To think that feminist discussions on AIBU get shut down as soon as women don't sit down, shut up and be kind?

I have seen several discussions the last few days be shut down, or even whole sale removed, as soon as women get a bit too big for their boots and start having opinions on things bigger than flower arranging or what to make DH for dinner.

I've not seen any of those discussions verge into illegal, defamatory or even offensive - just women give clear red lines about what is and is not acceptable to them.

What is the criteria? Given the lack of democratic discussion spaces (they all prioritise men) it would be nice to have more space to discuss this without being hived off to the Feminism section?

They probably stand out because they are one of the few who aren't utterly wearied by the bullying that goes on if you don't share the idea that transwomen (in particular) are an existential threat.

TheKeatingFive · 26/09/2024 09:00

I have trans friends and I couldn't care less if a trans woman was waiting for the loo with me in Starbucks. I understand some women find this threatening and I'm glad they have a place to discuss their fears, but I do not share them.

Well I'm glad you realise that you dont speak for all women.

Yet in the thread linked above, we were discussing the nurses in Darlington who have no single sex space to change and are being forced to share with a fully intact man. They're being threatened with disciplinary action if they do anything except put up and shut up. They're being called bigots for objecting.

Yet you think it's the people calling this out as wrong who are the problem? Seriously? You could not make this shit up.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/09/2024 09:00

You can set your watch by it @SpookyX

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 26/09/2024 08:58

Having a place to discuss your fears doesn't solve the problem though, does it?

What they need is safe spaces to pee, get changed and receive rape crisis support, without being monstered for not wanting penises in those spaces.

Did I mention rape crisis support?

No, I did not - and that's a perfect example of the frothing twisting of words.

SpookyX · 26/09/2024 08:59

@MissScarletInTheBallroom I meant I called it, by saying he'd appear shortly to mansplain at us all.

Kiuyni · 26/09/2024 08:52

The trans posts are all awful because if you mention that you don't have an issue, or god forbid you have a trans child or friend and you are OK with that, you are immediately pounced on and lectured as if you are a naughty child, everything you say is twisted and picked over.

The sad thing is that some of these posters have really convinced themselves that they aren't anti trans, just pro women, when the posts drip with bile.

@MissScarletInTheBallroom - SpookyX meant she'd called 'Dadjokes appearing in 3...2...1...'Grin

Ahhh. That makes much more sense.

Called it.

DadJoke didn't call anything. He spends his days on this site lecturing women who think we should be able to have a word for ourselves and some single sex spaces and making out that we are exclusionary bigots. Naturally he gets pretty short shrift from most posters on Mumsnet.

Feminist posts are not the same as goady anti trans posts.

What's an anti trans post? Any examples you can share with us?

Helleofabore · 26/09/2024 08:38

MNHQ still, at times, moves threads about the impacts of prioritising gender over sex to the feminism board. This is much rarer these days. However, it is very obvious that some people will report the threads to get them moved.

Those who expect the threads to be moved, complain on the threads about how they, personally, don’t want to see these threads. It seems it is because they cannot scroll past a thread they don’t want to read and lack the impulse control to keep scrolling.

Errors · 26/09/2024 08:33

No, I do not think that these conversations get shut down on MN at all. And nor should they…

SensibleSigma · 26/09/2024 08:00

Well this is a nice positive conversation. OP gets anxious and outraged about important conversations being shut down, only to find that they aren’t.

At least, not all of them.

I do think the modding is about right at the moment, though it’s has swayed about a bit at times.

I like the 1000 post limit. It stops threads turning into "yes" "no" "yes" "no" for days and days, keeps the top of the site fresh, and forces a cooling off on heated topics.

I agree with this.

OK sure - tell me why you don't think the UK leads the world in digital engagement?

You tell me why we lead the world in accessible, usable, user focussed digital experiences?

It's easier to renew your passport now, or pay your taxes for example, because of people like me sweating blood to make it happen. And the best thing about it is that because we focus on quantitive data as well as qualitative interviews - we can prove it has gotten better.

I renewed my passport this year, was a farce and took 12 weeks to arrive... was it blood you were sweating or vodka?

I work in software, thats a bug, not a feature

I've been working in software since 1985 and say it's a feature, it's definitely not a bug. I'm very surprised anyone who works in software wouldn't have instantly noticed the 1000 replies in the browser or 1k post count on full threads on the app and twigged.Grin

Or, to be fair, anyone not in software!

Oh, and I've used MN since 2004 and the post limit has always been 1000.

Jux · 25/09/2024 19:33

Just to say, I find Gov sites appalling to use, just as a normal boring person. Trying to pay tax, or submit my return online is a nightmare, as is doing much else tbh. I'm not particularly incapable, and have used the internet for all sorts since the year dot (I'm 65 and was a programmer in one iterationof my life). I hate Gov sites with venom and ask why why why do they always seem to have the shittest user interface they possibly can. My bank's interface is not bad, any shopping interface is easy, information is easily got everywhere EXCEPT info from Gov. awful awful awful. Yes, I do do the bloody comments crap at the bottom of the page of gov.uk.
