Those protestors actually make me feel even less bothered by climate change. I genuinely don't give a shit anymore.

Have they managed to convince anyone?

I don't think there is anything meaningful I can do.

I hope you don't own a car, don't go to concerts or shows that involve people flying in using private planes, don't holiday anywhere but near home, don't produce any landfill (there are people actually doing that).

If it made a difference, I suspect I'm actually willing to give up more comforts than most so called greenies. I support a radical revamp of the earth and how we live, but the world's not going to follow that, so I just get on with the world as it is.

No one is going to be able to be zero carbon in this country but most of us can do something to lower our own admissions and if the majority do then that does make a difference. It will motivate others to do the same. Industries will adapt to the consumers. We can all lobby our MPs when climate related issues come up. We can all talk about it.

It’s not about wearing hair shirts and eating grass. It’s making small incremental changes.

Windchimesandsong · 29/09/2024 12:12

Re the soup. Although in no way comparable to their previous actions - the attempted murder and manslaughter (delaying ambulances etc), it's very unenvironmentally friendly to waste food.

They want to help the environment? Then give the soup to foodbanks.

Reuse, recycle and donate unwanted items - including soup, mend and repair.

If JSO care about climate change, why don't they do constructive things like that instead of harmful, damaging - and unenvironmentally friendly actions?

grumpypedestrian · 29/09/2024 12:11

What happens when future generations can’t access hospitals or use roads because of the long term effects on infrastructure?

JSO inconveniencing people for a few hours is nothing compared to no action being taken and roads becoming unusable. Then how are people going to get to the hospital?

Well we’re all here discussing it, so that’s a start. Admittedly, I’m no “eco-warrior”. It’s only through conversations like this one where I realise how many people care more about being inconvenienced by protests than the message itself that I actually started to pay a little more attention. I’m not a complete convert yet and still do many things that I’m sure don’t help JSO’s cause, but at the very least I’m a little more aware now. I wonder how many other people like me are out there?

‘JSOs cause’ - I’ll correct that for you. ‘The breakdown of our climate here on earth, leading to food scarcity, water shortages, more extreme and dangerous weather events, far less habitable land, mass migration, higher mortality and morbidity, less stability and more wars.’

It really isn’t a ‘cause’ like animal welfare. It’s our existence. And whatever JSO do or don’t do and how you feel about it, you have be either uninformed, of low cognitive ability or dead not to care.

@ColdinSeptember it isn’t just that the public transport is rubbish outside of cities, many rely on cars to do their jobs, I live rurally and work in community nursing alongside many home carers, we will always need cars to care for the ever growing elderly population in those rural areas with more and more hospital at home being called for. There is no alternative transport for that therefore I will always need my car, electric is not a viable solution for me currently due to costs and no option of charging at home

How do they 'fuck a whole city', given lots of city dwellers dont use cars - they walk, cycle and use public transport- tad exaggeration, no?

Yeah when people need an ambulance they can just walk or use public transport Confused Wait, no they can't.

But also as more people in cities use public transport, why do JSO target cities? And please don't try to claim it's because those in power care. They usually live rurally. Even if they live in a city for work they'll often have a second home and/or retire somewhere rural.

Btw there's lots of people in cities who need cars. Elderly and disabled people and carers exist in cities. There's also the need for trades work and delivery of essential goods to businesses and homes that requires a car or van.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/09/2024 12:03

You do realise the planet will one day turn to helium and all human life will cease??
Climate change is just part of the process

Given that human life's a mere pinprick on the fabric of time I'd expect it to have ended long before it comes to that, @clarkkentsglasses, but I agree with the principle

As you suggest the climate has always changed, and those models people set such store by when it suits indicate previous extremes of heat and cold long before humans were around
They were before lavish funding and social media were around too though, which may explain why some think it's only what's happening now which has any possible relevance

One very quick and easy thing you can do is stop posting things that are demotivating to others who might want to make changes. There are all kinds of things we can all do and one of them is to be honest about it and not brush it under the carpet and ignore it.

NewGreenDuck · 29/09/2024 11:46

@Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot but it's not making a huge number of people do anything different. It's just making people, and yes I'm one, feel that they are a bunch of insufferable idiots.
I suspect it's making lots of people highly unlikely to listen to them, or modify their lifestyle in any way. And Cressie's mum being upset about her non attendance at a wedding! Give me a break!

