Wiping cooker when baby bathes

My sister just had a baby. My sister and I are only a year apart so very close. I’ve moved in for the first month into the spare bedroom. Just so I can help cook meals, walk the dog and keep things in order.

My sister is a bit of a neat freak. Ie she will need to do a quick vac and fold blankets etc before sitting down and watching telly. No problem. She doesn’t expect others to do anything so my family has always just ignored this anal retention side of her.

Anyway, sister has started insisting that whenever the baby is bathed (kitchen sink) we clean the range cooker which is on the same side. As it makes her feel gross and it’s cosier once cleaned. I think this is mental as her cooker is never THAT bad, mostly it’s just a bit of oil from a fried egg at breakfast.

Normally I would tell sister that she’s the only one bothered so she can crack on. But she’s had a difficult labour and pregnancy so it’s falling on me. I just want things to be nice for her also.

Im not crazy for finding this crazy, right?

Another one who wipes down the cooker after every use.

Do they have a bath? I always bathed my baby in the bathroom

A bath is easier to keep clean than the kitchen sink

If you read the thread (or even just the OP's posts) you will note that her sister is finding it hard to bend at the moment and finds the sink an easier (and thus safer) place to bathe her baby.
OP has reassured those concerned that the sink is clean (I'm sure both OP and her sister have considered this).
Also, I don't see why a bath is easier to keep clean than a sink. If either of them get scummy (grease, oily products) then you just clean them.

joolsella · 25/09/2024 10:50

And agree that you shouldn't just wipe the hob down after use..takes 2 mins

Hard to be a laid-back guest in a spotless home, but you're there out of love for your sister, so you might as well do things the way she likes. It'll be easier to wipe over the range while it's still warm rather than wait until it's cold and set.

Another voice in defence of baby bathing in the kitchen sink! Same floor as daytime living, ideal size, perfect height, surrounded by splash proof surfaces; just swivel the hot tap away or wrap a cloth around it. A quintessentially homey thing, like clothes drying on the line. For babies shallow basins are best; for quickly hosing down toddlers clarted in poo or mud or vomit, then a deep sink with pull-out spray nozzle is heaven.

Her house her rules...

Personally i wpuldnt want to be spraying chemicals next to the.baby

The only thing id be watching out for is if she has OCD or anything and that develops / worsens and becomes obsessive over the next few months.

Beyond that if it makes her happy its not a big deal.
I liked a tidy house with my first. It was something i could control / fix unlike my body / life etc which i felt were totally out of my control at the time?!?!

You don't need chemicals other than a small amount of washing up liquid if you wipe the hob straight after use. It's one of the advantages of doing it straight after use.

LifeIsNeverKind · 25/09/2024 07:42

If your sister's a neat freak, she probably finds the 'few splashes of oil' difficult to deal with, regardless of the baby being bathed.
It's only for a few weeks, suck it up and clean the hob. You're a lovely sister, by the way.

LottieMary · 25/09/2024 07:33

she sounds like she has a lovely home and wants to keep it that way. You and your family do sound very judgemental about her choices.

I would have more of a hygiene problem with washing a baby in a sink than I would seeing some cooking oil on a hob. People are weirdly inconsistent.

Edited

The sink can be cleaned between uses.

Given you can wash a knife/board that has been used for raw meat in a sink and then wash the sink, what 'hygiene problem' are you imagining that can't be dealt with by cleaning?

Agree with this.. kitchen sink not great for baby bathing

They're perfect, and millions (if not billions) of babies have been washed in sinks. How is it really different to a bath tub? Except it's Not too big, it's a good depth. Perfect height to stand at.

No need to use a separate plastic tub/bend over on knees/fill a huge tub for a tiny baby.

They don't fit in them long. There's really no issue.

Someone wanting to wipe something in their house is not 'mental' or 'crazy'.

Seems cruel to type out paragraphs about the woman's minor chores and calling her mental and crazy.

Agree.

She possibly feels a bit worried things could get away from her with new baby (they could!) and wants to keep on top of things (that's ok).

I think you should just wipe the range each day so she can enjoy doing the bathing.

And the kitchen sink is fine for baby bathing if it is clean - and this house sounds clean.

soberholic · 25/09/2024 07:24

Another vote for completely cleaning the hob after cooking. Even if I boil an egg I give it a quick wipe

BlackOrangeFrog · 25/09/2024 07:21

Nogaxeh · 24/09/2024 16:30

Wait. Why are you washing a baby in the kitchen sink?

Isn't anyone else thinking that it's incredibly rank to wash a baby in the same sink you'd be washing vegetables or dishes in?

It's a sink... And it gets cleaned.... It's not like your rinsing the veg with the baby water is it...?

Kitchen sinks are great for bathing babies when they're wee. I stayed at a holiday let with no bath, what does one do then?

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/09/2024 07:14

ReluctantSwimMum · 24/09/2024 22:15

Surely you can't clean a hob AND safely bathe a newborn baby at the same time? Is that what you're asking, OP?

I assumed the sister is bathing the baby and asked the OP to wipe the hob.

Bantai · 24/09/2024 22:12

OP, a hob that is wiped down every day after every meal takes seconds.
Its a mon job.
It is a part of keeping a clean kitchen.
Just do it for her.
You sound like great sisters to each other.

Toastghost · 24/09/2024 22:10

It’s not crazy. The cooker top takes a second if you’re used to doing it.

It’s nice of you to help though. I bet she loves having her sister there. I have a sister with the same age difference but she lives so far away.

Orangeoranges42 · 24/09/2024 22:00

soundsys · 24/09/2024 20:16

I think it's probably one of those things she'll look back on and laugh at how over the top she was, but - while she's in the thick of it - just wipe the blooming job. She's your sister and if it helps her feel better when she's still recovering from birth then why not?

Couldn’t agree more.

Shes perhaps being a bit much but it doesn’t really matter. It’s not that much of an ask to just go along with it.

I think it’s great you’re there to help and will make such a difference to her, lovely to hear of a good relationship and support network!xx

idrinkandknowthings · 24/09/2024 21:46

I was bathed in the kitchen sink. My son was bathed in the kitchen sink until he could sit up. It's only gross if you don't actually clean your kitchen sink. Which, my mother did and so did I.

Aposterhasnoname · 24/09/2024 21:42

Doesnt everyone wipe the hob down after every use? I can’t imagine leaving grease splashes on it all day, doubly so if it’s a beautiful new kitchen.

Elsewhere123 · 24/09/2024 21:39

You are a good sister to help her.

ThinWomansBrain · 24/09/2024 21:35

you're staying there to help - if it's not esp. dirty it's not that onerous to wipe it over - if you don't want to help, leave. Even if you think the task is bonkers, it gives your sister peace of mind.

Don’t end up being more hindrance than help.

all these saying yes to bathing the baby in the sink are the ones saying they don’t clean their hobs after each use so I doubt your sinks are clean either

Not true. Bathing baby in the sink is fine but I always clean my hob after use.
