Birthday money for class friends - how much?

Hi,

My son has his second class friend's birthday today. I put £20 in a card for the first one and wondering if £10 would suffice this time? He has another to go to in a couple of weeks and it's all starting to add up.

YABU - £10 is too little?
YANBU - £10 is ok for a primary school child!

Thanks!

Kids love getting money. I don't think it's souless. Mine loved being able to go and choose something to buy with their birthday money.

DaisyChain505 · 24/11/2024 16:42

Giving money is soulless. There are so many other gift options and they would work out cheaper than the money put in a card.

Usedtobeslummy · 24/11/2024 16:30

I prefer to buy a gift but if I give money I've done a fiver and a packet of sweets. Im in the South East.

Figgygal · 24/11/2024 16:19

I used to do gifts until 8/9 now I give £10 so they can get something they want/like and to avoid duplicates

Merrymess · 24/11/2024 16:18

A fiver is fine, No need to show off and give 20.

I think for 10 year old, anywhere from £30 - £60 would be appropriate.

What? Don't be ridiculous.

My dd was invite to a 6th birthday party from school which we accepted and I even mentioned the nut allergies on the rsvp. We then had to candle super last minute Saturday morning ( when the party was at 4pm) due to lack of sleep with a 7week old baby. My question is, is it appropriate to take the already bought toy into class on Monday for the child whose party we was due to attend? Thanks

Plusplus2 · 24/09/2024 09:50

£5 is enough

Fontainebleau007 · 24/09/2024 09:41

I always put £10 in

No wonder some kids are so entitled.

Did I say that the children themselves were asking for ££ or even expecting it? No. They were much happier with any old cheap plasticky present to unwrap for the novelty factor. Must be miserable being so bitter..

WTF? 20 quid?!

Edited

Similar to another poster, I was regularly giving £10 but at my son's 11th party over a year ago, everyone gave £20, and the same thing again when another son turned 10, so that seems normal for my area. But we don't have tons of parties per year and they're all nice kids and have strong friendships so I don't mind.

Hardly wtf worthy. Perfectly normal at DD’s school.

DS is that age and £10 is definitely the most common amount given, £15-£20 only from a best friend.

Mill3nnial · 23/09/2024 20:55

£10 perfect 👌

Mountainhowl · 23/09/2024 20:53

Primary we do gifts, like something physical to open. But since the end of primary I've done £15 in a card

😀

Could you do a gift voucher instead of cash? Maybe for a bookshop?

Button28384738 · 23/09/2024 20:08

At 10 years old £10 is plenty for a class friend. If it's more like a best friend then I would do £20 or £10 with some sweets to go with it

Viviennemary · 23/09/2024 19:59

I think £10 is absolutely fine.

ShillyShallySherbet · 23/09/2024 19:58

Someone I know selotapes the number of pounds coins of the birthday child’s age into the card which is a good idea I think. (Up to the age of 10 or 11!)

FlowertFlowers · 23/09/2024 19:58

Another vote for 5.

GigiAnnna · 23/09/2024 19:57

A fiver. If it's a best friend I'll spend up to £15 on a gift.

I think £10 is great!

Invisimamma · 23/09/2024 19:52

Last month I would've said £10 was absolutely fine. But it was my son's 10th birthday recently and most gave him £20, some gave £20 and a token gift!

I was shocked although grateful, I feel I might have been a thought to be a tight up until now and will need to up my giving!

However if it causes financial hardship don't do it, they'll just be pleased your son can attend.
