To ask about your opinion on the RSPCA after Brian May resignation

Meadowlands · 27/09/2024 21:36

He has resigned because the RSPCA's response to poor animal welfare was completely inadequate.
When I reported an animal in distress, they refused to investigate, and it was left to my local animal shelter -which is struggling for money - to come to the rescue.
I find it all extremely concerning. Does anyone else have any experiences?

Only time I’ve called them was to a horse I passed in a field that looked in really poor shape, very underweight. Person I spoke to took exact directions and a lot of detail from me but I don’t know if it was followed up. It was in a city about 30 miles away.

Bruisername · 29/09/2024 20:05

I posted upthread a link from them that shows how they spend their money. 82% on animal welfare.

I wonder how much on

  • call centre staff trained to say ‘can’t help’
  • filtering through calls to find easy targets
  • putting down healthy animals
  • training their inspectors to be total arses
PollyPeachum · 29/09/2024 20:03

They are not underfunded they have money for several years running costs in the bank. As have the RNLI.
According to newspaper analysis.

RSPCA also turned us away when we called about an injured fox that was hanging around in our garden.

We were told to contact a local shelter, who despite being 100% volunteer run and significantly underfunded were very helpful.

Yes, we had a similar thing happen to us. A fox with cubs in our garden was obviously injured. What do they do with their money?

cornflakecrunchie · 29/09/2024 19:57

Waste of time. Won't ever support them, especially since I read of RSPCA staff creaming money off publicly raised funds. Good for Brian May.

MeridianB · 29/09/2024 19:52

Good for Brian - this will hit them where it hurts with bad publicity, I really hope they take a long hard look at themselves and their priorities now.

The few times I have called them they have been hopeless - takes ages to get through, then they are totally disinterested and suggest local shelter.

Withywoods · 29/09/2024 19:48

I've called them about horses that were clearly being neglected before. Absolutely no use whatsoever. I know lots of other people who have had the same experience. I haven't had to call them about a small animal so no idea what they're like with them, but horses seem to have to literally be at death's door for them to take any interest whatsoever. I have never known them to intervene before the situation is absolutely critical, and their standards for the level of care an owner should be providing to prevent them coming out are woefully inadequate. It makes me furious when I think of the needless suffering animals go through because the RSPCA seem to have some kind of bizarre policy against early intervention in cases of neglect.

pollymere · 29/09/2024 19:43

I just heard that locally they refused to help two dogs and a rabbit in distress. And then someone else said they'd been told to drown kittens!

PeepDeBeaul · 29/09/2024 19:19

Rescued a cat from them. It had a treatable underlying issue behind his eye infections that their vet claimed was made up by our vet. They said we could surrender the cat back but they wouldn't treat his condition as they disagreed he had it. This cat had 6 eye infections in 18 months. Well I've been with that vet years. We paid for the op. £1000 total Inc meds and check ups. Symptoms have never returned in 4 more years.

Also called them when our old neighbours but rat poison out in an open bowl. They hated our cats. RSPCA can't help unless an animal is sick and we can prove their poison did it

PaininthePreferbial · 29/09/2024 19:11

From so many of these stories it sounds like the training of their 'officers' must be more about intimidation and threatening people than doing anything to help animals. That makes them no better than fucking thugs.

We need one of these undercover Dispatches programmes or suchlike to bring the fuckers down.

SunflowerSeahorse · 29/09/2024 19:01

My Mum was always a dog person, would never have a pet cat. However, she was an animal lover and never wanted any animals to suffer.
We had a stray cat coming into our garden, very thin except for its obvious pregnancy. Mum put food out for her and removed ticks from her whilst she was eating. She put a box on its side, full of straw, in case the cat looked for shelter to give birth. And then she rang the RSPCA.
The man who arrived was rude, arrogant and accused Mum of owning the cat and not wanting it now it was pregnant. Mum - a fiery Cockney - lost her shit with him and marched him off the premises. We contacted a local cat rescue who came to collect the cat.
Mum would never donate a penny to them from that day onwards, and neither would I. I have supported small, independent rescue places and would encourage everyone else to do the same.

Lolalady · 29/09/2024 18:46

They are useless. Contacted them about 2 horses in a muddy field with no hay or drinking water, wearing tatty rugs that were waterlogged. Didn’t want to know. Horse Charity eventually rescued them

Alltheyearround · 29/09/2024 18:23

Friend reported 3 dogs at a property where an old man had had to go into hospital as an emergency. Reported several times, nothing done. Friend had to alert police in the end that he was going to break in in order to feed and water them and clear up any mess/let them out to pee etc.

RSPCA did bugger all. I have lost faith in them and only donate to local rescues now. Appears they have some issues with their farm quality mark as well.

I think they have lost the original reason, like Oxfam, there's a lot of money going in exec pockets and not enough spent on ground work.I don't doubt that there are some sincere people working for them but sadly too many bad experiences outweighing the good just now.

Shame on you RSPCA.

JenniferBooth · 29/09/2024 18:23

Cartwrightandson · 28/09/2024 06:59

Yes! Absolutely useless, their adverts/marketing/pr shows them as animal heros but they are terrible.

First time in 2012 reported a feral cat in the top part of a shed had given birth to 3 kittens, they didn't do anything until one of the kittens fell and smashed both back legs and had to be pts, the other cats were dealt with by a local cats protection charity. The cats were feral and we couldn't get near them without being attacked.

A few months ago, 2 horses were put into a child's play park, with no water, one horses eye was red/swollen/oozing and the horses could get out onto a main road. The police, rspca, local city and county council wouldn't do a thing. They all palmed off to someone else, rspca said the police, police said try council, council said try rspca.... absolutely useless!!

