To have expected them to swap DD’s tombola prize?

DD had a go on a family tombola this morning in a family pub/restaurant style place. She won and it was bottle of wine. I asked if she could swap it for one of the more child friendly prizes or one of the teddies but they refused. So she’s won a bottle of wine that she can’t even have! AIBU to have excepted them to swap DD’s prize?

At my school fete, we have separate children and adult tombolas so the alcohol goes to the adult tombola. Saves this problem.

But if the prizes are mixed, you just suck it up. I've lost count of the number of crap prizes that dd won at various fetes over the years, We just donated them to the next one that was asking for donations.

I echo the many posters saying that you should have taken the wine yourself (woman on the stall did the right thing by bringing it over to you) and given your dd money to buy some sweets.

You just swap the numbers on the prize, that’s all. It takes 2 seconds.

so if you give her a child friendly prize. You take the number off the child prize and then put it on the bottle of wine, sorted.

This would be the easiest thing to do after a child had won alcohol.

BREAKING NEWS

29 September 2024

The rules of Tombola are now amended with immediate effect as @LionMummy8 doesn't like them. From now going forward the stall holder should change the ticket number allocated to each prize, as per the ticket holders instruction.

In commment, the Tombola society stated that this will severely hinder the spirit of the game, but understands that by not amending the rules, it could cause some upset with ticket holders expectations.

OP for the love of all these holy, don't go do Hook a Duck. Thank you.

There were other child friendly prizes there.

where I work, when a child wins alcohol on a tombola we let them swap it for a more suitable prize. That’s just the right thing to do.

Nah, that's the fun of tombolas, surely?!
You don't know what you're going to get.
The bald Dad might get a hair care set, little old Granny gets a motorbike cleaning kit....😁
Least they won something instead of coming home empty handed.
I'd be like "ooh, that's my night sorted, ta!" and grab the wine 😁

Demonhunter · 29/09/2024 14:47

I wonder if they could do that next time I enter a competition to win a new car and I win a free entry into the next draw instead. All they have to do is swap my ticket number with the other prize. It's so simple, I don't know why more people aren't suggesting this.

That’s what a tombola is. Don’t do it if you don’t want to take the risk.

Just drink the wine and buy her a 🧸

rainbowunicorn · 29/09/2024 14:47

What a load of drama about nothing. For goodness sake, that's the whole point of a tombola you take what you get. It's just a bit of fun.

NahNotHavingIt · 29/09/2024 14:46

Bob is allergic to chocolate so needs to swap.

Barbara doesn't wear make-up so needs to swap.

Jimmy doesn't want or need an air fryer recipe book so needs to swap.

Vegetarian Vera can't eat the jelly sweets, due to the pork gelatin so needs to swap.

If you start all that malarky, it'll end up more like a bring and buy sale than a tombola.

MumonabikeE5 · 29/09/2024 14:46

Buy your child a gift and swap it for the wine. If you don’t drink wine then then use the wine as a gift for an adult.

xyz111 · 29/09/2024 14:46

Of course you can't. Otherwise everyone would be wanting to swap prizes. That's the point of a tombola, you win whatever the ticket is. If she was upset I would have said well stop off at the shop and get a chocolate bar on the way home.

ScruffMuffin · 29/09/2024 14:45

I won a bottle of wine on a tombola when I was about 8. My mum had to be summoned to collect it. She was delighted, and I was pleased that my 20p (or however much it cost) made her happy. In later life, I've won tomato ketchup and Fruit Shoots on tombolas sometimes. That's just how it works!

But what if you’re only left with alcohol then?
The right thing to do is drink the wine and buy your DD some sweets as a swap.

LostittoBostik · 29/09/2024 14:44

Obviously you can't swap it because it messes up the number system

Whaleandsnail6 · 29/09/2024 14:43

I agree with you but "you cant mess with the tombola" made me spit my drink out laughing!

😄

And you'll end up with someone getting a tin of mushy peas when they should have got wine or something. You just can't mess with the tombola it's not on.

wafflesmgee · 29/09/2024 14:42

Hahaha I can just picture the lady's bemused face when you went over and asked to swap the prize! Ridiculous and rude behaviour on your part.

Thfrog · 29/09/2024 14:41

LionMummy8 · 29/09/2024 14:40

The lady running the tombola was the deputy general manager.

Then she's on dodgy ground letting kids gamble for alcohol

isthismylifenow · 29/09/2024 14:40

😂 I also feel like I was at the wrong one when I won a plastic icing set.

I don't bake.

But seeing as I know how tombola works, I did not get upset and make a MN thread about it. I gave it to my mum instead.

I'm normal like that.

Yeah this is what you're meant to do. Or...donate it to the next tombola, and then every time there's the same crap prizes no one wants.

Bonjovispjs · 29/09/2024 14:41

Great result I'd say. You got a bottle of wine for a quid.

And then the next kid who gets the bottle of wine, with the number on that should have been a child friendly prize, but there are no child friendly prizes left… they get the short straw?

WiserOlderElf · 29/09/2024 14:40

Anyway can’t you just give her £1 to buy some sweets and drink the wine yourself? At 7 your child should know that you don’t always get the thing you want. Is she even bothered, or are you just raging at the injustice?

UpTheMagicFarawayTree · 29/09/2024 14:39

Utterly bizarre that you've even felt the need to post about this. A complete non event. I think you need to consider the things you are making a fuss about and, in turn, what that is teaching tour child about how someone should behave.
