to not want to go on holiday with DH as he’s taking Pot Noodles?

Hear me out on this, we are off to Italy in a month, a lifelong dream of mine, I had visions of long leisurely lunches and dinners, great Italian food and wine aplenty.

Food on holiday has always been a contentious issue for DH, he believes eating out is a waste of money and would rather sit in the hotel room with a Pot Noodle (seriously). On one holiday he actually went to a supermarket and bought all these pound noodles to try. Now I’m not for blowing money on fancy gourmet dinners but I like to eat nice, good healthy food. We’ve gone all inclusive and that’s usually a great compromise.

So this time I was informing him of the Italian tradition of eating late and it being an event, courses taking a while etc etc and he’s been so annoying about it saying he wants to go to McDonalds or he’ll just have Pot Noodles. He like to eat at 12 noon for lunch and 5pm for dinner on the dot, he eats very fast too. He says he’s going for the sights not for the food.

So I’m contemplating leaving him with his sad Pot Noodle and just taking the DC put for a nice meal on my own. It’s the way he keeps going on about it to get a rise out of me.

Go out and eat!

I do not know how you got past dating though.

MichaelAndEagle · 30/09/2024 22:14

I am with you on the food and him being an arse but I have to ask why you are surprised that he squashed your vision so completely? You know what he is like, you know that he eats at 12 and 5 on the dot and doesnt do "forrin muck", so I dont understand why you expected him to be on board with late lunches, late leisurely dinners and anything that doesnt come with chips.

Yes me too. Why did you expect a different response? Surely you knew it wouldn't be up his street at all?

Anyway I think just let him have his pot noodles at 5, and he can either come with you all later on anyway, or not. But don't let it stop you enjoying yourself.

bringslight · 30/09/2024 22:13

LOL, this reminds me of one Chinese lady whom I met on a solo trip to the Isle of Wight. She used to go on holidays and eat pot noodles and saved so much

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/09/2024 22:13

Oh my god he sounds like my exh!

When I go on holiday, I like to taste the country (so to speak) as much as see it. Why is the sense of sight so much superior to and more important than that of taste - or any other sense?

My ex basically thought food in general was as a waste of money.

I can tell you such stories of being in France, Portugal and other wonderful countries for food and not being allowed to eat any of it! (I was young at the time - but I did insist on going out to eat at least some of the time)

Just stick with main dishes then? Pasta is a starter, and there's plenty if alternative starters.

Providing it’s not got herbs or a sauce on it or anything related to cheese 🤣🤣😊

Ginmonkeyagain · 30/09/2024 22:12

He eats dinner at 5pm? Is he a child? How is he even home from work in time to eat dinner at 5pm.

I hear you OP, I couldn't even contemplate going to Italy with someone who would take Pot Noodles with them.

PyongyangKipperbang · 30/09/2024 22:11

My parents went to Italy with some friends of theirs. Well you would have thought that the husband was being expected to eat a plate of dog shit covered in arsenic. Imagine their (well his, but his wife never said no to him) delight on discovering a "pub" that sold all English food, full breakfast and a roast on Sundays. They never ate out again with my parents and my parents gave them a hard NO when they asked to go on holiday with them again.

I am with you on the food and him being an arse but I have to ask why you are surprised that he squashed your vision so completely? LostTheMarble · 30/09/2024 22:08

I’m not going to say your husband is ND op. But he reads exactly like my ex, who wouldn’t eat most of the things you listed either. But he is autistic so 🤷‍♀️. Some people are just all about the beige life, not for me personally. Much like going on holiday with someone who’d only eat pot noodles but I guess that’s why I never had a holiday with the ex (though his hyperfixation of frozen cardboard pizza probably would have had us kicked out of Italy…).

mitogoshigg · 30/09/2024 22:07

There's a compromise, Italian restaurants aren't late like Spain, we could be seated around 7pm without issue and you can order as many courses or as few as you want

arethereanyleftatall · 30/09/2024 22:06

It is absolutely insane to me that you would firstly get married to someone so fundamentally incompatible, and secondly book a holiday WITH THEM to go somewhere where you want to enjoy the food!!! Literally batshit! Go with people who enjoy what you enjoy.