Yes i had the same buck passing too.

This is shocking. Is Blue Cross a worthwhile charity to donate too?

No. They are utter wankers.

my family member died. He left blue cross £50k and ask them to take care of his dog, who was the utter love of his life. blue Cross pocketed the cash and kept suggesting the dog should be put down,

apparantly at 9yo, she was too old to re home. No one would want her. Only families wanted dogs and she wasn’t known with kids (despite refusing to re home any animal to a house with kids).

they also claime the dogs frequent vet visits showed she had poor health. In reality, she was my family members true love. He had the money and the time, so if she had a slightest sniffle, he took her to the vet as money was no object

ill never forgive them, we had to re home her ourselves no they refused to have any input whatsoever.

The times we’ve tried to get them out at work and they just refuse . Then rung me back days later to try and get a subscription!

This though , this was shocking .

Anyone would think they were only after the money.

CUNTS!!!

ElizaJ74 · 29/09/2024 18:08

Any animal "charity" that can afford all those TV and media adverts isn't spending their money in the right way.
I used to work in a veterinary practice and we'd only ever contact them if all other avenues (ie. Local charities/shelters) couldn't help.
Called them re a cat in a barn with a broken leg and they said they couldn't help but they turned up at someone's door cos they'd been reported that their dog looked mangy - said dog was already receiving treatment.
I donate to locally run rescues who truly care about the plight of the animals.

FofB · 29/09/2024 18:07

Someone I know- their next door neighbour went away and left dog in the house with no food/water. Dog howling and scratching at the window. RSPCA wouldn't come.
In desperation, she posted the picture of the dog at the window and eventually enough people tagged in the RSPCA and they came out. Did nothing.

JenniferBooth · 29/09/2024 18:04

Maverickess · 27/09/2024 22:00

They've moved away from actual animal welfare to only going for those where they can secure a prosecution IMO or something that will be media worthy.

The knowledge isn't that good either tbh, I had dealings with them a few years ago over a laminitic pony who wore a muzzle when grazing, was under the vet and this was part of the management. I was reported more than once and I fully complied with them, access to the pony, vet reports etc. One officer didn't know what laminitis is and accused me of making it up when I explained too much sugar can cause a painful foot condition in some, especially native ponies. I mean it's a pretty basic condition that affects many horses and ponies, which if you're inspecting an animal for it's welfare, you should probably know about and understand the basics of the management of that condition. A muzzle being one of the most effective as it restricts intake, promotes trickle feeding and allows them to be in a field with the herd instead of inside all the time. Was advised by a vet with probably 10 years training, plus many years experience to muzzle the pony during the day and bring in at night for a balance between keeping the laminitis at bay and giving as normal life as possible. But apparently that wasn't good enough.

Another said that the pony didn't have access to water because of the muzzle - despite the hole in the bottom designed to allow trickle feeding and drinking being really quite evident.

I felt that they were seeking a removal and prosecution rather than genuinely being interested in the welfare of the pony tbh.

They didnt want to know about a snake that had gotten into our flat which was nothing to do with us and when we mentioned we had an elderly cat STILL couldnt care less but couldnt wait to interfere when someone reported our cat for being too skinny. She had a thyroid problem and was taken to the vet regularly. DH was able to produce a thick pile of medical records when an RSPCA inspector came round to our flat. DH told the vet what had happened and the vet said to tell the RSPCA to contact him and he would put them straight/ Re. your experience with them and laminitis .......our cat was wearing a grey plastic collar for a dermatological condition. Had to be renewed every three months and this inspector had no idea what it was Asked DH what the piece of plastic was for. 🙄

Pelsall116 · 29/09/2024 18:02

I used to donate to RSPCA but I cancelled my direct debit; various instances on our local facebook page of people asking for their help for an injured animal and they haven't wanted to know. It finally dawned on me that they are only interested in doing anything when there is a TV camera on site

StuckHurtDone · 29/09/2024 17:49

I will gladly give money to any animal charity EXCEPT the rspca. They are the worst. They spent millions of pounds on a new HQ that went unused for years…. All the while refusing to help the public if they had found an injured animal unless the person called them BEFORE they get to the vets! Having worked in veterinary for years- we used to have to get clients to hand the injured animal to us, and then get them to leave the building and call rspca and LIE to them to say they were on their way to us! They are a shambles

OldScribbler · 29/09/2024 17:47

AlwaysGinPlease · 27/09/2024 21:44

The RSPCA are a shower of shit with overpaid execs. They do nothing unless there's a camera on them. They have more money than ever in their accounts and gullible well meaning people keep adding to it. I loathe them with all my heart.

In this country it is easier for animal charities to raise money than children's. I think it is a bit of a jobs for the boys arena.

Meadowlands · 29/09/2024 12:25

The thing that really upsets me is that when the RSPCA refuse to help, it is left to the small animal charities - most of whom are struggling financially - to go to the rescue.
I believe the RSPCA annual income is over
£150, 000,000.

@ArnieandBob I agree! There are some vile people around making her life very difficult. I don't get it either. It's truly grim.

TheFormidableMrsC · 29/09/2024 10:35

I was also going to mention Fripps Farm. Jodie Marsh does an amazing job yet she is hounded by trolls and I have often wondered if some are RSPCA staff. We have a local cat rescue that I support with food donations and they never turn anybody down. The RSPCA absolutely disgust me. They should be in investigated.

I can never understand the hate for Jodie. I have followed her for years and she seems to have dedicated her life to helping abused and neglected animals. I can never see anything other than a true animal lover there.
