To ask about your opinion on the RSPCA after Brian May resignation

He has resigned because the RSPCA's response to poor animal welfare was completely inadequate.
When I reported an animal in distress, they refused to investigate, and it was left to my local animal shelter -which is struggling for money - to come to the rescue.
I find it all extremely concerning. Does anyone else have any experiences?

On the one occasion I've contacted them because of the dire conditions that a horse was being kept in, they didn't want to know and told me they didn't have anyone available to do a visit. They said to contact them again a week later if the horse was still in the same condition. 1 week on it had deteriorated so another call was made, still no offer of a visit.
So what is their purpose if they refuse to do their job when asked? They are publicly funded and seem to be ineffective.
Certainly not the caring faces that they portray on their adverts.

Cartwrightandson · 28/09/2024 06:59

Yes! Absolutely useless, their adverts/marketing/pr shows them as animal heros but they are terrible.

First time in 2012 reported a feral cat in the top part of a shed had given birth to 3 kittens, they didn't do anything until one of the kittens fell and smashed both back legs and had to be pts, the other cats were dealt with by a local cats protection charity. The cats were feral and we couldn't get near them without being attacked.

A few months ago, 2 horses were put into a child's play park, with no water, one horses eye was red/swollen/oozing and the horses could get out onto a main road. The police, rspca, local city and county council wouldn't do a thing. They all palmed off to someone else, rspca said the police, police said try council, council said try rspca.... absolutely useless!!

cryinglaughing · 28/09/2024 06:51

My only surprise is that Brian May hung on in as long as he did.
Unless they are going to get massive publicity, they aren't interested in run of the mill requests for help, they will however show up for cases where multiple agencies are involved.

ClaraLane · 28/09/2024 06:46

They recently raided and killed over a thousand animals at a local animal sanctuary in Norfolk. Some because they weren’t legally allowed to be released back into the wild after being treated like grey squirrels and muntjacs due to old laws about them being invasive and some because they didn’t fit their criteria of being fit for release/rehoming in the RSPCA’s timeframe. Including approximately 300 feral cats that had a home there and were fed, chipped, snipped, vaccinated and received regular medical care but just couldn’t be rehomed. Look up Hallswood.

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 28/09/2024 06:41

Considering there have been multiple instances over the years of vicious dogs being rehomed to completely inappropriate families, or those families not being informed of the dogs nature, IMO the rspca should have been ‘cancelled’ sooner. In one case they deliberately lied to someone about the dogs bite history and it killed the new owner.

As with all big charities, profits and ego got in the way.

NewGreenDuck · 28/09/2024 06:38

I phoned about 2 seagulls that were on the ground unable to fly. I was told that gulls sleep on the ground. Well, when someone has been going round shooting at them, they can't fly, can they? A few weeks later they caught the person responsible, when more had been shot. I don't know what they do, but it doesn't seem much.

They are useless
I've rang them 4 times over the years and not once did they come out (all genuine calls)

The best one was my neighbour who loved to cause trouble for us-she called them to say I was mistreating my cat
They did come out,and hammered on my door demanding to see my cat
I didn't own a cat,but did point to my dog,who was snoozing away in her bed
The officer got pissed off with me and stood demanding to see the cat when it was quite clear I didn't own one!

They do get a lot of time wasting calls

They really do seem to choose what they care about based on the potential for drama and confrontation. A sick/endangered animal who is helped will toddle off happy, but with none of the validation for them that they crave. On the other hand, shouting at, bullying, patronising and threatening to sue people - even on entirely spurious or imaginary grounds - does make them feel important and somehow validated.

If the RSPCA were a MNer, they would 100% be one of those who actively seek out threads on topics that don't interest them at all and, instead of ignoring and scrolling on by to find something that does grab them, feel the need to engage to tell everybody else on the thread that they are wrong and stupid to want to discuss and engage with it - just as they are now doing!

Tel12 · 28/09/2024 06:34

I've contacted the RSPCA 3 times over decades and they have never assisted.

Blanketyre · 28/09/2024 06:31

Is there any way of eating cheese and milk without animal abuse? I'm vegetarian, have been for years, but I really don't want to become vegan. Thinking about it though

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 28/09/2024 06:23

Can’t read the awful stories.

