to think it's fine to not want to date someone because of their job?

According to my friend I am unreasonable. Met a guy on online dating, he said he worked for the council. Didn't go into detail re what until the date. He then told me that he is one of those people that puts parking tickets on cars. Cue me very quickly deciding I don't want to date him.

Personally I think at first date stage you can afford to be picky and can choose not to date someone for whatever reason you want. I don't want to date someone who waits around for someone to go 11 mins over their parking time to shove a ticket on their car.

Friend thinks I'm being daft and 'it's just a job'.

Because they give out tickets to hit targets and they often give out incorrectly and cause stress and upset as people have to get them cancelled.

Yes, this is my issue: when they give out as many tickets as they can to hit targets, regardless of whether they're justified or not.

I was talking to the manager of a shop the other day, who was parked outside the shop (pedestrianised area, plenty of room to get by) for three minutes, whilst she unloaded a car full of stock. The warden knows her car and that she works there - and could surely see the car crammed to the roof with products - but he still gave her a ticket. She had all the faff of appealing and was successful in getting it quashed, but it's just a huge waste of everybody's time - plus many vulnerable people would just pay up without appealing.

This is why so many people hate traffic wardens - not because of the ones who clamp down on blatant selfish arrogant people.

It wouldn't bother me, it's a job someone has to do. I think the public they deal with can be worse. I remember one time on holiday with my parents at the beach my dad parked over two spaces as you couldn't really see the lines for the sand. I warned him tho I said "dad you're parked over two spaces you're gonna get a fine" and he said "nah I won't". We came back later to a clamp on the wheel. My dad was furious and when he spoke to the warden about how much it was gonna cost to have it removed he said "I hope you get cancer" to the poor bloke.

Your dad was disgusting for acting like that; but I wonder what you're supposed to do when the space markings genuinely cannot be seen because of sand, snow or whatever.

Are they expecting you to get a spade to clear the sand/snow, so that you can (by trial and error) find where the space is? Or should you just not use the car parks at all?

NewMrsF · 29/09/2024 11:00

I wouldn’t date anyone with anything to do with the Army or a bailiff (doesn’t aline with my values), or a policeman or a Fireman (I have anxiety and couldn’t cope with the risk of their job).

but a traffic warden? It’s just a job.

Terracata · 24/09/2024 19:41

I don't think it's a disgusting job. It's one of those where it's necessary but feel it takes a certain person to do it. I couldn't morally live with myself sticking a fine on a car of someone who is 1 minute over the grace period, which has happened to a couple of my neighbours (one was 1 minute over. One two minutes. Both had parked in a 1 hour bay outside our house. One ran outside with a baby in her arms and boob almost hanging out and they proceeded to put the ticket on her car with her stood there crying) without feeling bad. As another poster stated, I believe we need the police but I wouldn't date a police officer.

At least they are working

JohnCravensNewsround · 29/09/2024 10:54

Well you do you obvs.
My observation is thar without traffic wardens there would be chaos.

Fathercrispness · 29/09/2024 10:49

Definitely fine to exclude him for whatever reason you like! I got chatting to someone on online dating years ago who had worked as a shop assistant for the last 4 years. I’m ambitious career-wise and just knew I wouldn’t be compatible with him. I told some friends and they thought I was being awful. The same friends that when I told them I’d been on a date with a Japanese man said that they would never date someone Japanese because he wouldn’t be tall enough!

Littlemisslaughalot · 29/09/2024 10:00

Would you date a police officer? It's the same thing. They are enforcing the law. He's only giving people tickets who park illegally, and it's for the council and not some seedy private rip off company.
It's fine to have your issues with stuff like this but you've just added another box to tick (must have job I approve of) as well I assume soh, nice looking, want same things in life, similar beliefs, etc etc. Good luck finding love 🤣🤣

I wouldn’t date a copper no. They have very high rates of domestic violence in their relationships.

CornishIrish · 29/09/2024 10:34

Flowerbuttonflower · 29/09/2024 10:32

It’s fine to date who you want. But I don’t care about traffic wardens because I always park correctly.
If you pay to park and don’t park illegally why would you care.

Because they give out tickets to hit targets and they often give out incorrectly and cause stress and upset as people have to get them cancelled.

CornishIrish · 29/09/2024 10:33

Have twice been given tickets for incorrect reasons and I think most wardens are proper little shitebags. If one was fit enough I might waive my principles but someone doing this job would give me the absolute ick.

#notalltrafficwardens 😆

TiredMummma · 29/09/2024 10:23

Hold on, you don't want to date someone who is cracking down on arrogant pricks who think they can make things more dangerous for kids, other drivers, pedestrians and cyclists by parking illegally? Or who think that they don't need to pay the £1.90 because they think they are better than that, even though it funds essential services?

