My mum has bought DD a dress knowing we won’t like it.

It’s DD first birthday soon and my mum has asked me to collect an outfit from hers ready for DD birthday.

My mum was laughing as she said that neither me or DH will like it/to our tastes but in her eyes it’s lovely.

What planet would I dress my DD, on her first birthday, in an outfit that caused a round of laughter over.

One hand I could be polite and pretend that DD got it dirty or I could straight out refuse to accept it.

What a waste of money and material. If anything I’m actually quite annoyed.

I'm on the fence about the dress.

But of I'd bought her a party dress already, then I'd just say that. "Sorry, mum privileges, I get to choose, and I've got one"!

Do you get such twee stuff for boys? The DD isn’t a doll

Yes, this! It's hideous.

LaerealSilverhand · 01/10/2024 10:50

It's hideous but the real problem is that your mum takes positive joy in overstepping your boundaries. Just say no. Do NOT put DD in it and take photos just for the sake of a quiet life - it will only encourage her.

Itsmyshadow · 01/10/2024 10:50

I think it depends on what the expectation is for the outfit. If your mum is expecting that to be what DD wears for the day / for her birthday party / for a cake smash photo shoot then she is being very unreasonable. It’s your DD and it’s your right to choose her outfit for those.

If your mum would just like to see he in the outfit at some point then just put it on and take some pictures, no harm done.

AmeliaEarache · 01/10/2024 10:49

She thinks it’s adorable and thinks her granddaughter will look a picture in it. She also knows you’ll hate it.

But she’s not buying it for you, she’s buying it because she thinks it would be gorgeous on the baby.

Put her in it, take photos, job done.

If this is the worst outfit a relative sends, you’re escaping lightly. I speak from experience.

GreenWheat · 01/10/2024 10:49

It is indeed awful, but luckily babies grow fast. Wear for a few photos then take it off. It won't fit her next time you try it.

Appleblum · 01/10/2024 10:48

What's wrong with it? I think it looks very sweet!

Put her in it, take a few photos, then say she got some sick on it and change her out of it.

Edingril · 01/10/2024 10:48

Personally I think it's awful, but isn't that the point of grandparents? I'm joking

I would just move on, no don't see it anything to get upset about

WhereAreAllTheOddSocks · 01/10/2024 10:47

Over reaction.
It's 1 day. She'll never wear it again.
Your dd also won't give 2 shits or even remember wearing it either.

It’s cute for a few pictures but not really practical for a baby crawling around. The problem seems to be your Mum knows you won’t like it but thinks she has the right to override your wishes.

It's just clothes. Buying your granddaughter a dress you like that their parents don't is hardly a big deal. The child will probably wear thousands of clothes over the years that their parents don't like

I wouldn't really say a dress is overriding parents wishes. That's more a problem with actual parent decisions

Duckyfondant · 01/10/2024 10:47

Naah I'd completely ignore that outfit and put her in what we wanted. Weird that your mother knows you'll hate it but thinks you'll use your daughter as a clothes horse anyway

RaininSummer · 01/10/2024 10:46

It's horrible but dress her in it for a while. As soon as it's sticky or foody you can change her.

crumblingschools · 01/10/2024 10:46

Can’t imagine trying to change a nappy with all those layers on the skirt! Must win the vote for most impractical clothing for a baby.

CallMeMabel · 01/10/2024 10:45

I agree with pp, put it on her, couple of pictures and bin. I also think it's a sight, but it won't be the ugly thing she's given and it's not worth upsetting anyone over.

Needmorelego · 01/10/2024 10:45

Is the skirt bit separate?
Just dress her in the body suit part so she can crawl around.

sunsu · 01/10/2024 10:44

I wouldn’t put my child in that either but the issue isn’t the dress itself, it’s your mum deliberately buying something she knows you and your partner wouldn’t like. It’s disrespectful to you as a mother. I wouldn’t put my child in it and if questioned, simply say ‘you knew I wouldn’t like it and you were right so we picked something else for her’. No need to pacify someone that doesn’t respect you, regardless of who it is.

Needmorelego · 01/10/2024 10:43

She'll outgrow it in a couple of months. Dress her in it a couple of times. Put it in a memory box for her and she will decide if she wants to keep it when she's 18.
(By the way - your daughter will probably want no end of cheap princess dresses in the next few years....be prepared for lots of toddler fashion sense that isn't to your taste).

FiveTreeHill · 01/10/2024 10:43

Also presumably you can take off the skirt for when she's crawling around/playing after pictures?

Murpe · 01/10/2024 10:43

Is it your mother's intention that DD is to wear this all day on her birthday, for whatever way you're marking this?

Putting DD in it for a photo for your mum, not too much of an ask. If your mum is trying to get her to have it on for the duration of the day/party/whatever, that's a different matter. Because it's awful.

Gatekeeper · 01/10/2024 10:42

Yikes....it is fairly ghastly!

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/10/2024 10:42

It's cute. Put in dress

Take pic

Change unless seeing mum. Then a poo explosion

But whats wrong with the dress ?

FiveTreeHill · 01/10/2024 10:41

It's cute? Not maybe my taste but it's a pretty outfit for a first birthday

I'd just put her in it tbh. You don't have to love everything your daughter wears

TinselAngel · 01/10/2024 10:41

Although I'd probably lose the head band.

KeyWorker · 01/10/2024 10:41
