We know all the anti Labour posts are really just about VAT on school fees!

Day in day out whining about Labour and looking for any reason to moan about Starmer, I’m honestly expecting to see a “Starmer ate my dog” post soon! 🙄

We all know you’re just upset as you’ll be charged VAT on little Arabella’s school fees!

So my AIBU…

YABU - It is not just the school fees, honest! I preferred ‘honest Boris’ and ‘man of the people’ Rishi. Or that lovely Liz, we were so much safer with them!

YANBU - The posts are so blatantly motivated by the VAT on school fees that it has becoming utterly boring. Jog on ‘disgusted of Hampstead’ and join the local comp!

😘

Its not just about the VAT that has people questioning them.

Here's a list of policies they have moved to implement so far:
Cut at least £3bn in departmental spendings
Cut Winter Fuel Payment
Criminalise puberty blocker usage indefinitely
Back Tory's anti-protest laws in court
Stop building the new hospitals
Stop railway upgrade plans
Crackdown on benefit fraud
Reduce sickness benefits claimants

If I showed you that list 12 months ago while saying the party in question was under scrutiny for excessive expenses claims and donations 99% of people would say it would be the tories I was talking about.

Awful

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 27/09/2024 08:50

Nope. I'm a state school educated state school teacher whose dc went to state school, I voted for Labour and I'm very unimpressed with freebie-gate.

Ash38792 · 27/09/2024 08:46

Ps your Arabella comment was pathetic inverted snobbery.

Ash38792 · 27/09/2024 08:46

Pro labour and Starmer - but anti VAT on school fees - so neither of your options.

Hoppinggreen · 26/09/2024 09:12

dottiehens · 25/09/2024 21:27

Did not you just said in another post that no way you would be paid for private school?

Absolutely not, you must have me confused with someone else.
My daughter went to Private school and my son is still there and I have no hesitation in saying that on MN or IRL.
So you are either wrong or have some sort of strange agenda by saying this

Surely they ought to have planned for their retirement? There must be very few pensioners in this situation that don’t have families that can help them out. I certainly would find my relatives in this situation.

Lucky you. We're clearly feckless wasters who should have been on 6 figures and planning from the age of 18 with a perfect support back up.
I honestly think some people walk around in their little privileged lalaland assuming everyone has the same opportunities and life chances.

Kiuyni · 26/09/2024 08:18

I'm moaning about Starmer but I prefer him to the last lot.

I don't have kids at school anymore and so the VAT rise doesn't affect me in the slightest

I hope they use the money to improve state schools like they said they would.

I think the influence of Waheed Ali is concerning and the 18million flat so Starmwrs dc could revise in peace is ludicrous.

bombastix · 26/09/2024 08:16

The clothing and glasses were ridiculous. It is of course nice to have to nice designer items. But previously Labour PMs were careful about their image because even if they were brandy and cigars in private the public image is beer, sandwiches and pipes. Modesty.

Even the Camerons knew that - Samantha Cameron wearing M&S to conference for that reason. Does she really wear that? Does she hell.

A Labour PM should avoid the impression that even his underpants are on a donor ticket. It’s not a new attack because the allegation of fat living is made against every PM. It is a markedly stupid episode and displays a lack of political nous.

"It smacks of moral self licensing, it’s fine when we do it because we are the good guys! I think the left suffers from this deeply, it’s ok for me to spit on someone and call them scum because I am GOOD and I am on the side of justice, if a tory does it it’s because they are BAD"

It's this entirely. When May floated the idea of restricting the WFA to the poorest pensioners in 2017 the Labour government was up in arms, saying that it would kill 4000 people. Apparently that's fine now. No, let's go further, it's actually a good and fair policy.

What amazes me is that the hypocrisy doesn't seem to even stick in their throat. And how the supporters would rather watch the winter excess deaths climb unnecessarily than express any shred of buyers remorse.

Do you think that they would have stood by, nodding approval for this, were it delivered from the other side of the house. Were they muttering disapprovingly at the shadow cabinet in 2017 when Labour were calling this move morally repugnant?

It is a bit early to come to a conclusion yet but the impression I am getting is that they very much do not think of the law of unintended consequences e.g with SEN kids and VAT on school fees, pensioners just over the Pension Credit limit and the WFA, legally accepting donations but not thinking of how it will play out with the public.

Whether this simply indicates a lack of experience in government or an inability to consider all the possible outcomes of any policies or actions I am not yet sure. I am hoping for the country's sake it is the former rather than the latter.

Yes but it only requires a tiny bit of thinking really, which they should be able to manage. Like you it worries me that they don’t think anything through, the budget should be….. interesting. Lets hope they just had a bumpy start and it improves.

User37482 · 26/09/2024 06:44

I just think it’s scutty having someone pay for your clothes and your wifes clothes when you are a millionaire. If he hadn’t been banging on about being the adult in the room and claiming that labour are moral and virtuous in comparison to the tories then I don’t think it would have been so bad for him. Angela Rayner as well who was happy to lay into Boris Johnson for the wallpaper thing (rightly so) came off as an utter hypocrite. Reeves has claimed thousands for heating her own home. I also think that removing the WFA from people who only have a sate pension is just cruel.