Do you know where those (well deserved) fines go? To support maintaining the roads, to public transport? Taking the pressure of child and social care?

Absolutely choose who you date, but I think your choice is misdirected - not exactly a finance bro or an oil baron destroying the world is it?

Kidsrold · 29/09/2024 10:02

This is crazy. You know lawyers rotate so they have to take turns doing these type of cases- to have a functioning legal system everyone needs representation.

That is absolutely no true. There is no 'rotation', a lawyer can refuse any client for any reason. Of course everyone has the right to be represented, that also means though that any lawyer has the right to reject to represent that client. And, we also, in a fair society, have a right to reject dating a lawyer who would choose such a client.

Kidsrold · 29/09/2024 10:02

OrdinaryMatilda · 24/09/2024 19:37

Why is it? If people didn't park like twats, they wouldn't get a ticket.

Actually disgusting jobs are defence lawyers for paedophiles and the like.

I used to do that job but for the police . Nothing wrong with it . Get a grip

@Melonjuice As the OP said, these grubs charge for one minute over. And as she said, a woman with a baby in her arms and breast half out was running to the car and stood there crying as the maggot wrote the ticket. Anyone who does that to another human being is nothing but shit in the sewer. There is EVERYTHING wrong with it. These maggots should get a decent job instead of gleefully seeing a desperate mother with breast half out crying in the road.

I feel sorry for traffic wardens. A very tough job and not one somebody with other options usually chooses. I am in London and most wardens here are from ethnic minorities and they also have hideous racism directed at them.

I would not think less of someone for doing the job.

Spot on & 100% agree.
That said OP can date/not date whoever she likes for any reason she likes.

Although reversed, I’d not date someone who thought like that about people doing their job and working to earn a living. For me, it says more about OP that that’s her reason. OP owes nobody a relationship (of course!!). But I’d probably have kept my opinion of why I wouldn’t date him to myself as it isn’t pretty, is it?

CrochetForLife · 29/09/2024 09:58

Completely fine. A womans gotta have standards. Your friend is the one that is being unreasonable. Ask her if she would date someone who defends paedophiles in court. Or a used car salesman. I wouldn't ever date anyone involved in the military nor anyone who even showed an inkling of interest in the military or anything related to military/forces. Nor police officer. That doesn't make me bad or petty or fussy. Just someone who knows the type of people she doesn't want to associate with.

OP still hasn't said what her job is! Other than she works for a charity.

I'm still none the wiser. Is the OP telling us she's unemployed.and volunteers for a charity? It's not as if you earn big coins working for one either.

You can reject a potential mate for any reason you want. No reason to make a big song and dance over it though.

EveningSpread · 29/09/2024 09:01

Terracata · 24/09/2024 19:48

He's in his 40s and had been doing it for 6 years because he likes being outside. To be honest I never framed it like that just wasn't for me.

My DP is a postman for the same reason. He was turning 40 and between jobs when I met him. Jobs can be a good indication of someone’s character but circumstances and context are important. If I’d been rigid about career and status requirements I wouldn’t be with the wonderful, kind, caring, supportive equal partner he’s proved himself to be.

AlmondsAreGreat · 29/09/2024 09:00

Not unreasonable at all - you are perfectly entitled not to date someone based on anything at all, completely up to you.

Your view of parking wardens is odd though. Do you think parking should just be a free for all? And you do know they don’t make the parking rules? Would you not date a local councillor who sits on the committee that makes those rules?

Pherian · 29/09/2024 08:54

I think you’re fine to have whatever feelings you like. Out of curiosity though, did the date go well otherwise ?

Absolutely no problem at all. You can date whoever you do and don't like.
I'm similar (i haven't come across a parking warden yet), but I want to date someone that matches my level of education and has a career that isn't what I consider blue collar. I also have some professions that I stay immediately clear of, armed forces, police, anyone in law, and a few other that I know harbour an above average amount of narcissists. One of my main requirements from a partner is someone who can intellectually challenge me, and someone who can tell me about their day, their work issues, what they learn through work etc and me be able to do the same. I can't imagine Mr parking warden will come home and have engaging stories about his day.
The only caveat to this would be is if he is doing it temporarily for whatever reason and is looking for a different role.

Ita so good to have your boundaries in place on date 1. Each to their own and equally I wouldn't judge someone that would date this person as again, they might have a different set of boundaries, also fine.
But you know what yours are.
Good luck with the ongoing search x

TeaAndCakeFTW · 29/09/2024 07:59

Yanbu. On reading the title my immediate thought was that I wouldn't go out with a traffic warden, bailiff or police. 🤷‍♀️

Farr85 · 29/09/2024 07:43

Op whatever about the parking attendant. The first guy you dated and said was lovely but no spark perhaps you should try a 2nd date with him. Give the spark a chance to grow ...
