Dog came to our house viewing

Our estate agent brought a potential buyer round to view our house today who turned up with their dog. I saw them on the front door ring camera carry it in to our house but when I checked the back garden camera I could see it walking on our carpet!

We have a 5 year old and a 5 month old and it walked all over where the boys play (luckily most of their things were put away for the visit) and the estate agent knows this.

The dog also was carried into their bedroom and held above our baby’s cot.

if this hadn’t annoyed me enough when asked about it the estate agent lied and said the dog was carried the whole time. When I told her we can see it on the ring she said she’d make a note that no pets would be allowed on future viewings and that’s it ok as the dog didn’t go to the toilet in our garden.

I don’t think I’m being unreasonable but just wanted to gauge opinions before I speak to the agent properly tomorrow and whether that’s normal behaviour or is as bizarre as I think it is.

Unprofessional and disrespectful on behalf of the agent and, as others have said, why is it so normalised these days that when challenged about something, so many so called 'professionals' immediately go on the defensive, attempt to turn things around and try and put the onus on the wounded' party to make it appear that their complaints are in some way unreasonable or even strange and unnecessary?! Grrr! 😡
I would immediately sack them, complain to head office if there is one and put the house with another agent with the proviso NO ANIMALS in the house!!😱

JellyTipisthebest · 03/10/2024 00:28

I would change estate agents, what else are they going to lie about in the future to get a sale.

Ladyflipflop · 02/10/2024 23:08

Totally wrong in my opinion. Thats just rude and ignorant.
Who is to know that there are not some serious allergies?
Its your house until its sold!

sgtmajormum · 02/10/2024 23:02

Totally not acceptable!
I have a dog but I wouldn't even think to bring to a house viewing. That's just so entitled.
What if you were allergic to dogs?
Estate agents def need pulling up on this.

Dovecare · 02/10/2024 22:20

Sorry but I think you are a bit neurotic.

Saltedbutter · 02/10/2024 22:19

I’ve got more dogs than I can shake a stick at and even I’d be baffled and quite pissed off. Unless somebody has an allergy then I wouldn’t be too worried about the dog having been in the house though (haven’t read all 15 pages so apologies if this has been touched on).

I bring my dog to house viewings….7 figure properties…..

I do check with the agent though - whether or not it’s ok, it may be entitled of me, but at the price point I am looking at I don’t expect to hear a no 🤭

Edited

I don’t see what the price point has to do with it. Sellers of cheap properties are just as keen to sell as sellers of expensive ones.

PorridgeEater · 02/10/2024 21:57

Can you change your estate agent? I wouldn't want to be dealing with an agent who lied.

Ginburee · 02/10/2024 21:37

I wouldn't be impressed as we are all very allergic.
Put of interest, if allergic people were moving into a house where there had been dogs would it be acceptable to ask for the carpets to be cleaned before they moved in?

Makingachoice · 02/10/2024 21:02

I have dogs - completely unacceptable and I'd be dropping them and going with a different estate agent and telling the branch manager why.

BattenbergLoves · 02/10/2024 20:47

I’m a dog lover who has a dog, and I’m respectful of others who do not share my love for them. I would never assume my dog can go into my friends houses without asking let alone a strangers. I think a dog on a house viewing is utterly ridiculous! Why oh why would you bring your pet to view a house? Disrespectful and unnecessary. Find a new estate agent.

isthereaway · 01/10/2024 20:28

Not OK at all. One of your children might have a severely allergy for all anyone knows. If the EA is happy to lie about it I'd consider changing agents.

100% with you on this one. They do not deserve to get your commission.

Mirable · 02/10/2024 20:39

My son is allergic to dogs so I'd be so pissed off. I'd speak to her manager and maybe even HR because she lied. I cant risk my son having an allergic reaction 😡

Lively · 02/10/2024 20:11

We bought a house on the next road. When I walked round to view, our cat followed me. The seller wouldn’t allow the cat into the house, so the poor cat had to wait outside. Fortunately, the cat loved the house when we moved in.

HumberstoneNJ · 02/10/2024 20:10

How inappropriate, irresponsible and disrespectful.
I'd bill her for the cleaning! And email your complaint (expecting an email apology)

Beautifulweeds · 02/10/2024 20:08

We wouldn't take our dog, you just don't. Maybe they were viewing while out on a walk and house far away and the norm? X

Calliekins · 02/10/2024 19:59

I find it very interesting and quite bizarre actually that some of the answers here refer to dog lovers who'd think you were being unreasonable. As a dog owner and lover I can say I very much doubt that! My family and I own dogs however would I take them along if viewing a house for sale? Absolutely not. The same as I wouldn't want it done to my home. I find it odd that even the Estate Agent didn't question them on bringing their dog, they do say "none so queer as folk"!

Daisybridge · 02/10/2024 19:50

Unless pre agreed animals shouldn't be going into other people's houses

MoonGeek · 02/10/2024 19:36

I would be changing estate agents. Totally unacceptable.

LIJ · 02/10/2024 19:24

I’ve got 3 dogs. This behaviour is totally unacceptable. You need to have a strong “word” with the Agent.

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 02/10/2024 19:05

Maybe dog is checking for exes under the patio

ThePearlSloth · 02/10/2024 18:50

Well I said yabu but on reflection I think yanbu. Although I would be more upset about shoes on my carpets than dogs.

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 02/10/2024 18:50

That’s awful. My sympathies - I would be fuming. I don’t like dogs, and I really don’t understand why dogs seem to be in any pub/café/restaurant I have visited in recent years. There’s just no need.

TwistedWonder · 02/10/2024 18:44

Itisjustmyopinion · 02/10/2024 18:05

Can’t speak for the OP but yes I would be happy to let that potential owner not view and then offer if they insisted in bringing their dog with them

As I mentioned in a previous post I don’t allow dogs that belong to people I know in my home, I certainly wouldn’t allow a dog with someone I didn’t

If that means losing a sale then so be it. In fact we are putting our house up for sale next year and this thread has made me realise that you do have to stipulate things that you would think are obvious

Children can come and run around for as long as they want, dogs absolutely not

Agree. I don’t want animals in my house full stop. If a potential buyer is so entitled that they won’t view the house without bringing their dog then they won’t get through my front door. No ifs no buts.

Theres enough non entitled non bonkers buyers out there who understand animals aren’t humans and that others don’t have to accommodate their ‘fur babies’ 🤢

FeetLikeFlippers · 02/10/2024 18:42

An estate agent lied to you? Surely not!!!! Seriously though, I’d find another estate agent and tell this one exactly why - not just the dog being allowed in but also blatantly lying about it. A lot of them seem to think that lying is a perfectly normal and acceptable part of their jobs and they need to be told it’s not ok.