Throwing paint over the plastic protection of a painting draws attention to the climate crisis in a way that direct information hasn't. Has no one noticed the flooding and wildfires in Europe and elsewhere this summer.
Reading the reactions of the ignorant on this thread who will continue to to drive their gas guzzlers 20 metres to school and continue to wear single use clothes from shein has prompted me to join Just Stop Oil (although not front line at present as I can't do my HCP/scientist job with a criminal record that can wait till retirement).

I could understand you wanting to do more grassroots stuff and direct environmental volunteering action etc, I'm very much like that myself. But I don't get why you'd join JSO. I think they are actively turning people off. I think everyone's also heard about climate change already so this 'raising awareness' they do is a few years out of date/redundant already.

Yamantau · 29/09/2024 11:00

why would you trust scientists when they could be influenced by big business on either side to say x,y,z etc

You had to just read the data from studies. Then you can make your own decisions. Doesn't matter what people say after the fact if you do that because you'll already know for yourself.

I was actually thinking about this last week! I got stuck in a horrendous traffic jam and my son's were joking maybe someone glued themselves to the road. It didn't turn out to be that, but if they made me sit in a traffic jam on the motorway for 2 hours I'd go mental at them. I think they are bloody useless self indulgent wankers. I think they're just performative tbh.

For context I am very proud environment and try to make good environmentally friendly choices.

Well you trust scientists who will apparently be building an empire for humanity in space in 100 years.

Yamantau · 29/09/2024 11:00

SodaFountainMountain · 29/09/2024 09:05

So may be there is a small chance that something will come along to save us. But why risk it?

With any risk assessment you weigh up the likelihood of it happening and what the consequences might be. Well, we know it’s already happening and at a much accelerated rate than predicted, and we know the impact is catastrophic and already happening.

So do we keep our fingers crossed, or do we take the actions we know could lessen the worst of it?

Imagine your roof was leaking and about to cave in and all but one of the builders in town have said it will collapse in the next year without remedial work. The one builder that said ‘nah, it will be ok’ was, at the time, down the pub nursing his fifth pint. Would you just hope the drunk builder was right and keep your fingers crossed that someone will invent a sky umbrella to stop the rain getting in?

why would you trust scientists when they could be influenced by big business on either side to say x,y,z etc

Yamantau · 29/09/2024 10:58

thepariscrimefiles · 29/09/2024 09:14

OMG you've solved the climate crisis! How long is going to take to build an empire for humanity in space? Can I stop re-cycling yet??

it took roughly 100 years to achieve the tech we have so im guessing not that long

Mamma273627 · 29/09/2024 10:48

I don't think the actions of JSO changes anyone's minds. I do think for a small percentage of people that don't care about climate change it turns them off the issues even more though. It's like toddlers having a tantrum and breaking their own stuff and blocking the aisles so people can't get past. So I don't support what they do - it's stupid and pointless and it's just ruining stuff or causing havoc for a lot of people without actually engaging more people in very serious issues.

Are we talking about climate change though or are we talking about the activists? I'd like to talk about climate change but I haven't got the patience to navigate between the narcissists who think they are changing the world one tin of orange gunk at a time and the weirdos who have crafted it into a kind of neo-religious morality tale.

Absolutely this. I hate the whole 'oh everyone is talking about them it's working' shite. We're talking about them being morons, usually with a sprinkling of privilege chucked in. We're not talking about the cause!

FurierTransform · 29/09/2024 10:14

JSO are a good example of how NOT to protest. They are a total PR disaster for their cause, to the extent thst you could reasonably conclude that they are being funded by oil companies.

I also am not fussed about the soup. But that wasn't my point. My point was that doing it hasn't actually changed anyone's mind or behaviour over the matter (imo).

I'm well aware my house is more at risk from wild fires due to climate warming impacts. I wouldn't drive to school or buy from fast fashion places like that, but I will drive 90 minutes each way to spend the day in the amazing forest that far away. Also had more than two children.

Hopefully my rewilding and planting for wildlife efforts help offset it a bit.

savannahowl · 28/09/2024 16:31

if this generation doesn’t work it out, there isn’t a future as the effects will be too severe to reverse.

Don't be ridiculous

I can't stand Just Stop Oil but sadly you are either naive or stupid if you think it won't affect your children. The amount it will affect them depends on what we collectively do now.
