Manners - do you do any/all of these things?

Is it bad manners to not do any of these things?

Tucking your chair in when you've left a table

Putting your basket back after using the self checkout in the supermarket

Closing doors and drawers after opening them

Stacking plates/bowls and rubbish in a restaurant after a meal to make it easier for the server to collect/clear up

I do all but the last one. Servers often want to clear the plates in their own way so they can balance the plates on their arm. They wouldn't always welcome the customer stacking dishes for them.

orangesandlemonssaythebellsofstclements · 30/09/2024 17:00

I do them all, including stacking plates which until this thread I thought was a nice helpful thing to do.

Are there really people that don't tuck in chairs or close draws?? How strange. Don't these things get in their way?

I know people don't put back baskets and trolleys but I do.

Edit: actually come to think of it I don't ever use the baskets.

I do every single one of these. I used to work as a waitress in a hotel restaurant and the amount of people who cant be arsed stacking their plates or tidying up after themselves is beyond me

Gelasring · 30/09/2024 16:59

I return trolleys, I don't return baskets because I'd have to leave the store and go back in which seems a bit excessive. If there's an obvious place by the till to stack them I will though.

Lolatusernamesuggestions · 30/09/2024 16:57

I try to do these but I can be a bit oblivious about spacial awareness and have been roasted a few times in shopping malls for being too close to people when it's heaving. To be honest they end up being ruder than my original error by shouting and getting angry. I always happily point this out in a polite way of course.
As for cupboard doors in our house, kitchen regularly looks like we have a poltergeist. I need to train them all better.

zingally · 30/09/2024 16:51

I do everything apart from the last one.

But don't get me started on returning trolleys.

I read somewhere that returning trolleys (or not) is a good indication on whether a person is, on the whole, a "good" member of society. There is no reward for doing so, but neither is there a penalty/punishment for not returning it.
It's whether they have an internal motivation/desire to "do the right thing", follow the rules, make things easier for the workers etc.

I have been known from time to time to tell people "that's not where the trolley goes you know." It doesn't go down well, but if they're a bit embarrassed, then good.

I do all except the bottom one.

I read somewhere that to stack plates is ‘uncouth’ and decent servers would rather you left them tidily in front of you so they can collect in the order they wish.

Yep. Same with me.
I also think leaving shoes tidily together when you take them off instead of in a heap is good manners, DH.

unmemorableusername · 30/09/2024 16:41

Tucking your chair in when you've left a table
No because it can be difficult to push/pull chairs but it depends on where and how much space there is

Putting your basket back after using the self checkout in the supermarket
Back where?
Closing doors and drawers after opening them
Drawers, yes always
Doors- depends on the circumstances

Stacking plates/bowls and rubbish in a restaurant after a meal to make it easier for the server to collect/clear up
As an ex waitress I hate this.
Leave the staff to sort the plates themselves.

HansHolbein · 30/09/2024 16:39

I do them all apart from the last one. My children do the same.

Newdaylucky · 30/09/2024 16:30

Stacking plates makes the back of the plates dirty - gross

dermalermalurd · 30/09/2024 16:10

All but the last which depends where I am; in a cafe - yes, in a restaurant - no.

I actually think manners are difficult to define - I think people with truly good manners can put others at their ease, and enable social situations to run more easily. So, it's less a formula of Do X, don't do Y, and more a way of being.

That's very true.

Lovelylilylane · 29/09/2024 18:52

I’ve never heard of plate stacking (sounds rather lowbrow) but I do the rest of course.

Peak MN 😄

Brobdingnagian · 29/09/2024 18:15

@WandaFishy99 I thought you were supposed to take the tray over to those wheeled racks and slide the tray full of stuff into it yourself? I’ve never been in one that doesn’t have that that and where customers don’t clear their own tables.

I do if there is one of those, like in Ikea, but my local M&S and Costa are the only ones I go to regularly and neither has one, the staff collect the dirty crockery on trays.
There is actually a cafe in my town with a sign asking customers to please leave their dirty crockery on their table.

LangYang · 29/09/2024 19:34

definitely do first three, definitely don’t do the last - have always been told it’s bad manners to stack plates in a restaurant and I cringe if I’m out with someone who does. Of course I would try and be helpful and pass things along a large table etc

unsync · 29/09/2024 19:31

All except the last, that is just odd. It is the waiting staff's job to do that and stacking would be indicative of impatience and could therefore potentially cause offence. I do however pass them my plate etc if it is awkward for them to get to it (weird table placement, banquette seating etc).

Crumpleton · 29/09/2024 19:06

I do all of these things, although I don't leave things between dishes as mentioned, but wouldn't class any of them as manners just normal things really.

I never leave a serviette behind that I've used, to me that would be showing myself to have bad manners, purely because I'd not want to touch something that someone had wiped their mouth/hands or even blown their nose, I don't do that one though, on so I'd not expect anyone to do so.

IAmASpoon · 29/09/2024 19:02

I do all of them. The plate stacking is a bit dependent on which restaurant, but I'll always gather cutlery, serviettes, dropped food etc onto plates before they take them.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 29/09/2024 18:59

All of them, except the last.

LilianaVikavanovich · 29/09/2024 18:58

I do all , except stacking plates in a restaurant
I used to work in hospitality, believe me , it doesn’t help

5128gap · 29/09/2024 18:57

1 to 4, but not 5. I'm never sure if stacking is helpful to waiting staff. Some say it isn't. I try to be courteous to them by tidying any excess mess and giving a decent tip.

HappyDane · 29/09/2024 18:56

Yes, I hand my plate over if it's clear it'll make it easier, when in a big party for example. But stacking everything is not expected in a restaurant and is not good manners.

MissPeachyKeen · 29/09/2024 18:56

MissPeachyKeen · 29/09/2024 18:49

Definitely not to stacking plates - used to drive me nuts when I waitressed as a student. Apart from the obvious point that it made much harder to pick them up, it was also messy / disgusting as it frequently made it impossible to collect plates without getting food or sauce on one's hands.

And yes, it looks terrible: the table should as though you've enjoyed a good meal, not as if it's a dumping ground for tableware next to the washing machine. If you work hard to ensure the restaurant looks smart, you certainly don't want your efforts undermined in this way. It looks really common.

The only time it's appropriate is when a server is actively collecting your plates and you pass the hard-to-reach ones over.

Also, when I visit restaurant it's not my job - it's theirs.
