I remember winning wine at school fetes on them and excitedly running over to my mum to get her to collect the bottle of wine I’d won (as obviously they wouldn’t give it to me without an adult). It was still exciting

@Twototwo15 because there are actually very strict rules overseen by the council / LA on how to run raffles and tombolas as it is a form of gambling. So a Pub Manager running it at the pub they work at and presumably hold a license for needs to run it properly so as not to break the rules particularly where alcohol is concerned.

That doesn't mean some well meaning people don't know that and just run it how they like for random charities or the PTA. Normally for a tombola you would have a book of raffle tickets and stick all the tickets ending in a 0 or 5 on the prizes randomly and then fold all of the other tickets up jn a bucket. The person picks the ticket and matches it to a prize, the person wins that prize and should not swap unless for an alcohol free item (that is not another prize but held separately - the pub manager could have done this). Alcohol must be sealed and there must be a complete chance of winning / not winning. Obviously we've all been to places that have swapped but they shouldn't and normally that's run by people who havent got a job to lose if found to have done it wrong and dont know the rules in the first place. Similarly see selling raffle tickets on advance of events - that's a big no-no too without the correct documentation, doesn't mean places don't do it.

I've always been lucky at tombola. Once when I was about 8 or 9 I won an exterior light kit. I gave it to my GPs who were delighted (as was I). Never even crossed my mind (or my parents) to complain and ask for an age appropriate prize.

Come on OP. It was a pound. My 7 year old would think this was hilarious. And would probably make me give them a fiver for the wine. Which I would do.

Seven is surely old enough to take pleasure in giving the won wine to you or another adult relative? You play for fun not the amazing prizes.

That's not how tombola works. You get whatever prize is attached to your ticket.

Just take your prize and go. If you don't want your kid to win wine, don't let them enter a game where wine is a prize.

The whole point of a tombola is your donating to a charity if you win anything it's a bonus

There really is no rule preventing a child buying a tombola ticket where some the prizes are alcohol

So your daughter who shouldn't have been able to buy a ticket for the "tombola containing alcohol" used your money and bought a ticket, and won alcohol.

Obviously you gave it back, as you can't be this indignant about them not substituting for something else, but not pearl clutching that she shouldn't have even had a ticket in the first place?...

There's supposed to be a kids' tombola and an adult one to avoid falling foul of licensing.

No of course they didn't have to! DD won a pack of bath bombs at her school tombola that she couldn't use because of eczema- I didn't expect them to swap them it's just a £1 tombola at school, I bought her some sweets instead and older DD and me used the bath bombs

Not really because towards the end of the day you’re just left with all the crap and no one spends any money on the stall any more.

The beauty of a Tombola is your chance to either win a great or a duff prize depending on the number you pull out.

The number on the prize matches the number on your ticket. That’s how the OP’s daughter knew she’d won the wine.

I think she had gone and told her mum about it, to be honest! They always had lots of sweets and snacks at their house so probably wasn't (I hope)!

Really? How would it affect the liquor license to just swop a wine prize with a child friendly prize and let an adult win the wine.

Does anyone know what number belongs to what prize? I thought you just got a random prize, but if they are listed for everyone to see then I suppose it’s a different story, unless they just change it there and then to list the wine number with the teddy and vice versa.

I wouldn't expect them to swap it, I'd be surprised and pleased if they had but wouldn't have asked as it really is 'you win what you win', right?

I remember winning a massive jar of those plastic golf things that they balance the ball on (tees?), I was 8 and gutted! But my best friend's mum insisted we swap, she had won a huge jar of sweets and said her husband would like the tees instead. Don't know if that was true but it made my day.

if your child was in a pub. they probably assumed (possibly incorrectly) that she was with a responsible adult.

if you want her to have child friendly stuff, encourage he to spend her money in a toy shop. As a PP suggested, buy chocolate or something she'd like in return for the wine.
