To be sick of propaganda on MN

Apolitia · 28/09/2024 19:48

Recently there seems to have been an outbreak of fairly overt political propagandising on MN. Scenarios and views presented as ‘just what I think’ which I strongly suspect are not from your average MN punter.

This, and the weird AI/ reddit-type dilemmas (me 31M, 33F blaaah, aargh) that frequently pop up are putting me right off. And I’ve been here for more than a decade.

Mayve I’m just old and grumpy and it’s a sign to put down my phone and talk to actual people :/

I think people forget what it was like over the years on here when the Tories were in power. There were so many similar threads on here then, and so much scaremongering about Brexit. How we were going to have massive food shortages etc.

The boots on the other foot now and the Labour supporters on here don't like it. Yes some of it is getting a bit boring now but if you don't like it, just scroll by.

Getting tiresome isn’t it? And we’re only a few weeks in…

Did you miss the bit where I said I am not a Labour voter?

Whether you’re a Labour voter or not isn’t concerning to me. Watching various posters try and undermine mainstream media outlets, to suit their own political views has been a familiar sight on MN, disagreement is frequently framed as ‘Tory’, ‘bot’, ‘Labour champagne socialist’, these are all reductive terms designed to hinder freedom of speech and close the debate. What’s the point of a forum without differing opinions?

Just things that to me do not appear to be written by casual commentators and feel disingenuous

It's a fairly well known site, @Apolitia, so is always going to be targeted by those keen to push something other than a genuinely held personal view

Luckily it's usually pretty easy to spot though, and even easier to scroll by

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 29/09/2024 12:49

There has been a lot of Tory propaganda which is quite blatantly such on here. It doesn’t even read like normal people’s write iyswim.

All this stuff about expenses and “do you regret voting Labour now?”. It’s really blatant.

80smonster · 29/09/2024 12:47

Apolitia · 29/09/2024 12:17

Is that aimed at me? I’m not a Labour voter, and even if I was I would still feel the same about state and non-state colonisation of women’s social spaces.

It’s aimed at the many threads which I believe your post addresses, such as the Keir Starmer one on AIBU?

PhoebeFeels · 29/09/2024 12:45

@MermaidEyes ,These WW3 threads; are they the result of people reading the "Armageddon" interpretation of the Global Warming problem as spouted by Just Stop Oil and others? As if the world will suddenly heat up and fry us all.
We know there is a problem and we are managing the thing that we control.

poetryandwine · 29/09/2024 12:43

YANBU, but I think you need to tread carefully, OP.

I don’t mind pointing out when a real shit stirring post has come out under a new user name, abs I think most of us underestimate the propensity of the gutter press, the Tory party and especially hostile governments for stirring the pot (there has been much research into the last).

But a minority of these posts are from long time Mumsnetters and I think we do owe them the courtesy of civil disagreement

Apolitia · 29/09/2024 12:42

And no, of course I don’t think Rosie Duffield is a bot - I don’t understand that comment at all. Are you saying that because she is a Labour politician and has crtiticised Labour, that propagandism on social media can’t be a thing? Logically one thing doesn’t follow the other.

That’s totally fine.

This isn’t about criticism and calling people out. That’s really healthy in a democracy.

It’s about the use of social media by propagandists and those who aren’t just chancing by for a chat. There are whole bodies of academic research from within the political science and history disciplines looking at how interest and power groups have shaped public discourse. I’m not saying anything astoundingly new, I’ve just noticed an uptick here on mumsnet and was making an observation.

OP, I think it's reasonable to question whether propagandists are using Mumsnet to influence political discussions. Trouble is being able to identify who the propagandists are? I'm always horrified at posters who descend on threads where women / parents are discussing safeguarding children and accuse women of being "pearl clutchers "etc. Apart from the sexist language, I wonder why safeguarding children threads so attract their attention and scorn? But that's because I place a high store on parents being able to tease out and speak freely about safeguarding children without being shamed.

The motivations of posters are often a mystery and I suppose there's nothing that we can do to "police" it. Imho, MNHQ are pretty swift to identify and ban dodgy posters.

80smonster · 29/09/2024 12:38

It’s absolutely bewildering to watch those who allegedly support left wing politics want to exacerbate freedom of speech for others. Aside from being completely undemocratic, it’s screams of low intelligence and an inability to debate current affairs, anyone who dares disagree is a labelled a bot or a Tory. Certain Labour voters want the conversation shut down because it doesn’t suit their personal political agenda. It’s disgraceful. I am neither a Tory nor a Labour voter, if people could allow themselves to be free thinkers, rather than tribally aligned, Mumsnet would be vastly more interesting read.

