DH refusing to drive my car

DH’s car is in the garage and has been for a week now (they are saying he won’t get it back until the end of next week!) which has left me to do all the driving over the past week. DH drives a tiny Fiat 500. I’ve tried to get him to drive my Tiguan over the past week but he just refuses and says it’s “too big” for him to drive compared to his Fiat. So I’ve had to do all the driving for the past week, including dropping him off at places where he could just drive to himself while I stay at home with DD but instead I have to drive him there because he refuses to drive my car. AIBU to just expect him to drive my car until he gets his car back and stop complaining that my car is too big? For example, last night he went for a meal with a friend, I had to take DD out the house twice to drop him off and pick him up, he could have just driven himself there like he would normally in his car but he wouldn’t do it as apparently my car is “too big” for him to drive,

If he can’t drive your car then he can’t go out for dinners with friends. It’s only a week. What it does mean is that he will be at home with your daughter so you can go out in your car for dinner with your friends.

Singinghollybob · 30/09/2024 10:29

YABU. You choose to drive him. You then can't moan about it.

Yes. It’ll take him 2 buses to get to work and 2 to get home.

Diddums!

What an excuse for a man!

He's saying no to driving your car, you can say no to being his taxi.

This.

Topseyt123 · 30/09/2024 09:31

I'd have told him that if he wanted to go out to the evening meal he could get a taxi. Or get a friend who was going to pick him up/drop him back. You absolutely did NOT have to take your child out twice, or at all.

I'd probably continue to help by taking him to work but that would be it unless I was going to the event too.

DH and I don't drive each other's cars. We don't go out that much anyway, but I guess we are both just a bit territorial over it.

DaisychainXYZ · 30/09/2024 09:21

Let him practise in an empty car park or something to start with?

HighlandCowbag · 30/09/2024 07:29

I sort of get it OP. Other way around but my car is a pick-up truck, so huge compared to DHs focus. Occasionally DH needs my car to do something (usually allotment related) and I have the focus. I feel really uncomfortable in it, and have to think about everything I do.

Driving a car, operating gears, lights etc becomes automatic in a car you know. A different car you have to really think about it. Plus going small to big is another psychological barrier to lots of people. I would say though that my car is easier to drive and move around. Visibility is better, and when reversing, I can clearly see the back end going where I need it to go. DH is a much better driver than me, but he struggles parking and reversing mine because he doesn't do it every day like me.

Oblomov24 · 30/09/2024 07:29

Of course he should be able to drive your bigger car, for a week only. What a berk! All drivers should be fully competent to drive any car, you may prefer a bigger car or a smaller car but you should be able to drive any.

cestlavielife · 30/09/2024 07:28

Taxi .
Courtesy car.
Just say no.
Say please take the car it s got comprehensive insurance

twentysevendresses · 30/09/2024 07:26

Good grief, what a wet husband you have! Refusing to drive himself and letting you chauffeur him round 🤢

I just couldn't sleep with this man again after this...totally unsexy 😖

@GlowingStar does he not feel embarassed driving a girls car???? I dont know any bloke who drives a tiny car like that!! they usually all opt for the big cars cos they think it compares to the size of their willie!!!

There's nothing embarrassing about driving a small car. DH used to drive our tiny, hideous yellow, Kia Piccanto around quite happily. What is embarrassing is being unable to drive a bigger car if you have a licence and being too lazy to even try.

It's also embarrassing to think he should be embarrassed about driving a smaller car usually.

StampOnTheGround · 30/09/2024 07:00

I have a small-medium sized car and are family car is now large, I was terrified of driving it - but now I prefer it (which is good, as it's the car we need to use for the kids really!)

Wtfdude · 30/09/2024 05:34

Fucking hell some of these comments are downright sexist shite.

I know quite a few men with small cars like fiat 500. I also have similar small car and refuse to drive husband's massive car. And the ones I hate most are sedans. Sounds ridiculous I know.

Yabu for ferrying him around a lot though. Bit of help fine, regular all the time drop offs, he should get rental as I would.

This is what crossed my mind as I don't think I've ever seen a man driving a Fiat 500

I work with a chap who thinks his Arbath is the dogs bollocks and floats about the long way home when he's in it! And he's over 6 foot tall! 😂

Well you are being unreasonable if you continue to drive him and then complain about it. Just tell him no.

I hate it when the first post(er) nails it!

AlecTrevelyan006 · 29/09/2024 23:23

He needs to man up.

Tink3rbell30 · 29/09/2024 23:06

Oh dear I am DH 😂 Fiat 500 driver who refuses to drive anything else. I just don't feel comfortable, I wouldn't expect to be ferried around though.

Pieandchips999 · 29/09/2024 22:31

@Codlingmoths I guess we all have different levels of confidence. I am an anxious driver due to be lots of scary driving situations included crashes as a child. My wife is autistic and gets high anxiety with change. Neither of us would feel too happy driving a bigger although I guess it's not massive. In fact we probably would go waa waa waa. However I'd also then not expect to be ferried everywhere. Can't see it's any different for a man

It doesn't seem to be an issue as she isn't going to drive your car but the third party driving other cars part on your insurance has exclusions for partners with some insurances and also mainly covers occasional unplanned situations. I'd be very careful about suggesting this. I also wouldn't pressure dh to drive a car he didn't feel competent and safe driving as he might have an accident and you aren't covered for the damage. It doesn't mean you have to ferry him everywhere however. Hopefully the situation will be resolved soon with a more suitable replacement

I understand feeling anxious about driving, I don’t like driving on big roads with multi lanes that I don’t know where I have to be in the right one to get my exit etc. But I prepare for it, look at the route, think it through, make a plan and do it. I don’t just say no wah I can’t dh you have to drive us.
