Would you be offended if someone asked you whether you were over 60’s?

I’d really love to hear people’s opinions on this!

If you went to the cinema to purchase a ticket to watch a film and the sales assistant said, ‘Is that 1 Adult ticket or 1 Over 60’s ticket?’ would you be offended by that? Bearing in mind you’re not actually over 60’s but 53.

For context, an Adult ticket costs £13.70 and an Over 60’s ticket costs £10.70. How would you feel about that line of questioning?

YABU - that’s a really offensive question and shouldn’t be asked.

YANBU - there’s nothing wrong with the question as the staff member needs to charge the correct price

I'd be gutted to be asked that at age 50. If I was say 68 I'd be pleased that they thought I might be younger.

DelphiniumBlue · 30/09/2024 14:17

It's really hard to guess someone's age - I'm in my 60s and often find I'm wrong to a good 10 years each way. Don't take offence OP, maybe she was just being nice re a potential discount - better to offer it than not.

SauviGone · 30/09/2024 14:16

I’d be a bit bemused, but I’m 10 years younger than you. Grin

Was it a young person serving you? I remember being 18 and thinking that anyone over 40 seemed 60+.

hildabaker · 30/09/2024 14:15

No I wouldn't be offended. I have always thought it bit daft to place your self esteem on what age you are/look.

loropianalover · 30/09/2024 14:13

I’m in my 20s and honestly someone could be 45 or 65 and I wouldn’t know. Maybe the ticket seller had just been given out to by a 60+ because they charged them as an adult.

Maybe easy for me to say but I don’t think there’s anything offensive about being 60 vs 53. People would probably guess I’m anywhere been 27-33.

DannSindWirHelden · 30/09/2024 14:12

If I had grey hair I'd shrug and probably lie for the discount. If I didn't I'd be a bit miffed, but certainly not offended. I'm a similar age and it hasn't happened to me .....yet.

We went to a Classic Car show with our neice a few weeks ago. Ticket seller took our money, peered into back of car, and decided our neice was under 14

She’s 49🤣

SockQueen · 30/09/2024 14:11

They're trying to give you a discount!

Judging ages is hard, especially for young people who may have a limited reference range. They're probably trying to be helpful rather than judgemental.

Sunflowersanddaffodils · 30/09/2024 14:10

Well I get she's trying to save you £3 but that's a bit tactless. I actually am 60 but like to think I look a few years younger (may be delusional of course!!) and even I'd be a bit miffed at the question.

VesperLind · 30/09/2024 14:10

Anyone over the age of 40 could appear to be 60 to a person in their teens or 20s Grin. It’s not offensive, they are doing their job and potentially trying to save you money.

Getitwright · 30/09/2024 14:09

It’s just a standard question, ticket sellers possibly not paying that much attention to you, nothing to get uptight about. So no, I wouldn’t get upset, they are just doing their rather boring job. I certainly wouldn’t have me peering in a mirror and desperate to get Botox.

iwonderifyouknow · 30/09/2024 14:09

I'd think it was stupid of the person to ask. Leave it to the customer. Or be more tactful. Say we have concessions for X Y and Z.

But, if it were asked if me and I wasn't over 60, I'd chalk it up to so many over 60s looking so young these days. Then I'd probably fib for the discount. Win win. I'm not 60, but I got a discount anyway. Whatever.

Gorgonemilezola · 30/09/2024 14:07

It's not offensive.
