I’d really love to hear people’s opinions on this!

If you went to the cinema to purchase a ticket to watch a film and the sales assistant said, ‘Is that 1 Adult ticket or 1 Over 60’s ticket?’ would you be offended by that? Bearing in mind you’re not actually over 60’s but 53.

For context, an Adult ticket costs £13.70 and an Over 60’s ticket costs £10.70. How would you feel about that line of questioning?

YABU - that’s a really offensive question and shouldn’t be asked.

YANBU - there’s nothing wrong with the question as the staff member needs to charge the correct price

Meh, I can remember when I was a teen and in my twenties, I thought anyone 40 and over was ancient. Now the reverse is true and I think most of the young people I see should still be in school!

On recent visit to a very overcrowded A&E a doctor was attending a patient mere inches away and my elderly (deaf) mum asked “is he really a doctor?” When I nodded in the affirmative (inwardly cringing, because I knew what was coming) she announced to all assembled “BUT HE’S SO YOUNG!” 🤦‍♀️

Joystir59 · 30/09/2024 19:57

What's wrong with being over 60? I am 66. Love any and all age-related concessions I can get. Who wouldn't?

BinkyBeaufort · 30/09/2024 19:52

I'd be dead chuffed, but then I hit 60 over a decade ago.

South London. As I said, a lot of the customers aren’t regulars so don’t actually realise they can get a cheaper ticket.

No clue how people all of a sudden find out that they could have got a cheaper ticket but they do! They either mention it on their next visit or again, send an email to the customer service team.

Anywho, I’m not losing sleep over it! Just interested in what others thought

That's so weird - I'm just southwest of London and never got told off by a customer for not suggesting they get a reduced ticket on the off chance they're eligible. You'd have to do it to everyone in that case as you can be a student at any age for example

They aren't being ripped off at all. Where on earth do you live? Beginning to think this is a regional thing. I worked in hospitality for bloody ages and never thought it was on me to tell people about advertised discounts. They have to find them and then tell you about them where I live (near london). If they get pissy, that's entirely ridiculous. If they thought they were entitled to a reduced ticket in the first place they have to say so. How are they even finding out only AFTER they've paid and then watched the movie and then decided they've been ripped off? Nuts

As I said upthread, many people don’t know about the cheaper tickets. You charge them the price of a standard ticket and they’ll come back pissy that you didn’t mention the discounted ticket.

And can’t you just say the prices are stated on this big sign here? Sorry you missed it because you’re ancient and your eyesight is so shit.Grin

In all truthfulness, it’s one of those cinemas where the prices are written in chalk, on a board, that’s full of other shite and announcements. It’s actually not clear to see the price for the specific day and time (and age group) unless you look online! A bit rubbish really

Well, I wouldn't be offended - I'd be flattered as I'm over 60!

I’m hopeless at guessing ages and will simply not do it! I saw a ‘boy’ getting on the bus today in full school uniform and I would have put him at 25. He did have a very fine moustache though.

🤣

There are various different tickets at different prices. So it doesn’t make sense to say ‘two adult’ tickets when that adult can get a cheaper ticket whether they’re a student or over the age of 60. Unless people don’t mind being ripped off a few quid then it’s no problem at all really

I went swimming with my pensioner dad last week. They charged me child entrance. I’m 43

But technically they were right - he was with his child.

Are you the customer that complained? You have a right bee in your bonnet😂

But why guess at all? Just say "two adults for James Bond?" or whatever. No analysis needed here.

I wouldn’t have been delighted ten years ago, no.

And we say the younger generation are too easily offended!

The problem with asking 'any concessions?' It could be taken as insenuating they are old/too young/look poor on low income/seem disabled. It might also open up a whole new conversation delaying customers waiting. I think having the prices very clear, ie not far away on a board in frilly fancy font or chalk handwritting is the best way. Those interested in discount will look for it and ask. Maybe a poster with "reduced prices for x y and z please mention when booking"

Yes this is so true! All of the prices in our cinema’s aren’t exactly clear, as there’s different prices for different people and depending on what day/time it is, those prices vary. Clear pricing is important but hey, I don’t get to make the big decisions all around the UK😆

We can definitely consider it in our location though so thanks for the idea of the poster!

I agree about darkness, in our Vue I wouldn’t recognize my own husband if he would be buying a ticket - bloke in jeans and navy jacket with greyish hair could be anything between 30 - 70.

I would be distraught if asked but then would pull myself together ask for an adult and go in. I wouldn’t complain. What about? I know I’m not young any more.

Honestly!😅

I’m late sixties and useless at guessing ages. Work was a nightmare - doing home visits and sometimes not knowing if the people in the house were husband and wife / mother and son/ father and daughter/ any other combination ……….and then trying to work it out without offending anyone!

Same tbh😂

I’m surprised at those saying, ‘you must be young if you don’t know the difference between 53 and 60.’

Picture this. You’re a staff member in the box office of a cinema where it’s naturally dark and has low lighting. When someone comes in and approaches the tills, you have about 5 seconds to analyse them before they say what film they’d like to see. Once they’ve done that, you’re looking at your till straight away and asking what ticket they want to purchase.

It’s not as if the sales assistant had anytime prior to really look at this customer and guess their specific age. Even if it was me, I’d probably guess what age group they could be instead of trying to guess their specific age. How the hell would I do that?!

But why guess at all? Just say "two adults for James Bond?" or whatever. No analysis needed here.
