Labour PIP benefit cuts

Stickytoffeepudding6 · 25/09/2024 21:01

Can someone help me please?

I'm absolutely spiraling. I've just read up about the Labour conference and everything about PIP reforms.

I'm absolutely panicking. I feel like giving up. I'm on PIP with mental health.

I do work. Part time.

I doubt there'd be much on this if the threshold was high enough.

As for 'buying the pensioner vote' expect the same sympathy if Labour really do go for benefits

Tories went for benefits all the time. Getting rid of the UC uplift being one issue. No moaning and wailing in the DM then. Funny that.
Let’s hope that if the Tories ever win another election they’ll reinstate/increase all benefits to a decent level. Invest in public services. Level up. And we’ll hold them to it immediately.

ByMerryKoala · 26/09/2024 14:38

Well, I'm not whing, entitled or a pensioner but I have a sense of fairness that this policy offends. It offended the Labour party too until they were in striking distance of governance.

Whatever the threshold was - and it is too low - there'd be whining entitled pensioners moaning about something being taken away. I know a good few of them. Not one expression of concern for those near the threshold - just constant whinging about that payment being taken away from their money.

You can use this excuse if you want but it doesn't divert from the reality for many pensioners.

If you do keep this and expect sympathy for benefit cuts you may find the same level you are offering now for poor pensioners coming back to you.

What is wrong is that the threshold is too low.

Yes, but this is a known known. This isn't an accident, the outcome of this low threshold is understood to be risky and dangerous - and they are wedded to it anyway.

Yes, they bought the pensioner vote for years. There's no reason why financially comfortable pensioners should receive a universal winter fuel payment. What is wrong is that the threshold is too low.

I never thought I’d say it though, but the tories never tried to take a couple of hundred quid off of pensioners. In fact they gave it to them.

I assume as it’s Labour and reform voters that brought this shit show about.

time for a change. Enjoy.

Oh. I see you think it's funny as well. Since the focus is on ESA and supporting those who need help and treatment to access work I doubt if those receiving PIP need to worry but it doesn't say anything good about you or that poster that you find their concerns amusing.

I think that at least when the Tories were in power, there was a good amount of scrutiny when they had the boot out for the vulnerable.

But now the same shit is delivered by Reeves, well then all of a sudden those same robust voices apparently all know a millionaire pensioner who blew the WFA on fripperies anyway and their pip claiming neighbour is swinging the lead.

I'm not sure if it's cowardice or pure cognitive dissonance to not acknowledge the about turn after years of finger wagging at the Tories for being heartless bastards only to find that the new lot are the same as the last lot.

So true. So if you find that you are on basic benefits and Labour cut anything don't rely on Labour stalwarts doing much other than applaud

It was the same on the state access to bank accounts thread. I get why people feel targeted.

Pip is not an out of work benefit, it is financial help so you can maintain your independence - including working if you can

And both would be of no use to my dd who needs specialised therapy. Also if they’re under the CMHT and on endless wait lists how are they going to whip out therapy elsewhere. There is a shortage of professionals doing it.

I agree, it’s ridiculous and mean. The government want to cut the cost of the benefit bill as it’s growing.I just hope they do this in a way that doesn’t massively impact disabled people but let’s face it when have they ever made things better for them.
Let’s just see what happens but what ever the government do someone will suffer.

That’s they it’s a vote for dog shit or cat shit picking between labour and the tories. It’s all shit just which one do you think might smell a little nicer.

I suppose the unifying theme is that people take great pleasure in suggesting the poor have brought misfortune upon themselves.

Perhaps it is more satisfying than acknowledging that the poor are shafted from both sides?

Tangerinenets · 26/09/2024 13:48

PIP does need a reform. I know two people who receive pip and have no idea how. I also know a few that should be getting it and I can’t understand why they don’t.

ilovesooty · 26/09/2024 13:44

Whammyammy · 26/09/2024 11:18

🤣🤣🤣 I wonder how many people claiming PIP voted Labour.

What are you laughing at?

I presume they are thinking along the lines of how Brexit voters where called turkeys voting for Christmas.

The poorest will often vote labour and it’s labour wanting to take everything away. Turkeys and Christmas.

Ironically there was the same argument when people in poorer areas ,voted Conservative in 2019 ,people couldn't understand why they would

@LadyKenya

"
WFA is categorically not still being paid to those who need it most. It's just been removed from them with immediate effect. Have you ever heard of the boiling frog analogy? Yeah, that.

Let's just hope this winter is relatively mild and please support your local food bank. Lives will depend on it."

The ones that need it most will be on pension credit as they have the lowest income. So no, I don't agree with your post

As it's my words you quoted:

It is completely irrelevant whether you 'agree' or not. WFA has been taken from all pensioners who do not receive pension credit and that includes pensioners whose only income is the full state pension of £221 a week, a mere £3 above the pension credit limit. 1.6 million disabled pensioners have also had WFA taken from them. It is not up for debate that many, many vulnerable people who need WFA will be affected - it is incontrovertible fact. There's probably a reason no updated impact assessment has been released.

I know exactly what they were thinking and it's still in really poor taste to laugh at disabled people being worried about their income, however you try to justify it.

ByMerryKoala · 26/09/2024 12:09

I suppose we'll have to wait till the end of October to find out who the Labour Party believe to have the "broadest shoulders". Although we know it includes poor pensioners who are just outside the help of pension credit.

IveGotToGoToMeDads · 26/09/2024 11:59

Doesn't really affect me as I don't claim pip and something needs to be done because pip numbers are rising.
