to think it's fine to not want to date someone because of their job?

According to my friend I am unreasonable. Met a guy on online dating, he said he worked for the council. Didn't go into detail re what until the date. He then told me that he is one of those people that puts parking tickets on cars. Cue me very quickly deciding I don't want to date him.

Personally I think at first date stage you can afford to be picky and can choose not to date someone for whatever reason you want. I don't want to date someone who waits around for someone to go 11 mins over their parking time to shove a ticket on their car.

Friend thinks I'm being daft and 'it's just a job'.

There was a funny thread here a while ago, "Would you date a bin man," and by the end everyone was convinced they wanted one because of the job security, early finish and physical labour aspect.

I would date a traffic warden if everything else was good, but I'm also not looking for marriage/kids, that situation might be different.

LlynTegid · 24/09/2024 20:12

If it is not for you, just be polite about no further dates.

I would never date people in certain very risky jobs, nor anyone who worked for some organisations I have a real dislike to.

I have no problem with parking attendants. We have to have them because people are lazy self centred arseholes.

Agree with this

No problem whatsoever

Completelyjo · 24/09/2024 20:10

harrumphh · 24/09/2024 20:01

that's even worse, I don't want to date someone who's happy to get whatever is going.

You would rather date someone who was happy to let their moral pay the bills rather than someone who would take any job if it meant providing?

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/09/2024 20:08

XelaM · 24/09/2024 19:34

I'm so with you OP!!! Absolutely disgusting job 😖

It's a difficult and necessary job (because people are twats).

And having been a Council employee myself, it's also an incredibly dangerous job, where they are threatened a lot. Also by twats.

Completelyjo · 24/09/2024 20:06

Well she’s not wrong, it’s just a job. Ultimately you can decide not to date someone for any reason, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t a bit of a dick for thinking less of someone for their job.

FinallyMovingHouse · 24/09/2024 20:06

Serial killer - YANBU, traffic warden - YABU.

ObliviousCoalmine · 24/09/2024 20:05

I wouldn't date a traffic warden.

This.
Agree that anyone can say no to dating whoever they want.
But interested to know what hallowed jobs the OP and the 'that's disgusting job' posters do!

lionrose · 24/09/2024 20:04

I don't think there is anything wrong with it - there are quite a few jobs that would put me off but don't have any particular nos, nothing wrong if you do though!

Thought I am married to a wonderful man who is a police officer and that might put lots of people off but he's the best man ever so I'd give him a chance if you liked everything else!

Uricon2 · 24/09/2024 20:04

Two schoolfriends went on a weekend trip to Blackpool at 16 (it was a long time ago) Got chatting to a couple of lads in the pub (it was a long time ago) and asked what they did. First lad answered "maggot farmer"

Hard no.

I've yet to encounter a ticket inspector that wasn't fighting the urge to goose step up and down the pavement whilst looking to slap a ticket on a car, so no I wouldn't entertain the thought of dating one!

Because that is literally their job - and their performance is measured based on how much money they bring in. How would you be treated by your employer if you purposefully avoided doing your job?

BigFatLiar · 24/09/2024 20:02

SauviGone · 24/09/2024 19:52

Every single one I've encountered, whether they are married, in a relationship or single, has been a total sleaze. I've yet to come across the exception that proves the rule.

Edited

Including the female ones?

I don't think it's a disgusting job. It's one of those where it's necessary but feel it takes a certain person to do it. I couldn't morally live with myself sticking a fine on a car of someone who is 1 minute over the grace period, which has happened to a couple of my neighbours (one was 1 minute over. One two minutes. Both had parked in a 1 hour bay outside our house. One ran outside with a baby in her arms and boob almost hanging out and they proceeded to put the ticket on her car with her stood there crying) without feeling bad. As another poster stated, I believe we need the police but I wouldn't date a police officer.

How long is the grace period? Because if its 10 minutes then your neighbours were actually 11 and 12 minutes over their paid for time, not 1 or 2 minutes. The problem is when people see the grace period as an entitlement. And it shows why it doesn't matter if you give a grace period of 30 or 45 minutes you will always have people who take the piss and think rules don't apply to them.

harrumphh · 24/09/2024 20:01

Newsenmum · 24/09/2024 19:44

The only thing I’d say, is that most people don’t do it because they love it but because they need a job. I agree it’s very annoying, but I’d rather that then someone who works in something that damages children for example. It also depends on his attitude towards it. It might put me off too, so I get it. But if probably do one more date to check it all out.

that's even worse, I don't want to date someone who's happy to get whatever is going.

AmeliaEarache · 24/09/2024 20:00

You don’t owe an anyone a date. Ever.

I think your reason is pretty crappy, but it is none of my business.

Waterboatlass · 24/09/2024 19:59

@Terracata That sounds stressful for your friend but I don't see the moral point in this case or why they should have felt bad, it wasn't an emergency, she just timed it wrong and had had the grace period over what she'd paid. If people are counting a grace period as the actual end point that's not really the parking guy being harsh

OP you don't owe anyone a second date. Just decline politely if asked.

ScottBakula · 24/09/2024 19:58

As pp have said you can choose who to date / not date .
Personally I like traffic wardens a road near has double yellow lines on both sides because its narrow but the amount of people think its ok because they are only going to the shop / post office/ cake shop / bookies and will 'only be a minute ' but they completely block the road meaning cars have to divert half a mile in the wrong direction to get round them.

The only jobs I can really understand people not liking is if your a veggie/ vegan not wanting to date a butcher or someone that has a allergy dating someone that works with the cause.

Beezknees · 24/09/2024 19:58

YANBU, you can choose not to date someone for whatever reason you want.

I wouldn't care if somebody didn't want to date me because of my job, any more than I wouldn't care if someone didn't want to date me because I'm fat or a single mum or because I have loads of tattoos. A preference is a preference.

Mayorq · 24/09/2024 19:57

OrdinaryMatilda · 24/09/2024 19:37

Why is it? If people didn't park like twats, they wouldn't get a ticket.

Actually disgusting jobs are defence lawyers for paedophiles and the like.

Hey, we're an important part of the justice system I'll have you know.

Someone's gotta defend them, may as well be me

ThatTealViewer · 24/09/2024 19:56

It’s fine to not want to date someone for literally any reason. You do not owe anyone your time, energy or the company of your lady bits. If you decided that you only wanted to date bald snake charmers named Horace who baked excellent banana bread, that would be your right.

Silentfriend · 24/09/2024 19:54

You’re fine OP. I’d do the same. I also don’t date guys in certain roles and I don’t date guys in low level low-paid jobs. Don’t pay attention to the women here crying about it and don’t pay attention to your friend.

Silentfriend · 24/09/2024 19:53

DietrichandDiMaggio · 24/09/2024 19:50

What's your issue with PTs? I think that could be quite useful.

Most PTs shag their clients. Most women with PTs will tell you that.

A certain person? There are vindictive people in all walks of life.

Could argue your friends were 'certain people', if they knew it was an hour parking only, but couldn't be bothered to timekeep/thought the rules didn't apply?

Either way, you're absolutely fine in your decision not to date him again. Got to be happy. But the poster calling them disgusting was ridiculous.

So much for innocent until proven guilty. Why do you think people accused of a crime shouldn't have a lawyer? Wouldn't you want a lawyer if someone accused you of a horrific crime you didn't commit or would you say the accusation is so horrible you should be denied a defence?
