To ask about your opinion on the RSPCA after Brian May resignation

Meadowlands · 27/09/2024 21:36

He has resigned because the RSPCA's response to poor animal welfare was completely inadequate.
When I reported an animal in distress, they refused to investigate, and it was left to my local animal shelter -which is struggling for money - to come to the rescue.
I find it all extremely concerning. Does anyone else have any experiences?

I truly hope that a journalist picks up on this thread, I for one would be prepared to hand over the full details of my story. If the vet that committed the crime of cropping his dog's ears was investigated properly, evidence could be proved.

When the RSPCA officer went to the vet practice to see the vet, the practice manager backed up the vet's lies and told the RSPCA inspector that the dog in question had been imported with cropped ears and docked tail. Turns out she was the vet's secret affair, so of course she would back up his story.

I now send my donations to support animals to Fripps Farm, they rescue so many animals and do their absolute best to give them a happy life.

I was also going to mention Fripps Farm. Jodie Marsh does an amazing job yet she is hounded by trolls and I have often wondered if some are RSPCA staff. We have a local cat rescue that I support with food donations and they never turn anybody down. The RSPCA absolutely disgust me. They should be in investigated.

Beanzmeanz · 29/09/2024 10:26

I worked for their financial advisers they invested millions of £ and had millions more in their staff pension fund. Yet somehow they don’t have capacity to help any animals?

Thank you everyone for reporting your experiences. I am so disheartened to hear how so many suffering animals have been so badly let down by a charity that people give money to in good faith.

does anyone at the MoJ review their prosecution powers? Some of these stories are so awful that I don’t understand how they are allowed to hound vulnerable people through the courts

Oldraver · 28/09/2024 23:45

I once phoned as we had seen an injured muntjac

"What do you want us to do about it" was the reply

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 28/09/2024 23:42

Sounds like the 'low-hanging fruit' that PP mentioned upthread. An aggressive, threatening, violent man is allowed to get away with it, because they simply don't want the aggro; but a vulnerable little old lady who struggles to cope and needs compassion and help in rehoming an animal can have both barrels with no mercy.

XenoBitch · 28/09/2024 23:36

I know someone who was neglecting their dog. Dog was very poorly, and after family really pressured them to take the dog to vet, the vet was so concerned and wanted to admit the dog immediately for treatment. Owner refused, so the vet called the RSCPA. The RSPCA gave the owner vouchers to get the dog treated, with a time limit. After that, the dog would be seized. Sadly, in that time, the poor dog died (and owner binned the vouchers anyway).

This is very worrying ! The use of muzzles to prevent laminitis / over feeding is standard. Even if the RSPCA officer was unfamiliar with muzzles, a quick google when faced with the report would have been useful. Also would have saved all that ( costly) wasted time for all concerned.

Indeed it was at the time, the second time I had a visit the inspector was clearly just looking for something. Hence the muzzle apparently not allowing him access to water, not very impressed when I took it off and there was grass on the inside and a very obvious hole, put it back on and fed him a handful of hay through it. I'm not even sure I was actually reported a second time, I think they were chancing it.

I have a feeling had I not been so, shall we say, feisty and knowledgeable, then they'd have pushed harder, they did ask if I wanted to surrender him, which obviously I declined, in no uncertain terms.

I can certainly see how vulnerable people could be treated by them as pp have described, low hanging fruit.

What pissed me off the most was there were tethered ponies on common land very close by, overgrown feet, no shelter from bad weather or shade in hot weather, thin with poor coats, hammered around the streets in carts. But no intervention there. Despite reports.

No issues at all with being reported and then having an inspector visit and make sure all is well, nothing to hide and I think most reports that are made are from people that genuinely are concerned about the animal, even if it's misguided as it was in my case, I'd rather they visited people like me and found no issue, than other animals that are being neglected or abused go unreported. Unfortunately though it would seem that the RSPCA doesn't act when they should and gets heavy handed when they don't need to - as just about every poster has said, after prosecution and media worthy pics and sound bytes.

If they don't do anything, nothing would change if they ceased to exist?

Indeed.

FishBowlSwimmer · 28/09/2024 19:52

I once had a run in with the RSPCA, a beautiful feral cat adopted us. I contacted them and they told me to take it to my local vet. Easier said than done with a feral who won't come near you. We continued to feed it and a couple of weeks later it turned up with an abscess, back to the RSPCA who weren't at all interested until a neighbour reported us for neglect, then they came out. They managed to catch the cat but were totally hostile insisting that because we had fed it it was our cat, our neglect and threatened to prosecute us. I've never been so devastated in my life. I tried to help that cat and ended up getting threatened with prosecution for it. I will never donate to them again after that. The RSPB on the other hand came out straight away for a baby pigeon I found in the road.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 28/09/2024 19:46

The RSPCA are a useless waste of money. One of my neighbours decided to get a Shetland pony for their children and keep it in their garden (average size garden for a terraced house in the uk) of course it took 48hrs for him to turn the small amount of grass into a mud pit so they put a chain around his neck and tied him up in their front garden, he was jumped on constantly by children, no shelter, and looked miserable. The RSPCA refused to even come and look because he had a bucket of water and hay.

After watching him stood outside during a particularly bad storm I went and offered them £100 for him and took him to live with my horse. 3 weeks later the RSPCA knocked on my door because they had finally come out to see him and been told he belonged to me. By that point he had been seen by the farrier because his poor hooves were so long they were turned up and had a full vet check up. He lived a very happy life with us for the next 12yrs but ill never forgive the RSPCA for not rescuing him.

