to not want to go on holiday with DH as he’s taking Pot Noodles?

Hear me out on this, we are off to Italy in a month, a lifelong dream of mine, I had visions of long leisurely lunches and dinners, great Italian food and wine aplenty.

Food on holiday has always been a contentious issue for DH, he believes eating out is a waste of money and would rather sit in the hotel room with a Pot Noodle (seriously). On one holiday he actually went to a supermarket and bought all these pound noodles to try. Now I’m not for blowing money on fancy gourmet dinners but I like to eat nice, good healthy food. We’ve gone all inclusive and that’s usually a great compromise.

So this time I was informing him of the Italian tradition of eating late and it being an event, courses taking a while etc etc and he’s been so annoying about it saying he wants to go to McDonalds or he’ll just have Pot Noodles. He like to eat at 12 noon for lunch and 5pm for dinner on the dot, he eats very fast too. He says he’s going for the sights not for the food.

So I’m contemplating leaving him with his sad Pot Noodle and just taking the DC put for a nice meal on my own. It’s the way he keeps going on about it to get a rise out of me.

With lovely Italian grub 😱 I can't understand why you would.

Crikeyalmighty · 30/09/2024 22:41

Blimey I would struggle with this as picking where to eat is part of my holiday- husband has a friend like this though- once said to me that he's not bothered about nice meals out as food really is just fuel - whereas I'm not interested in things like old churches etc - guess we are all different- just leave him OP to his pot noodle and go out with the kids

Seas164 · 30/09/2024 22:39

He sees food as fuel not pleasure? A Pot Noodle is surely the worst of both worlds.

Astridastro · 30/09/2024 22:38

I agree with @Josette77 no one goes to the US for their food, it’s worse than ours 😀 I do love a mooch around Walmart though the cereal aisles are something else, sacks of brightly coloured cereal and the crisp flavours. I love supermarkets abroad 😀

bout ONLY compromise is-one of his sightseeing-is you eting proper food. you tolerting his mnky preferences(which fortuntely arent time consuming)he goes with you, taste /order food is optional(for him)
Believe me, I sent my 15 yo ds1 to his dds to sty(overnight)when he mde pot noodle one time//never have i ever.
IF he is so self restrictive with food youze needy gree on compromise tht mens both eat

@Ginmonkeyagain thats a very narrow view of you think everyone who works has a 9-5 job and a commute? Nowadays there is a thing called working from home and flexible working! DH is usually at his desk (in his home office) by 7am (he works with people in different time zones) so he is usually finished by 4-4.30 at the latest. I am usually also finished work around 4. Some other people do shift work and different patterns of working away from the usual 9-5. DH probably needs his evening meal at 5pm as he’s been up since 6am at the gym/run and been working since 7am.

I just don’t think he’s very good orientated, he sees it as fuel not as a pleasure, to him it’s a waste of money and time. I’m the opposite sadly. The Pot Noodles are a contingency really if he doesn’t like the local food. We always take a travel kettle everywhere as I never compromise on my morning and night cuppa and I hate coffee so the cappuccinos won’t be for me.

The concept of noodles was Chinese and then stolen by the Italians.

Traditional English food was pottage ( root veg eg turnips, swedes and carrots, peas) The wealthy are meats with no veg.

Potatoes were taken from Americas.

Pasta became popular in the 1980s as did curry.

The idea that Italian food is just pasta and pizza is ridiculous. That’s the equivalent of Italian fish and chips. There are so many different dishes but you have to go to more expensive restaurants.

Obviously a pizza is not decent unless cooked on a wood burning oven and a decent pizza chef has learnt their trade for some time.

My son is ASD and hated to go out at night so we brought back cheeses, fruits and bread , salad mozzarella etc. Going to the market was a lovely treat and we also bought a bottle of wine.
Slightly better than Pot Noodle ( full of chemicals).

You could agree to alternative - evening in and evening out.

At last, an intelligent comment! We used to do road trips in the US, 4/5 weeks, and the most liberating thing was deciding that we didn't have to always eat out every evening, especially after a long day driving and site seeing.

Not the same at all.

I live in Canada and our food in North America is not comparable.