It smacks of moral self licensing, it’s fine when we do it because we are the good guys! I think the left suffers from this deeply, it’s ok for me to spit on someone and call them scum because I am GOOD and I am on the side of justice, if a tory does it it’s because they are BAD.

They just look like hypocrites. I’m not affected by the VAT thing at all. I also thought it was time for the conservatives to leave government.

Doowahdiddydiddydumtittydoo · 26/09/2024 03:29

There are people so rabidly supportive of their Labour tribe that, as far as they're concerned, Starmer could call a news conference in order to announce he enjoys drowning kittens and turning their meat into sausages and still be admired as the best thing going.

They'd be on here, claiming it's not a big deal, can't the poor overworked man be allowed to relieve his stress in peace. Besides, there are too many kittens about and he'd just been helping to keep the population under control. Also, drowning kittens sounds like so much fun and he has helped launch a multimillion pound industry selling kitten sausages which will boost tax revenues like the tories never did nor ever could.

This kind of tribal loyalty, where one can see nothing Dear Leader does as wrong, has historically lead to some very dark places.

Also, just because various tories are sleazy wankers doesn't obsolve Labour party members of sleaze when doing the same shitty things. If you claim to be better than XYZ, don't copy XYZ's behaviour as soon as the opportunity arises. Hypocrisy isn't a good look.

Nobody is under investigation for excessive expenses claims @Ijustdontcare , that’s just nonsense. People have got worked up because Labour have done something perfectly within the rules (even though I wish they hadn’t).
They can’t stop building hospitals that were fictional in the first place. There were no plans.

What irks me about the whole "accepting donations" thing is that Keir Starmer was all over Carrie Johnson's wallpaper being paid for by a donor (also within the rules), so you'd expect him to be a little more careful what gifts he accepted. It's not a good look.

jcyclops · 26/09/2024 00:02

On 19th July Starmer had an approval rating of +19%. On 20th September this had fallen to -26% - a massive fall of 45% and he now has a worse approval rating than Sunak. At this time, the best anybody can say about Starmer is that he still appears to be better than Johnson and that lettuce woman, but being the third worst PM this century is a huge disappointment.

57% of people think the new Labour government has not been a success. Even 32% of people who voted Labour think the government has not been a success.

TempestTost · 25/09/2024 23:38

That's a weird conclusion, OP, I am sure people have all kinds of different reasons for not being happy with Labour.

SoupDragon · 25/09/2024 22:50

No sign of the OP...?

Pissingintothewind · 25/09/2024 22:15

When the tories came in and removed child benefit from single income earners on 50k and kept it for joint income earners on 98k in 2010 no one gave a shit. The tories were grossly unfair and have been behaving appallingly for 14 years. I'm glad they're gone. I'm not a Labour voter but they're better than what we had before. It's high time we had a government that doesn't tax income. There are plenty of people who work bloody hard who will never have the money some people have. I know people who can afford to pay tuition fees for their kids at uni and people with multiple properties. I'm sick of the tories and their income tax grabs, which is a tax on productivity. I've got no skin in the game anymore. My kids are all practically adults but they'll never inherit much. They don't deserve to be penalised because they weren't born in to wealth. I will likely lose pension tax relief under this government but I'd still rather that than the skanky, vile con artists we had before. I say this as someone who did vote tory many years ago. Never again though.

Looks like it's time to look into going to the press where Mumsnet and its transphobic tendancies are concerned.

As predicted, and not for the first time, my reply gets deleted (defending trans people) yet the thinly veiled trans dig that I reported still stands.
I have lots of screenshots as evidence of this over the past god knows how many months, and I'm done.

Seems hate speech is just fine on here as long as trans people are on the receiving end.

Yup. But they'll dress it up as " concern" for women's rights.
Sadly the press are if anything worse.😑

@VeraYin did you have the press hovering around your personal home constantly or trying to take pictures of your family?

Politicians do events, photo ops and get loads of press that way. What even is this new thing about needing to take a pic of a politician leaving their front door. I haven't even seen any of that

Nice try to come on the defence of the new laughing stock of the U.K. About the VAT there is a case in court to challenge it on human rights it is so embarrassing for KS. Isn’t he a human rights advocate?

I have the feeling it is not just about VAT on private schools. People have given you more reasons. I would add that releasing thousands of prisoners early it is one that I am very concerned about. More problems on the streets, more homeless, potentially criminals roaming the streets in large numbers. Just what we need really.

Edited

It is not a bloody human right to have an expensive education. FGS could you be any more thick skinned and oblivious?
Beyond offensive in view of real human rights challenges worldwide...

Evilartsgrad · 25/09/2024 21:46

There are some disgruntled Labour voters who didn't listen to the campaign and imagined a socialist paradise, as well as the usual Tory suspects. Not all of whom have children at private school.

So how does that fit your theory?

Did not you just said in another post that no way you would be paid for private school?