PipOfMeep · 28/09/2024 19:25

I called to report a guy beating his dog with a chain lead whilst screaming that it was a cunt and chasing the poor thing. It happened in public, in broad daylight, on a main road. I caught it on camera, found out the guys name, basically did everything for them.
They didn't want the video and later phoned to say they had visited him and were taking no further action because there were "circumstances that led to his behaviour".
This same guy, having been visited by the RSPCA, tried tracking me down and was outside on my street screaming my name and shouting abuse...
Poor fucking dog left with that psycho. All through the beating he kept trying to approach his owner only to have to dodge a chain being swung at him. The yelps every time he got hit were horrible😭

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 28/09/2024 19:04

These stories are absolutely appalling.

wrongthinker · 28/09/2024 19:02

I also had a bad experience with them refusing to help a sick and abandoned cat. I ended up taking care of him and finding him a shelter.

Good for Brian May. I think since they're a Royal Society, the government should step in and dissolve the organisation.

I had several ferrets. That was a good few years ago.

I have to agree with this. Myself, and a number of neighbours, and quite a number of people I've known over the last 25 years or so have reported different things, (animals in distress, animals left alone, animals struggling, animals suffering,) all to the R. S. P. C. A - and they've done absolutely nothing about any of them.

As you said, unless the camera is on them - rescuing a kitten out of a drain or something - they don't do anything, and they don't want to know. I don't see the point of them, really. All they want to do is prosecute people, and shame people. Some people deserve it, but some do not.

I remember a neighbour of mine some years ago. She was in her early 60s and she was disabled - poor mobility - and she was struggling after her young adult son had got a guinea pig and had left home suddenly, and left the guinea pig with her.

It was difficult to look after (for her) and ended up getting a little bit messy - and his cage was not being cleaned properly. Someone reported it to the RSPCA and instead of trying to help and advise her, or saying 'look, this guinea pig is not being cared for properly. You clearly can't cope,' and taking it off her to give to someone else to look after, they went in all guns blazing, treated her like a monster, and decided to prosecute her.

She had to go to court, had a £1000 fine given to her, (which she had to agree to pay in instalments of £30 a month as she had very little money,) and she had a criminal record for animal neglect. It absolutely devastated her.

The story was in the newspapers and she was labelled being 'cruel to animals.' The papers embellished the story, and made her out to be an evil cow who had been plain cruel to this guinea pig, when all it was is that she was struggling to cope with him.. All that should have happened is he should have been taken off her. That's it.

She actually died about a year after the prosecution - and only in her early 60s. I'm pretty sure that the stress of this contributed towards it.

That happening, along with the fact they don't seem to give a shit 90% of the time when someone reports an animal in distress, has made me loathe and detest and despise the RSPCA with all my heart. They only turn up when there are glory points - or a prosecution in the pipeline.

Dd once had a friend who has mild learning difficulties

The back story is,apparently he was with his mum and she was driving her car and they crashed

Mum died and he was in hospital for ages

When he got out,he started collecting animals to fill the void in his life

Once he got to about 20 different pets, his stepmum stepped in and between dd,stepmum and myself,we got the animals down to a more manageable amount (we got them all into happy homes)-with a lot of support for him to cope-he was and the animals left where happy and well looked after

Enter these twats-they hammered on his door, swept in,claimed the pets he had
(about 3) where being badly abused, took them and took him to court

Cue the local papers making a big thing about how he's an animal abuser,'forgetting' to mention his difficulties, that the care was good enough but not perfect and he had a lot of support in place

(all where fed, walked, cleaned up after and loved, they seemed to base it on a dirty feeding bowl and the fact that the cat was old and a tiny bit underweight-i do mean a tiny bit but was otherwise healthy, shed been to the vets the week before and no concerns raised)

It ruined his life-he ended up leaving the area after trying to kill himself a few times and we've now lost touch with him

He was low hanging fruit-his issues meant he couldn't fully understand what they where accusing him of and that made him an easy target

They 'saved' 3 animals from fuck all abuse, got the glory and donations from the public and put those animals put to sleep within a few days (that bit was hidden from the public)

I really hope they crash and burn, they really are fuckers

The RSPCA are a shower of shit with overpaid execs. They do nothing unless there's a camera on them. They have more money than ever in their accounts and gullible well meaning people keep adding to it. I loathe them with all my heart.

They're a lot like the post office as well in terms of abusing prosecution powers. They take private prosecutions out against people who are just a bit useless, rather than cruelly neglectful.

I'd never donate to them.

No it wasn’t

MarkingBad · 28/09/2024 16:58

I haven't read the whole thread so apologies if this has been mentioned before.

After a CEO at RSPCA whose name I have forgotten was appointed about 20 years ago it very quickly went downhill. A couple of vets I know have said RSPCA do not come out unless there is money or publicity to be had or a smaller animal charity to be pushed out of business.

Around the time of the change in CEO there were news reports about RSPCA having vets who were incentivised to report any slight matter which they then looked into to take to court. Private Eye and other papers ran with these stories for quite some time.

Also I worked in farming and the Red Tractor label has for years been known in agriculture to not be the sign of quality RSPCA and supermarkets hope to convey. The farms aren't inspected often or thoroughly enough, the officers not well trained in farm animal welfare and well it's not something they give away for free, based on invoiced sales, so farmwashing goes on in a lot of these certification and awards. It is about time it was all cleaned up properly and regulated better.

I used to work for a large charity (not animal related). I will never donate to any big charity.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 28/09/2024 16:48

Wow. Had a 'couldn't care less' experience with them years ago but didn't realise they were this awful.

Do they only recruit narcissistic bullies? The stories of the threats to prosecute are shocking.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 28/09/2024 16:17

It is an organisation I hold in utter contempt and I refuse point blank to donate to it.