Mebebecat · 30/09/2024 22:06

Hahaha, DH would do this and he's Italian!! Seriously. It would piss him off so much to pay tourists restaurant (or indeed any restaurant) prices for something he could make better and cheaper at home.
It's not about being English, it's about being a tight arse!

Silvers11 · 30/09/2024 22:04

@Astridastro You said you have gone All inclusive? But you've also said that you have been making a list of places you want to eat? Isn't that a terrible waste of money?

NewFriendlyLadybird · 30/09/2024 22:03

His loss. Doesn’t stop you going out and enjoying Italian dinners.

Pollydollydoodle · 30/09/2024 22:03

OverthinkingOlive · 30/09/2024 21:32

I couldn't stand this. It's not called being English it's called being a stingy, boring bastard. I'd never shag him again.

This made me laugh!!

snowlady4 · 30/09/2024 22:01

Are you all inclusive on this holiday? Or did you just mean you go ai generally?

snowlady4 · 30/09/2024 22:00

Can he not do both? Eat his pot noodle at 5pm and still come for dinner? Surely he can manage a glass of wine and slice of pizza or something?
And yes, this would annoy me massively, but it's the way he is, pick your battles.

Phase2 · 30/09/2024 21:59

Unfamiliar food? It's Italy! Home of the world's most popular international cuisine!

Yes but not to the ops dh.

Mercedes45 · 30/09/2024 21:59

Astridastro · 30/09/2024 21:27

Ps he is not English can’t even blame that 😀

chicken and mushroom of course nothing too exotic like curry or a Bombay bad boy

I do actually think part of it stems from his upbringing his Mother didn’t cook any “foreign muck” and she had 6 dinners she cooked every week, fish and chips on a Friday of course. He didn’t even have gravy on his Sunday roast until he met me, or cheese, curry, pasta.

We have proper family meals and I’m quite an adventurous cook but he’s still quite plain. I said get chicken, oh it’ll have some weird Italian sauce on it I don’t like (how do you know unless you try it?)

Is he Irish?

GrumpyPanda · 30/09/2024 21:58

Astridastro · 30/09/2024 21:51

I’ve been scouring TikTok and already have a list of places I want to eat. After a day sightseeing a lovely long sight down and a glass of wine will be lovely! There’s a wealth of gorgeous food not just pizza and pasta and the street food! Cannot wait, I don’t understand him Pot Noodles when you are in the greatest country for food in the world.

If you want really good AND affordable places then for both Italy and France I'd check the affordable eats (Bible gourmand) category at viamichelin.com. Think you can check a box so it only shows you places without a star. Never had a bad pick and they've all been on the cheap side, too.

BettyBardMacDonald · 30/09/2024 21:55

I am a picky eater but have never stopped SOs or travel companions from having what they want. It's easy enough to have wine, bread and salad most places, or ask for plain grilled chicken.

I will admit there have been times when I have nipped into a McDonald's en route back to the hotel, but never at the expense of sitting and keeping the other(s) company while they enjoy higher cuisine.

He sounds rude.

merrymelodies · 30/09/2024 21:55

What a peasant. No, hold on, peasants appreciate the fruits of their labour! To say nothing of his sodium intake, your DH is on a fast-track to severe health issues. LTB.

Yes, apologies. I meant the OP's husband.

I believe the noodle predates the Pot Noodle by some time so, no, noodles aren't Welsh.

OMG, he sounds like the man who sat in our plane aisle going to Greece one year. Id never been and he had said he had gone twice a year for many years so I asked him about the food. He didnt have a clue, he had a suitcase of "English Food" with him .......

My DH was never adventurous with food when we met, like yours in a way. We tend to do B+B or self catering now and do brekkie and lunch at the apartment/hotel and eat out in the evening- be dammed if Im cooking and eating out is part of the holiday experience. But being self catering, theres always food DH can eat if the meal out didnt float his boat.

Imagine what to use your luggage allowance for! My dad, bless him, was the opposite. Still remember when he returned from a conference in Paris with a carry-on full of delicate French "LA Ratte" potatoes..

If you are doing AI then your food is already paid for so surely he is wasting money buying pot noodles over and above this?

This. Seems to me like the AI will end up pleasing no one, because the OP won't get to go out and explore local restaurants and her sad sack of a husband will stay in the hotel room eating his fucking pot noodles anyway.
