Labour PIP benefit cuts

Stickytoffeepudding6 · 25/09/2024 21:01

Can someone help me please?

I'm absolutely spiraling. I've just read up about the Labour conference and everything about PIP reforms.

I'm absolutely panicking. I feel like giving up. I'm on PIP with mental health.

I do work. Part time.

The misinformation on this thread is shocking people really have no clue what pip is and how difficult it is to get and why it has the lowest fraud rate out of all the benefits by a significant amount. Uc fraud rate is over 12% and pip is 0.4 % as you need so much medical evidence there is absolutely no way of getting it without

IveGotToGoToMeDads · 26/09/2024 15:47

Where I live woman next door claims every benifit including pip, claims to have a bad back, every summer I see her carrying crates of budweiser. Been out of work all her life.
4 adults in other house, not one of them has ever worked, and are claming pip etc..., all got arms, all got legs, all got a brain refuse them. All go socialing down the pub and that and go on annual holidays.
Theres a woman further up the road, nowt wrong with her and never had a job in the 30 years i've known her, watches wide screen tv at night.
Another woman who has had 7 children, not a single one of them work Her children are 19-30 odd years old. Her 2 youngest sons are 19 and 21 never had a job claim all benifits.
If people can work then they should work, where is the pride sitting at home if your able.

Yes but it if a.person is in receipt of both PIP and UC ,the PIP can.have a positive affect on the UC award

Not for adults it doesn't. Apart from getting the 1 bedroom rate for housing if under 35. There's only extra money for LCWRA or LCW before April 2017.

No it can't their completely separate you can recieve lcwra without pip. Pip has nothing to do with uc

Why do you think that pip is £1600 per month? Enhanced pip for those with the worst disabilities is less than half that amount. Standard rate pip is much less than enhanced

Stop panicking. It may not affect you.

FWIW I worked in one place where one lady received £1600 pcm and spent it all on stuff that later had to be donated. Her disability qualified her, but her actual need was for a part time voluntary job as she was lonely for people, not stuff.

I then worked somewhere else where one man was in a wheelchair and couldn't tolerate any interaction or he would self harm until he bled. He absolutely doesn't need £1600 of the taxpayers money each month.

Hopefully people like this will be re means assessed. Along with those who receive that amount, never spend it and regularly get benefits cut off because it gets saved and they go over the threshold....

StayCalm2345 · 26/09/2024 15:33

@Staunchlystarling like I said, asset wealthy is not same as cash in the bank wealthy.
Whatever something may be worth, you can't access that immediately like cash in the bank.
Of course, one could argue that they should liquidate their assets but again you can't do that just like that... so, with the announcement of winter fuel allowance cut to actually not receiving a payment, I just think there is not enough time.

Differentstarts · 26/09/2024 15:31

IveGotToGoToMeDads · 26/09/2024 11:59

Doesn't really affect me as I don't claim pip and something needs to be done because pip numbers are rising.

Pip numbers are rising because the nhs is failing.

Well Labour are more interested in 'working people' and have a definition for that. Linked to unions

Pensioners can't strike and neither can people on benefits (well they can but not related to benefits solely), so be careful what you wish for.

Edited

Have they defined "working people" as "linked to unions"? I must have missed that. Do tell me where that's been stated. In any case almost anyone in employment can join a union.
I'm a pensioner who's still working self employed and part time. I don't think I have to be careful what I wish for, thank you.

I think they will just further tighten the criteria for getting PIP. It will be for the very worst affected people like the poster above with the heart issues. I doubt it will affect people already on it but going forward I think we will see changes.

Pip is already incredibly difficult to get

Differentstarts · 26/09/2024 15:23

Thevelvelletes · 25/09/2024 22:54

This has been done to death.for the most part benefit claiming is not an easy process and most people would give their eye teeth to have their health and work.
Some get pip/ADP Scotland and still work under Very difficult circumstances.

This I claim pip and work part time I use all my holidays on medical appointments. I have zero life outside of my part time job as I'm recovering from my shifts.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 26/09/2024 15:20

I’m on PIP and voted Labour. I’m marginally worried because that’s how I roll. I reckon I’d be more worried if the Tories had got back in seeing as it was them who started this unrest against ill and disabled people with their voucher scheme shit.

Differentstarts · 26/09/2024 15:18

Justwingingit2005 · 25/09/2024 22:35

I think there needs to be a reform on benefits.
Our neighbour claims mental health issues, and laughs about how much she gets and openly admits she has no mental health issues she just 'can't be bothered to work'.

Bullshit do you have any idea how hard pip is to get and how much evidence you need

Yes as if you’re 8 million of assets you’re clawing yer arse skint.

Essentially the government cannot cut any benefits because some vulnerable minority will lose out. They can’t cut taxes because the stretched middle class will moan, they can’t increase taxes on the very wealthy because they’ll up sticks and leave, they can’t make any changes to WFA because pensioners are all poor and vulnerable and heating their homes with a candle (despite 27% of pensioners being millionaires).
So how on earth are they supposed to rebuild the country ?

Leniriefenstahl · 26/09/2024 15:07

ChallahPlaiter · 26/09/2024 14:50

There’s no real evidence to suggest that raising taxes paid by wealthier people will cause an exodus. They don’t want to uproot their lives any more than anybody else.

What we’re seeing from the new government isn’t about raising revenue; it’s about rhetoric, laying out their stall. It’s about a centre right Labour government attempting to prove that they can replace the Tory party, using those of us who are ill, disabled or otherwise marginalised as evidence of their pro-business, anti socialist stance.
It’s extremely disappointing.

Most people seem to have given the Tories years before the penny dropped that they were essentially inept. Why after 3 months are people already disappointed with this government ? As usual it’s like bloody football. No sooner has one manager been sacked, the new one is almost immediately criticised on the basis of a few matches.
Absolute short termism and an inability to delay gratification. Unless of course you’re the Conservative Party who always have the benefit of the doubt.

TigerRag · 26/09/2024 15:03

Leniriefenstahl · 26/09/2024 14:39

Tories went for benefits all the time. Getting rid of the UC uplift being one issue. No moaning and wailing in the DM then. Funny that.
Let’s hope that if the Tories ever win another election they’ll reinstate/increase all benefits to a decent level. Invest in public services. Level up. And we’ll hold them to it immediately.

Edited

The UC uplift that those of us on legacy benefits weren't entitled to. There didn't seem to be as much uproar about that.

It went to court and we lost.

ByMerryKoala · 26/09/2024 14:55

A bit of common sense would show that a more humane threshold for WFA would take all the anger out of this particular cut. It seems like such an unnecessary mis-step.

seedsandseeds · 26/09/2024 14:50

Ugh these threads always bring out the best.

They always know someone who apparently is taking advantage of the benefits system for disabled whilst forgetting that the majority who receive benefits do work (not that pip has any relevance to working.)

Try not to worry OP. I get PIP. I'm just ignoring it all until I see an official policy announcement.

Not only do they always know somebody who’s taking advantage of the benefits system but that person is apparently happy to shout about it in great detail for all the world to hear.

I’ve never encountered this; it’s like a parallel universe.

Exactly. ETA the only people they didn't target were pensioners because they thought that's where their core vote was.
