Inspired by a recent thread, in which I read multiple posters saying you shouldn't wear mascara on your bottom lashes (which I have been doing for the last 30 years 😂) what has Mumsnet told or taught you you've been doing wrong?

The irritating thing is then I made one eye up as usual and made one up without mascara on the bottom lashes and DH preferred the without eye! Don't even get me started on my inability to make a chicken last a week...

No idea, but it did make me think of how:

On MN there's no need to check something before stating it as fact.

I mean the person you were quoting not you.

FatOaf · 25/09/2024 17:15

@PedantScorner - I wonder whether I posted that in the wrong chat. I wouldn't be surprised.

Bjorkdidit · 25/09/2024 15:23

I'm not desperately gagging to start ordering Christmas food in September.

Red Brick means it's a research uni, and many Russell group are part of that.

Warwick isn't a red-brick university but is in the Russell Group and has several world-leading research teams. Ditto Southampton. Reading is a red-brick university but isn't in the Russell Group, and also has world-leading research (especially in environmental and climate fields). Keele is neither red-brick nor Russell Group but has some of the world's leading research groups in musculoskeletal diseases and treatments and insect-borne parasitic diseases. All universities do research, although the proportion of academic staff who are active in research will vary, and the proportions doing world-class-rated research will vary even more. There aren't many universities that don't have at least some pockets of world-class reasearch. And that includes the former polytechnics that Mumsnetters believe exist to train mechanics.

To the poster FatOaf was quoting. Red brick and RG aren't interchangeable.

haha! This.

I am weird and odd for enjoying balmy summer evenings and sunlight.

Apparently, loads of people relish getting cold and sodden to the bone and sitting on soaking wet park benches whilst they are battered by wind and driving rain- it makes them feel ecstatic. Very odd however, that I never actually see people doing this in real life- funny that!

Also, that I actually open my curtains on sunny days and arent sitting in a permanently darkened room desperately praying for autumn/winter to arrive. 🙄

I think that most summer lovers don't post on mumsnet when the weather is nice because they are out enjoying the weather.

Like @Raveonette I love a wedding. I have never been to a "zilla" wedding. I also have no difficulty saying no to things or saying "I can't afford it/this is beyond my budget".

It isn't shameful to not be wealthy IMO.

On the higher education boards - Not every student wants to go to Oxbridge/top 10 university or wants to work in the City in a magic circle/big 4 firm.

LemonPeonies · 25/09/2024 10:55

That if you become friends with a man, as a woman, you are trying to break their family apart by having at least an emotional affair. If you believe regular sex with your partner is important, you are a misogynist. Stay at home mums spend more time doing life admin (ie. Normal daily activities that everyone needs to do), than mums who work full time and manage to do it all. That if you're unable to have children, people should never talk to you about their pregnancy/ children and should announce any pregnancy to you first, in person before anyone else and put your feelings above all others. If you have kids you shouldn't use parent parking spaces because someone else may need to park next to the door as they're in a rush. If you have a baby on board sticker it may distract other drivers so you deserve your car to be rammed. For a parenting site, a lot of posters views are very anti parent....

I keep my curtain closed due to migraines... the external natural light vs internal artificial lights cause havoc with my eye/brain perception.

That said I definitely prefer hot weather and the sun is FAR worse in winter when its lower in the sky and alternates between insanely bright glare and really dull cloudy 'twilight' quite sharply.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 25/09/2024 09:45

@marshmallowfinder I think it's one of those phrases that people like to say.
Like being 'blue lighted' to hospital.

Doublesidedstickytape · 25/09/2024 09:30

I have learned a lot about abusive relationships which has been useful when helping a family member.

I still don’t actually know what deep cleaning means tbh!

Yes I agree with all this shit about deep cleaning. How you can possibly clean 'deep' on a hard surface? The old term thorough cleaning was perfectly accurate!

I've learnt from Mumsnet that I'm weird for preferring warm sunshine to cold torrential rain. I've also learned that small children love nothing more than putting their puddle suits on and going for endless rainy walks, splashing in puddles for hours on end. This is evidenced by the totally deserted playgrounds, parks etc I see on wet days...

You know that's because their parents don't like the cold torrential rain, of course, don't you? The children are dressed in their puddle suits having a tantrum at home because Mummy and Daddy won't let them out to get drenched.

Doublesidedstickytape · 25/09/2024 07:10

I should never use my log burner (despite it being a defra approved one, and we have power cuts often which means it’s the only source of heating), because a neighbour 3 miles away will smell it even though she’s inside with the windows closed.
Our burner is completely carbon neutral- all the logs we burn are ours and we’ve planted in excess of 500 trees to replace the ones we’ve taken down.

I'm weird like you. Its been raining non stop for months and months now but if you dare mention how you wouldnt mind seeing a bit sun you instantly get berated by people who become giddy with apparent excitement at "splashing in puddles for hours" whilst the rain lashes down on them and the anticipation of putting a rain coat and 5 layers of thermals on practically makes them have an orgasm.

I know literally noone in real life who thinks like this

Sorry guys… I’m American everything wrong in the world is my fault 🙋

Just a few examples off the top of my head…

Halloween… yup totally American except that we’re also guilty of ripping it off from the Scots

Social Media… yup it’s all us (except for when it’s not)

Bridal/Baby Showers… clearly a covert CIA operation from the 70’s

Your children saying Santa Claus… I mean clearly not based in Dutch or anything … good ol’ USofA right there.

I could go on but then I’d just be another loudmouth American 😛

Don't forget gender reveal parties, invented by a Dutch woman.

You forgot your (almost) single-handed responsibility for the degeneration of the English language. Nothing but Americanisms or, if it's not those, <shudder> regional accents and dialects. Those non-RP speakers are really getting above themselves.

@saltinesandcoffeecups

ah yes, I went ' guising ' in the 60's.
and there were no ' tricks ' involved, I had to learn a little' party piece ' i.e, a song or a poem or something ' nice ' and in return I would be given a ' treat '

Bonjovispjs · 25/09/2024 00:17

That 'a lot' is two words, not one. I know I should have known this anyway, but I didn't, but I'm definitely not alone in this when I read other people's comments 🤣

I've been doing things when they need done, paying bills by direct debit and standing order, and making appointments when I need them. I didn't know that I was supposed to call it life admin, and make a big deal out of how time consuming and stressful it is

Might not be for you but is for some of us, phoning around plumbers for two hours with a burst pipe, or trying to cancel sky before they up your bill, realising your health insurance doesn’t cover something you can’t afford, trying to get an appointment for your child that you’ve been waiting for for two years … And some direct debits would be due before payday so we have to phone to pay. Not everyone is in the same position and it is ‘life admin’- I can say eg I’ve cleaning, spreadsheets, gardening, proofing, filing … why can’t I say life admin in relation to bills and appointments?

Agreed. DH and I share it prerty equally but it takes up a huge amount of both our time.