That said depending on where you are you'd miss out if you were in New Orleans. New York also has incredible food. California has gorgeous healthy restaurants as does Portland.

No one goes to the states though for the food. Italy is known for theirs.

Utterly different scenario. Hardly in Italy on holiday or road trip for 4/5 weeks, then you'd get an apartment with a kitchen, duh.

Blueuggboots · 30/09/2024 22:25

Honestly?? I wouldn't go with him. I couldn't be married to someone who didn't enjoy their food. This sounds like my idea of hell!!

GoldenLegend · 30/09/2024 22:25

Where are you going to be, approx, OP? I love Italy and Italian food. Make sure you try fritto misto (deep fried shellfish with occasionally bits of veg) it's utterly divine.

liquidsquidli · 30/09/2024 22:23

We had a gorgeous holiday starting with 2 days in Barcelona.

The first thing DH wanted to do was go to McDonald's to get a McRib.

I feel your pain

He did make up for it though as we went to Cecconi's both night (thanks Amex)

IfOnlyTheyWent · 30/09/2024 22:23

A few posts in and it's "is he neuro diverse", and a poster saying it's "abhorrent" not to eat all types of food.Confused Op, you'll be lucky on this thread if you aren't being advised to go to couples therapy.

Imagine what to use your luggage allowance for! My dad, bless him, was the opposite. Still remember when he returned from a conference in Paris with a carry-on full of delicate French "LA Ratte" potatoes..

I know I was like "WTF?"

For me a holiday is so much about the food, from getting up early and taking a walk down the village/town, picking up fresh bread and eggs, and evening trips down and having tapas ( bar snacks ) here, main course there, dessert elsewhere...

Im happy with picky food, a bit here and a bit there, DH is a meat and veg man ( he hated Greek food on the Island we were on ) so we compromise . I refuse to cook but will throw a salad together, stick a pizza on ( thats not cooking in my eyes) so he will still come and eat out and enjoy the evening, knowing if theres nothing he likes , he will get fed :)

He loved the food in Italy though and would go back in a heartbeat. Theres always something that the most pickiest of eater can find to eat in Italy, food is lovely

Italy isn’t for me

That’s a very narrow view of Italian food…

suburberphobe · 30/09/2024 22:20

Ah, just leave him alone with his pot noodles while you show your child what amazing food is. In Italy. You, my dear, deserve it too.

Anyway, I'd leave a man who couldn't feed himself or me or DC with nutritious fabulous food. It's the basis of life. And one of its pleasures.

If he lives on crap food like that, he has a problem....

ISpyNoPlumPie · 30/09/2024 22:20

Well. I’m glad YOU are married to him. What an act of sacrifice for womankind. I don’t mean that…but FUCK ME that’s one way to suck all the joy out of life.

I'm team DH (minus the pot noodles) as I'd hate to have to waste precious site/sight (?) seeing time eating. Nice meals out are for when there's nothing better to do. But away in another country with thousand things to experience I'd be deeply frustrated by hours in a resturant. Pot noodles are horrible and unhealthy though. But a sandwich and fruit from the supermarket and I'd be all for that.

It does comprise a massive part of it, to be fair!

It really doesn’t. And, honestly, even the umbrella of ‘Italian food’ is pretty misleading, as it varies so massively (and deliciously) from region to region. I could travel across Italy for a month and eat a different dish for each meal, every single day, with neither pasta nor pizza touching my lips.

LucyLocketLovesPollyPocket · 30/09/2024 22:17

Some people like what they like. Will he sit at a family meal and have drink to be apart of the table? Some people just can't eat outside their comfort zones.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 30/09/2024 22:17

Why can't he have his pot noodle at 5pm and then come out to the evening meal? A tiny pot noodle isn't going to fill up a fully grown man! Or is it simply he's just being too tight to pay for one evening meal?

Sweetsweettoot · 30/09/2024 22:16

How utterly depressing.

Go out and eat!

I do not know how you got past dating though.

Sometimes the wait for a man has been long and any man without big problems will do. This one is a small problem

Good job pizza and pasta are just a tiny fraction of Italian food then! It’s just the stuff that’s caught on abroad.
