To feel slightly suspicious of dp

Hi, I'm looking to know would YOU be suspicious? I'm not really suspicious but maybe a bit slightly?

So, dp works for his dads business and has for the last 10 years. Dp doesn't start work until 9. Usually he would set an alarm for 8:30 which sounds really late but his workplace is a 2 minute drive from our home. And he's really easy going 🤣. His dad doesn't drive but a workmate would always collect him.

About a month ago dp started setting alarms at 6.45-7:15 getting up and leaving the house within 10 mins of those alarms. (Extremely early from before) I've been with dp 5 years he's never up that early for work.

He says it's because he's starting to give his dad a lift to work every morning. His mum and dad live a 5 minute drive from our home. That's not too suspicious. But the thing that's making me go 🤨 is he's leaving home in the mornings in his normal clothes. He says he gets ready in his parents house just before he leaves for work as it's easier?

He has a specific work uniform. He would always get ready here before leaving.

So he's started leaving the house over an hour earlier than usual and not getting ready here?

Would you be suspicious?

I suggest there will be MN'ers reading this thread wondering what a Patek watch is.

Never heard of the brand.

They're actually really ugly watches.
Google them, I doubt you'll be impressed.

Devon23 · 04/10/2024 17:42

Huge red flag - been there sadly. You could get a tracker tile put it in his car - see the route? Shame you cant check with his parents - but yeah get your finances in order he's upto no good.

Lifeisbetterbythesea · 04/10/2024 16:38

Get off the thread please....haven't you got a watch or ego to go n polish 😃

Shade17 · 04/10/2024 08:02

Why wouldn’t you though? It’s a fairly cheap watch. My daily watch is worth many times that and I’d chuck it on to do the school run, I don’t even get out of the car! It’s not in any way fancy or going to impress anyone so I don’t get why this guy would be trying to impress with his. If it were a nice Patek, maybe.

Would that be a large suv to go with the watch?

Lifeisbetterbythesea · 04/10/2024 16:20

As watches go it’s a cheap one, the point I was making was that it’s not going to impress anyone. It would be a funny thing to wear solely for that purpose. I’m not saying he can’t enjoy wearing it though, which is probably the reason he IS wearing it, just for the sheer fun of it. My most valuable watch is probably the most subtle, it’s one of the reasons I love it, no one gives it a second glance, I wear it purely for my own pleasure.

That's your life version. If you think that's cheap. My watch cost £65 and I thought that was expensive. Sometimes we need to change our frame of reference.

I love these posters. "A nice Patek, maybe". The sort that pop up to say they've some lovely Maje t shirts for the school run and recommend £70 Nordic sock brands.

😂😂😂

Sorry, I didn’t even mean to derail the thread but the point I was trying to get across is that maybe he’s just started wearing the watch more because he loves it and has decided that it’s better worn than not. I can’t see it being something that you’d use to try and impress someone, but then I don’t wear any watch to impress others so maybe my view is skewed.

You can certainly love a watch without it being based on price, I prefer my daily watch to some others I own which are worth considerably more.

I’m also just being factual when I describe it as a “cheap” watch. I’m not suggesting that it’s rubbish, just trying to put it into context, it like someone suggesting driving a Ford Focus to impress others.

have a look at that fancy watch it’s time to check your self.

What impresses you may not impress someone else.

your basing this on your own personal taste.
for me personally £400 is a hell of a lot of money to spend on a watch. And if my friend/ family member had one I’d be happy for them and point out how nice it is. They clearly will have worked hard to afford such a nice and expensive item. As the op said he is a welder and her a sahm.

when you go out somewhere nice you put on your nicest clothes, shoes etc. so makes sense he would put it on. for most anyway. But you seem to be piles of cash way above us peasants.

zileri · 04/10/2024 13:24

This thread has it all

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 04/10/2024 12:47

and my apologies to the Op @wwyt hopefully this ' discussion ' on watches now ends.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 04/10/2024 12:47

from Google, I'm sorry it's dollars instead of pounds, and the bold is Google too not me.

Is Patek more expensive than Rolex?

Price Points of Comparable High-End Watches

Basic watches, like the Patek Philippe Calatrava, can start at $20,000, while more complex models can reach over $100,000. In contrast, basic watches from brands such as Rolex or Omega typically begin around $5,000 to $10,000.

Stop digging! It may not be a hugely expensive watch (compared to yours) but it's not "cheap". A cheap watch is a twenty quid one from Argos (do you even know such things exist?! 😱)
You're not being factual, your posts are sneery (and not in the least not helpful!)

at the risk of further derailment you’re digging a hole here 😂 my DH had a nice sporty ford focus when we met and I was very impressed 😂 edited to add that if he’d been driving a Maserati I would have thought he was a wanker and he wouldn’t have stood a chance 😂

I know what a patek is

Curry paste?

@Shade17

What a horrible horrible nasty thing to say about ' his £400 watch that I bought him he loves it. '

YOU have no idea of this families financial circumstances !!!

I think the Op @wwyt is fairly young ( compared to me as I think I am just about old enough to legally be her grandmother ) and this watch was/is a present to her DP
and from what I have read the Op is a sah mother and the young man works hard in a dirty job which involves welding - how do you think you can comment on their disposable income ?!!!

I suggest there will be MN'ers reading this thread wondering what a Patek watch is.

If you have nothing nicer to say, go and give your ' advice ' and comments on some of the Style / shopping threads...

I know what a patek is. And I’m sorry to say @Shade17 i don’t get the big thrill! I’ve always thought them rather disappointing for the price. They have a clever marketing campaign. Maybe op wasn’t taken in by it!
