occur. My colleague has it and then half the team have ended up positive.