He resigned because of cows at an M&S farm being mistreated, presumably then slaughtered and eaten. It’s never pretty, any way you want to stick a bow on it. “Corn fed, allowed to roam, gets a grassy field”- utter bollocks. The animal is still petrified when it’s killed. If you eat meat, cheese, milk you are ok with abuse, so make peace with it.

Thevelvelletes · 28/09/2024 06:20

Jesus, you couldn't show what you didn't have.

I called the RSPCA when we moved to our new house and after a couple of weeks found a dying badger at the end of our garden. He came out, did nothing for the badger, but gave us a threatening lecture about not approaching a badger sett and how it was illegal for us to go near it, despite being in our garden.

Devilsadvocat · 28/09/2024 06:05

Perhaps we should all individually write to King Charles and tell him to take the Royal stamp of approval off of this greedy lot. Or is it the gov we need to write to. If we all did this surely they would have to do something.
Perhaps The Sun would get up a petition they are good at that sort of thing. In any case something must be done, but where to start?

Anicecumberlandsausage · 28/09/2024 06:05

@TheHangingGardensOfBasildon precisely. The words Prevention of Cruelty to Animals no longer applies to them. I hope the RF soon distance themselves too (despite their fondness for blood sports).

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 28/09/2024 05:56

Can they and their actions be evaluated, with a possibility of the 'Royal' word being stripped from them, if those granting that privilege feel that they are not fulfilling their basic brief?

Countless times, they have been exposed as not really being bothered about actually preventing cruelty to animals - so maybe they should just change their name to 'Society', which appears to be the only accurate/deserved word in their name.

If I started up a new charity and named it after something that tugs on people's heartstrings, but then blatantly didn't do what the stated aim of the charity was or misdirected a boatload of the donations away from the purposes for which the givers had clearly been misled into giving them for, I would rightly be in prison. I guess this is the privilege of becoming too big and too established to be accountable.

Fimbledore · 28/09/2024 05:38

I phoned them about a dog that was nearly always chained up outside. They said they wouldn't come out until it was 24 hours from death.

Anicecumberlandsausage · 28/09/2024 05:33

They put hugely emotional tv ads on during the day pleading for money yet they do bugger all.

A cat wandered into the tube station I was working at looking untidy but otherwise well. I rang the RSPCA who couldn't be less interested. I fed him and cleaned him up as best I could then rang the local vets. They said, bring him in, and we'll scan him to see if he's got an owner. I don't know the outcome but I just want to make the point that sometimes ringing anyone else first might be the better course of action.

unsync · 28/09/2024 05:16

This is nothing new. There have been rumblings about them for years.

Purplelimesoda · 28/09/2024 05:15

On the couple of times I have had need to contact the RSPCA they have been completely uninterested and no help and sadly for that reason I don't donate to them.

Paperdolly · 28/09/2024 05:07

I used to work for them. Turns out we were a franchise. Committee only turned up on open days or appeared when serious newsworthy cases came in and took the limelight from us workers who were there cleaning up every day of the year. It’s true that many people only know the cleaned up TV version. I have NEVER given money to them since the day I left.

Found an animal that had been run over but was still alive. Spent ages on hold to the rspca. They didn't have anyone to help. Told us basically to just leave the animal there to die. We found a volunteer from a local group who was able to come and collect the animal. Sadly it had to be put to sleep but at least it didn't die slowly and in agony.

The recorded message was annoying. It reminded me of the NHS. Kept saying that all their call handlers were dealing with real emergencies and basically
not to waste their time by calling them. Also if they can't help why don't they have a list of local volunteers you can call?

I read the same scenario yesterday on Facebook with a fox. They were not interested and by the time the rescue got there the poor fox had to be put to sleep. I see posts all the time saying “don’t bother with the rspca, they won’t do anything”

AdultChildQuestion · 27/09/2024 21:46

We called them about a horse lying in a frozen field. They said it was probably sleeping and refused to come out. Later that day we found out it had been dead.

This is just heartbreaking. That poor creature. I've never heard a good word about them; always on the adverts asking people to leave money in their will to them.

Thevelvelletes · 28/09/2024 03:06

Tusktusk · 27/09/2024 21:58

These stories are shocking. What do they actually do then?

Seems to be taken donations influenced by their plinky plonky sad music/solemn voiced daytime TV adverts.