Whilst there is a problem on many sites with bots be careful of thinking everyone without your opinion is a bot. Unless you love echo chambers?

Well this. This is clearly exactly what is happening here.

CherryVanillaPie · 29/09/2024 12:31

Alltheunreadbooks · 28/09/2024 20:28

It's not that Keir Starmer should be immune to criticism, but the obvious Tory propaganda bots spamming this site...and being allowed to spam it...are getting boring.

Starmer will never be as cruel, incompetent and corrupt as the last 3 Prime Ministers before him , no matter how many melodramatic threads get started on here.

Agreed

tryingagaintoday · 29/09/2024 12:30

Hatty65 · 28/09/2024 21:27

This.

And all the bollocks about 'Do you regret voting Labour'...'Ooh - Labour have been in for 3 weeks and already everyone hates them, 'OMG, whole country is rioting and it is all Labour's fault'.

It's pathetic. 14 fucking years of Tory shite and within 5 minutes there are all sorts of wide eyed 'Mums' pretending they are innocent posters trying to convince others that Labour is a HUGE mistake.

The worst is the trotting out that every old age pensioner is now going to be dying of the cold thanks to wicked Keir Starmer and his evil plans. It is so tedious, as well as insulting to most intelligent women.

Clearly the Tories think 'wimmin' are all a bit dim and might swallow this shit cos of course we need other people to tell us what to think.

You do realise there have been plenty of charities and community orgs making similar concerned comments on the news? I guess they are all thick wimmin too 🙄

I am neither a Labour nor Conservative voter but I entirely expect both Labour and Conservative voters to start threads expressing their opinions.

That Labour supporters think the Tory ones are ‘propaganda’ but their own, presumably, are not (even the dirge I am replying to above) speaks volumes about the Labour mentality.

I haven't noticed any uptick, s there were frequent threads criticising the Conservative party
There will obviously be an increase in threads criticising the Labour Party because we now have a Labour government.

Give over. People have different opinions, different views. Wide range of people on MN. Why do you think the posts criticising Labour are bots, but the ones criticising the Tories are apparently genuine? I hate the propaganda stuff on the Middle East, but just avoid reading them. Can’t you do the same? The clue is usually in the title - if you see something that’s going to get on your nerves, just scroll on by……

User37482 · 29/09/2024 11:44

Maybe people just don’t agree with you!? Why would someone be spreading propaganda years and years away from an election? The majority of the UK didn’t vote for Labour so it’s not that surprising that most aren’t overly keen.

Serious conspiracy theory stuff. I thought this would be a thread about Mossad agents or something.

I think this is a very naïve take on how politics works.

It's not just the politics threads, it's the WW3 threads too. Every one of them seems to be started by a 'newbie' and they're all 'absolutely terrified'. Either MN is full of anxiety ridden peeps or someone else has an agenda.
(There's literally another one just popped up on active this morning 🙄)

Yes, and these threads as well.

Doubtless some of them are by real posters – including real posters who've been wound up by something they've been given by their Facebook feed.

(Lot of that during the Brexit referendum, like the ones who were anxious about the whole of Turkey immigrating to the UK because of the the non-existent "Turkey joining of the EU". I quite believe some were genuine posters, genuinely anxious, about fake news.)

But some, as you say, are by supposed "newbies". Mm-hm.

Another Labour voter who feels uncomfortable when they don’t occupy the moral high ground, but was happy to scream ‘pay the VAT’ in others faces for weeks if not months on end. Sorry guys, Starmer did you all up like kippers, now you’re going to have to listen to the comeuppance for the next 5 years, sucks to be you…

I think there are a lot of relatively wealthy people who are absolutely terrified of paying a bit of extra tax, and they’ve whipped themselves up into hysteria over it.

I saw Starmer described on here as ‘the most evil PM in history’ over the WFA. Poor families have lost hundreds of pounds a week under the Tories and children are going hungry, but now that pensioners (most on a decent income) have lost £3 something a week, that is “most evil”.

There was a headline article in the Mail this week about a single mother with 8 kids. Usual benefits bashing story, along with nasty comments. The next article down was a ‘Money’ article with someone asking for advice on how to gift their home to their children so they could avoid paying their own care costs when the time comes. The consensus was that this was a perfectly legitimate and sensible thing to do. The double standards is nauseating.

Conservatives have no power now, so they’re resorting to bleating online.

To be fair, that particular mother has been on TV for a lot of years, publicising herself. She contacts the media, especially the DM.

Before the benefit cap, she used to boast how much she claimed, and the luxuries she bought etc. Anyone that worked was a fool etc.🙄

She thought she was clever.

This story was her boasting how many breast jobs etc she had funded on benefits. 🤷‍♀️
