Would you be offended if someone asked you whether you were over 60’s?

I’d really love to hear people’s opinions on this!

If you went to the cinema to purchase a ticket to watch a film and the sales assistant said, ‘Is that 1 Adult ticket or 1 Over 60’s ticket?’ would you be offended by that? Bearing in mind you’re not actually over 60’s but 53.

For context, an Adult ticket costs £13.70 and an Over 60’s ticket costs £10.70. How would you feel about that line of questioning?

YABU - that’s a really offensive question and shouldn’t be asked.

YANBU - there’s nothing wrong with the question as the staff member needs to charge the correct price

I’d be offended but then I am 23.

Right. I'm sure you just adore it when people think you're in your seventies.

Thats not what I said. I said it wasn’t personal, that it didn’t mean you looked it. It’s not somebody saying you look like an age, just that you are within the range where it’s hard to be sure. Age, and other people’s perception of it, isn’t really that big a deal to me though.

It’s just the revers of ‘Challenge 25’. We have that because it’s so hard to judge age accurately. Someone thinking it’s not impossible you are over 60 is not the same as saying you look years older than you are.

I'm curious. If there is supposedly nothing offensive about someone inferring you are 7-plus years older than you are, in another age bracket, and - being over 60 - an actual Boomer - then why is almost every S&B thread on "ageing" full of women in their 40s looking for that holy grail product that will make them look younger? Nobody wants to be told they look older than they are.

DH and I are now 60 (me for a month) and DH is 62. We've taken great 'joy' in getting a 'senior discount' for a few years now. We have sort of turned it in to a bit of a challenge. It has saved us a pretty penny. My earliest 'win' was a chap at a steam train who asked us 'is that two seniors?' over 10 years ago - I was 49 then.

LynetteScavo · 02/10/2024 06:36

I was slightly offended when a HCP asked if I was pregnant and then giggled and said "Obviously not". Physically it was possible thank you.

I think if you're about 50 you don't want to be asked if you're 60. But if you're 70 you'd be flattered. MIL would have been delighted, but she's mid 70s. At 40 it would just be an odd question.

Tel12 · 02/10/2024 05:56

They asked the question. You're not 21 so hardly anything to be offended about. Oh to see ourselves as others see us!

Mummadeze · 02/10/2024 05:51

I am 50 and have to admit I would be gutted if I was asked this. I feel no way near 60 yet.

HomeTheatreSystem · 02/10/2024 05:42

Wouldn't bother me at all as many people are actually very bad at judging age with any degree of accuracy.

I couldn’t get too upset about it tbh, a lot of people struggle to tell what age others are although I can understand you are a bit miffed. Where I live in Australia over 60s working less than 20 hours a week are entitled to a Seniors Card which gives big discounts, including all day travel in a huge area for $2.50 and cheap tickets to movies/theatre/exhibitions so it would be unusual for a customer not to ask for a cheap ticket if they are entitled to it.

OnGoldenPond · 02/10/2024 01:32

I'm pretty miffed that I've never in my life been asked for ID when buying booze - being asked if I wanted a seniors discount would just about finish off my poor fragile ego! Grin

GladiatoooorsReadyyyy · 01/10/2024 16:16

Nope, it 100% happened! It definitely wasn’t because I look like a child, I can assure you of that 😂

Carer’s price? Not suggesting your dad needs one, just that they might have assumed.

I went swimming with my pensioner dad last week. They charged me child entrance. I’m 43

PMSL! 😂 Clearly you're joking. No-one of 43 looks like a child FFS! Not in ANY kind of 'lighting.'

Chocolatebuttonsandprosseco · 01/10/2024 15:00

I’d be offended as I’m a decade off it, but I’ve a male friend who always tells folks he’s over 60 and takes the discount. He isn’t. He’s your age. He finds it amusing.

I think people generally don’t know how old people are judging by looks. I got IDd when I was in my early 40s, there was no way in a million years I looked under 25!

Did anyone think you were 60 when you were in your early 40s though?

cardibach · 01/10/2024 13:15

Beucauseoftheslip · 01/10/2024 13:06

I know it's better than the alternative blah blah but no, sorry I'd prefer to be 40 than 60 tbh . Not because it's 'embarrassing' but it feels like yesterday that I was 40 and suddenly I'm a year off being 60 and it's gone in the blink of an eye. It's scary and depressing.

