AIBU to not want to drop work colleague home most days?

Good evening everyone.

I just need some advice. I started my new job about a year ago and one of my colleague’s who lives in my area needs a lift back home at least 3/4 times a week. It’s not hassle for me because I have to go past her house to get to mine. However, at the end of the working day I’m in a rush to get home as I’ve got very young children who have activities after school etc. However, she always takes her time getting her stuff ready and talking to everyone before we leave. This ends up delaying me by 15/20 mins every time. I know it doesn’t seem like a long time but I have to rush home, get kids ready for their activities etc so that I can get them there on time, so for me 20 mins late makes a big difference. I do sometimes say that I need to leave bang on at a certain time, but she still delays it and is never ready on time. In a way I miss just being able to go home and not waiting for anyone. AIBU? I don’t want to ruin my working relationship with her!

Tell her you need to leave 20 minutes before you actually do. If she's still late stop the lifts.

spanieleyes22 · 03/10/2024 16:23

Can you give us an update OP what happened are you still giving her a lift!

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 02/10/2024 18:07

How are you getting on @Supermummy88 ?

Goodtogossip · 02/10/2024 16:40

At the end of the day have your stuff ready & say 'right I'm off now' & leave. If she wants a lift she'll leave with you. If she's chatting to everyone & doesn't leave with you, get in the car & go. Explain to her the next day you have places to be after work & have been late a few times in recent weeks so have to leave spot on 5pm or whatever time you finish. She'll start being ready to go once she realises you're not going to wait around for her.

mezlou84 · 29/09/2024 09:07

I sometimes get lifts as I don't drive but I make sure anyone giving me a lift isn't put out. I am ready before they are so soon as they need to leave we leave. She is incredibly rude to take so much time. I would say sorry I have to be gone by this time really sorry but if you aren't ready I will have to leave you here. Or just tell her because of the after school activities you can no longer take her home as you can't wait.

badgerpatrol · 28/09/2024 21:01

If an adult needlessly cost me 30mins every work day of my life I actually might be driven to murder.

Get your excuse tight, no wriggle room and for gods sake @Supermummy88 get this thread pulled because you are screwed if she sees this!

No,don't do this - you need to stop the lifts completely. Tell her due to the children's routine, you can no longer give lifts as they must come first.

They will stop. She’ll never be on time.
This woman is going to become a line manager - easier to manage things than create a rift. Her home is literally passed on OPs route home.

Just say ‘I’ll be pulling out of the car park at 5.35pm. If you’re there I’m happy to drop you home. If you’re not, I need to go, so I’ll see you tomorrow’. End of.

Don't prevaricate - just tell her - Just to let you know, as of next week the children's routine means I won't be able to give any lifts, so you need to make other arrangements, I'm sure you understand.

And if she has the cheek to ask for details, just say it's the children's routine and they must come first. Keep repeating.

Job done!

Xsxjxmx · 28/09/2024 08:53

Just seen the capping thing too, absolutely no! If you don't like it then she needs to respect that! That "steam" is full of chemicals
Tell her to please stop or walk!

Xsxjxmx · 28/09/2024 08:50

She'll soon be ready on time if you leave without her. An hour before you pack up straight up tell her, I'm leaving at X time, I can't wait about as my evenings are busy and I want to get back to my kids, so if you need a lift be ready to jump in the car at X time. Ten/five minutes before pack up announcement to get lol if she isn't then ready that's on her. Also have a talk with her on a work break and say you are happy to drop he while as that takes no time out of your evening, but her stopping for a chat goodbye with others is really stretching your time and causing you problems once you get home as you have then lost 15/20 minutes, please if she'd like a lift can she be ready to get out the door at X time. I'd she isn't then tell her youre going now if she wants to come and head out that door!

Mamabear487 · 28/09/2024 08:20

If your worried about feeling bad just say the activity times have got half hour early so you can’t take her!

MyspecialMug · 28/09/2024 08:18

No, she as able to get to and from work before you started.
You can't you've too much on in the evenings.
She's a CF.
After you say it, you'll feel relieved.
Just keep thinking of you driving home alone, in peace on time.

Supermummy88 · 24/09/2024 23:29

I’ve come to a stage where I miss being on my own in the car on my way home from work. I just want peace and quiet and don’t want to talk to anyone. She vapes in my car aswel, and when I told her to please open the window she said “it’s only steam, it’s not going to do anything to you’. I’m slightly cautious because she will be my new line manager in a few months.

Bloody hell! It’s your car do your rules! I would have stopped the car and told her to either get out or put away the vape and NEVER attempt to vape again in my car.

Candystore22 · 28/09/2024 08:10

Just tell her you need to leave at a certain time because of kid’s activities. Tell her it really inconveniences you when you have to wait past this time and you will no longer be doing that. If she wants a lift she needs to be at the car at x time and if she isn’t there you won’t be waiting for her from now on.

Londonrach1 · 28/09/2024 07:08

Total no to vaping in your car! Can't believe you allow that

Mugaloaf · 28/09/2024 07:02

She sounds incredibly rude an inconsiderate.

Be strong. 🤞🏾

If she's soon to be your line manager, I think it's definitely better to lay some rules now. Sounds like she'll walk all over you otherwise.

Good luck.

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 25/09/2024 13:04

If you're inventing an excuse, come with something cast iron or she'll resolve the 'problem' and you'll be back to square one.

Much better to actually tell the truth

martinisforeveryone · 27/09/2024 16:44

@LookItsMeAgain I'm just getting wound up by the idea of doing someone a good turn, repeatedly, and them thinking they can be disrespectful and top that by over ruling your preferences. Anyone with a semblance of thought or manners would be on time and not try to dictate terms, that's just very basic isn't it.

LookItsMeAgain · 27/09/2024 16:30

100% agreed @martinisforeveryone - I was just picking up on the comment that the OP repeated from her, saying that it wasn't harmful - no one yet knows what the damage from Vapes will be to the person.

Let us know how you get on@Supermummy88

martinisforeveryone · 27/09/2024 14:38

It doesn't matter if it's a vape that may be harmful, or the smell of a burger or cheesy wotsits, it's the OP's confined space and if she doesn't like it and says no, that should be respected by something being given a lift.

"As you will soon be my line manager, it is not appropriate that you accept lifts from me. I am uncomfortable with this as it places me in a difficult position." I'm not saying that would work, but it's worth a try if nothing else will. I think she sounds awful and I would be looking for a new job before she becomes your manager.

I got as far as this post and thought this is worth repeating - I'd use the fact that she is due to be your line manager in a very short space of time and a lot of business is perception. You wouldn't want to give the impression that some favouritism is happening here so as she is due to become your Line Manager, the lifts have to stop. It's not part of your job description to offer lifts to other colleagues and I'm guessing she hasn't contributed to petrol or anything else related to the wear and tear that your car is going through, right?

Earlier in the thread I would have said "I have to leave at 4.30 on the dot so if you're by the car at that stage you can get in. However, I won't be hanging around so I'll see you tomorrow or whenever if you're not there." Then leave at 4:30 as she was advised. Even if you see her in your rear view mirror running towards your car as you exit the car park (even funnier if she is doing this).

Now, I'd just put a complete, total and utter end to the lifts.
She has no knowledge of what second hand vape clouds can do to a person. No one does as they are a modern development to try to dissuade people from taking up smoking. There can be such a cloud from a vape that I'd be surprised if you could see through it if the windows of your car aren't wound down! Nope, not happening.

"Busymum" was the best advice for me.....Just tell her you are going on a different way from Monday.... ;) Have a good Weekend

@Supermummy88 Have you spoken to get yet, or enforced your new boundaries?
