To buy 3 year old DD dinosaurs for Christmas?

My little girl (3) loves dinosaurs at the moment, every time I pick her up from nursery they say she's loved playing with the little toy dinosaur set and doing all the noises etc.

We are making a start on buying her Christmas presents this month and I mentioned to a friend I was thinking about getting her some toy dinosaurs as she doesn't have any at home. Friend commented that it was "funny" and "a bit odd" to buy them for a girl. And "bet it's like having a boy". I mean, she also has some Elsa dolls in her Christmas present pile, so it's a mixture of girly and less girly type presents!

Is my DD "odd" for liking dinosaurs at 3 years old?! 🤔

If so that's only £10 from The Entertainer, on offer at the moment!

It's not this, is it?

@dinosaurgirll , I had a look for the toy I mentioned, it’s called Dino Mountain by ELC. I’m now feeling officially old, it’s listed for £35 on eBay and referred to as vintage.
My girls had hours of fun with it, roaring dinosaurs chasing my little ponies for ages.

WhappleBee · 28/09/2024 13:13

Ridiculous of your friend to say. Just did Mary Anning (female fossil hunter) as a topic at school with year 1 and 2 and both boys and girls loved it! All the Dino facts and they were outraged that she wasn’t rich and famous for her work just because she was a girl!

Also there’s a lovely Dino themed chocolate birthday cake in Tesco atm btw!

I have a knitted dinosaur jumper and a cardigan with dinosaur buttons.

Links please! Grin

dinosaurgirll · 28/09/2024 13:04

I have found the perfect book for her, encompassing both of her current interests - dinosaurs and poo 😂

Although she prefers "sparkly poo" to regular - however I think a sparkly pooping dinosaur might be a bit too niche? 😬

Thanks to the PP who shared a link to a sparkly poo cushion - you've saved Christmas 😂

Because when you hear it from someone close to you it can make you doubt even your strongest of views.

but its not someone close, the OP says this is a new friend.

'Is my DD "odd" for liking dinosaurs at 3 years old?! '

Not in the slightest. But your friend is.

Buy her what she wants/needs. Dinosaurs are harmless - unless you believe Jurassic Park is real.

Erring on casual sexism/homophobia?

YellowphantGrey · 28/09/2024 12:55

Hate to break it to you but the majority of 3 year-olds all go through a dinosaur phase, boys and girls, nothing special about it.

Tell your friend a penis isn't relevant when it comes to choosing interests and hobbies, you will blow her mind!

Stewandsocks · 28/09/2024 12:50

You might make her trans, so no.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 28/09/2024 12:49

Around 50% of dinosaurs WERE girls. Fact.

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/09/2024 12:44

Of course you should buy her dinosaurs. Your friend is the weird one.

It's 2024! Obviously the dinosaurs should be pink and make sure she only plays happy dino families with them. No asteroids or anything. That'd be science.

Haha, well the ones she plays with at nursery are dinosaur coloured and she likes to make loud "roar!" noises with them. So I'm not sure she will conform to playing happy pink dino families 😂

Penguinmouse · 28/09/2024 12:35

How depressing that we consider dinosaurs “boy toys” and are making those assumptions at the age of three. Get your daughter a gift she would actually enjoy and don’t be trapped by gender stereotypes.

godmum56 · 28/09/2024 12:29

thia a bit too.

Dramatic · 28/09/2024 12:33

My dd never liked dinosaurs but she loved cars and monster trucks so she got a car garage and monster trucks for Christmas. She also loves Barbies and dolls, but living in a slightly backwards place I did get a few comments about it and one friend even said her husband would never allow her to buy her daughter boys toys.

5128gap · 28/09/2024 12:32

That's so sad, to think in this day and age there are people like your friend who would deny a child a toy they'd love, and discourage their interest in something just because the child is female. There is no justification whatsoever in withholding something from your child on the basis of their sex. Your friend is very wrong.

godmum56 · 28/09/2024 12:29

thia a bit too.

Shock maybe, and not wanting to have to lose or challenge a potential family friend? I can understand this. "How can this be real" and going to a forum to feel steady again.

godmum56 · 28/09/2024 12:29

Differentstarts · 28/09/2024 12:11

But why would you doubt that or even give it a second of headspace unless something inside you thought she was right.

thia a bit too.

Edingril · 28/09/2024 12:28

So cheetahs and horses are for boys?

Exactly! Unicorns (that don't exist) and kittens (with bows in their hair) are for girls.

godmum56 · 28/09/2024 12:28

Thelnebriati · 28/09/2024 11:20

Please keep an eye on the situation and don't let your friend shame your DD for her interests. Kids pick up on that sort of thing. I'll never forget having my fossil collection chucked into the garden because 'thats where stones belong'.

I was about to come on here and say something similar. I know its overkill for one comment but is this an attitude you want around your daughter?

Carpetmoth · 28/09/2024 12:28

My 2 girls have a box full of Jurassic Park dinosaurs and other bits (they like the car). We even have the big t-rex which can fit items in its mouth. It frequently eats the Peppa Pig characters! Toys are toys.

Edingril · 28/09/2024 12:28

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 28/09/2024 12:26

Because dinosaurs live outdoors and go fast, and girls are destined to live indoors and wait on others? The toy stereotypes belong on a continuum with some of the worst societies we see...

So cheetahs and horses are for boys?