Oh, I’m with you in time going fast and it being a bit scary! Still wouldn’t be upset or embarrassed because someone who didn’t know me got my age wrong by a few years. ( I’m 60 this month).

Maddy70 · 01/10/2024 13:07

Id have jumped at the cheaper ticket (54 here)

Beucauseoftheslip · 01/10/2024 13:06

cardibach · 01/10/2024 12:49

Seems an over reaction. Given that it’s really hard to date anyone with accuracy, especially so the further from your age they are, I don’t think I’d be embarrassed or ashamed about it. And cheap tickets are a win. I’m 60 later this month and can’t wait for my bus pass (in Wales, so still get it at 60)

Frowningprovidence · 01/10/2024 12:55

It would depend on the age of the server. I think id initially be a bit disappointed to look older than I was because that's just how society is, but then I remember being in my 20s and not really being able to work out anyone's age over about 40. I could spot people in theirs 20s like me, a good stab at 30s but somewhere in the 40s they were all just middle aged.

cardibach · 01/10/2024 12:49

Beucauseoftheslip · 01/10/2024 09:51

Nothing but I'd be mortified if someone thought I looked older than I am tbh

What's wrong with being over 60? I am 66. Love any and all age-related concessions I can get. Who wouldn't?

What's offensive about being over 60?

Utterly ludicrous thing to ask! Didn't take long did it? 🙄 There is NOTHING WRONG with being over 60 FFS! But no-one wants someone to think they look over 60 when they're a decade or more younger! And certainly not if they're 3 years out of their 40s FFS!

But you know that of course. Pedants Corner is that way >>>>>>>>

!

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 30/09/2024 20:31

I knew the results would be that most posters think it's not unreasonable to be asked that. 🙄 In real life, EVERYone would be offended by this. There would just be different levels of how offended they'd be...

It's happened to me a few times, and frankly it has really pissed me off and offended me. You are right @WhatDoYouThink789 do NOT offer an over 60s - or pensioner discount to anyone! Put a sign up saying you offer them, and the onus can then be on people to ask for it.

I was offered a 'Silver Saver card' in a store this one time - (for over 60s,) and I was 46! Forty fucking six! I was like Hmm What? I said 'why would I want an over 60s card? I'm in my mid 40s.' And I was like Hmm

The (middle aged) woman serving said 'oops. I am not very good at telling peoples ages.' Just like this woman in the pharmacy who offered me a 'pensioners discount' when I was fucking 48! Again a middle aged woman. She said she is not very good at telling ages either.. If that's the case, why didn't these women think I was 35?!

I don't claim to be a babyface, but no fucking WAY did I look like I was in my 60s at 46-48 FFS!

I also had a woman - again middle aged! - offering me an over 65s discount several years ago when we went to a local visitor attraction. I was 55! I said 'umm, no thanks - I'm not over 65!' She just said 'I have to ask.' WHY? Why does she 'have to ask?' And does she 'ask' people who are 33?

Upshot is, don't assume people are pensioners or over 60. It's rude. And as I said, it's always been middle aged women with me. (early/mid 40s to around 60.) Men never do it to me. I have NEVER had a man ask if I want a pensioner discount! And no-one in their 30s or younger has asked either. Funny that!

Also, a few years ago (when I was early to mid 50s,) I met a woman who was walking her dog (when I was on a walk in the woods.) She told me she had just come off a cruise with her sister to celebrate her 60th and her sister's 65th birthdays. She asked me 'are you retired?' I was 54. 🙄I said 'yes I retired last year when I was 70.' She was like >>> 😕

I thought I would just go with the flow, and if these women make out they think I'm a pensioner/retired (when I'm in my late 50s,) I will humour them and say I'm in my 70s! I'm no longer going to let them see it's annoyed me. Again though, it was a woman between early/mid 40s and around 60.

(By the way, I have been mistaken for 5-8 years younger quite a few times, so I am pretty sure that I just pretty much look my age!)
