Those protestors actually make me feel even less bothered by climate change. I genuinely don't give a shit anymore.

Have they managed to convince anyone?

Zombie thread.

Has the climate threat gone away?

I honestly will not reduce consumption I want to do. I will not go on less holidays than I can afford and take

Gall10 · 24/09/2025 14:58

I remember news reports 25yrs ago saying that in 25yrs time (now) we’d be growing grapes on the banks of the Tyne…last night I had my fire (gas!) and lecky blanket on…growing grapes my arse!

We'll probably find out one day that they're funded by oil companies to turn people against environmental causes.

I was just going to say exactly this!

They are counter-productive. And so is/was Extinction Rebellion. My very environmentally-aware daughter definitely thought they were secretly subverting the message and alienating people.

We are a very aware family (hardly fly, hardly drive, recycle till we’re blue in the face, not really big ‘consumers’, shop locally…etc etc) but I think these protesters are a lot of attention-seeking virtue-signallers who actually harm the cause.

And the industrial revolution led to the quality of life improving in the UK and led to poverty falling.

If the UK immediately hit net zero tomorrow nothing would change globally. Green house gases are well mixed, our impact is near 0.

Holidays are fun. I took many holidays this year. Flew to India, the US and also had a nice short haul flight to Vienna in the summer.

If an industry uses renewable energy or low carbon fuel I'm happy about it. I'm not gonna reduce my consumption because I might emit slightly less CO2.

Why have you resurrected a year old thread?

Not gonna do most of this. The UK is only 1% of emissions. I like flying to go on holiday. Definitely won't reduce consumption at all.

The y are throwing at the plastic cases around irreplaceable paintings - not causing damage just drawing attention

Oh ok - that’s all right then.

Wait, it really isn’t.

Fucking morons.

No hate, but yes, irked as you say earlier in your post.

Nor mired in ‘despicable’ humans, although I do question your grouping of Murdoch with Putin, and will otherwise ignore your Netanyahu inclusion.

But, back to the thread - JSO are a rabble rousing fake-intellectual collective who simply target the wrong people and are ignorant to the disruption they cause.

As for throwing liquids at priceless paintings, please.

I'm honestly wondering why some people on this thread are quite so irked by the JSO protests..... arguably they here are mired in despicable humans (Netanyahu, Putin, Trump, Rupert Murdoch... why do some folk trying to make a perfectly valid point (albeit through questionable means) inspire quite so much hate?

I don't understand why Just Stop Oil's specific tactics would sway you either way on taking the climate crisis seriously. The science is still the science regardless of whether they pull stunts or not. Deciding you don't believe in it based on headline-grabbing stunts rather than actually reading and researching the facts seems rather stupid.

Well said.
As someone with 40 yrs working in environmental management and sustainability I don't need JSO to tell me about the seriousness of climate change and tbe urgency of taking actikn, but their tactics have definitely allowed others to disengage with this most inconvenient of subjects - just read this thread!
And in answer to a previous PP, no we're not talking about many generations ino the future.

because some of there methods risk the deaths of others when they block roads etc

Windchimesandsong · 30/09/2024 21:39

I don't understand your reply@GoldLameDarling

Perhaps I've misunderstood, but are you accusing the many posters on here, including me, who are concerned about the environment - and do what we can (without harming or antagonising others) of being "despicable humans"?

GoldLameDarling · 30/09/2024 21:18

Windchimesandsong · 30/09/2024 19:54

@Puzzledandpissedoff I'm so sorry that happened to you.

@GoldLameDarling Why does the potential future situation justify doing things that kill or seriously harm people now? (I posted upthread some examples of the deaths and harm caused). There's simply no moral justification ever.

Also although the soup throwing isn't violence like the road blocking was, I don't get how it helps. It's actually unenvironmentally friendly, because it's wasting food.

I've said previously on this thread it would be better if they instead spent their time and money on positive and constructive things instead (I made a few suggestions of what they could do).

I’ll admit I don’t really understand those who are so opposed to their methods. Protests aren’t meant to be neat or convenient. Surely their long-term goals are more important than the material things they ruin on the way?

Not when they block motorways and stop people getting to hospital, emergency vehicles coming through, make people miss really significant events. I worry they will kill someone.

@Snugglemonkey 100,s and 1000's of people WILL die from climate change. Why aren't you worried about that?

I am. But I still don't see the need to start killing people off early.

TempestTost · 30/09/2024 19:59

GoldLameDarling · 30/09/2024 19:12

So fuck it then, let's stick our heads in the sand @TempestTost ?

No one has said that.

Pointing out that there are serious and difficult problems is not people sticking their heads in the sand, it's the opposite.

People pretending it's all clear what needs to happen and ignoring the problems with no evident way forward - that is very much sticking their head in the sand.

We really must question whom it serves to paint climate activism in a light of insincerity, hypocricy and privilege. Why is it so juicy to imagine all protesters as pampered Portias who lack substance and integrity? Could it be that what is portrayed through our media is somewhat skewed and not actually representative? It makes fantastic click-bait after all, and conveniently allows us to think of those protesting climate issues as somehow 'other' than ourselves.
