Not my parcel so why my problem?

Knock on my door 2 days ago and a man with a large parcel told me he was a resident of a nearby street. He said the parcel had been delivered to him in error.

As I wasn't expecting anything I checked the address and it was for a neighbour 2 doors away. I told the man it wasn't mine and he said he had tried numerous times to deliver it to neighbour and he was never in. He'd put a note through the door and no one had called him and he could no longer store the large parcel.

When I asked why he was knocking on my door he said I lived nearer so I should take it. Like a fool, I did. I think I was so gob smacked I didn't react sensibly.

I have also tried to deliver it and put a note through his letterbox - I do know neighbour by sight and he has been at home as car has come and gone.

I'm also fed up of large parcel in my hallway so I'm thinking of passing it onto another neighbour. What do you think? 😀

So cheeky ain't it! I have neighbours we don't get along with, constantly have their parcels sent to my address when they was at home. The driver from Evri would come and complain and even say himself they are home just not answering as he can hear someone inside. I said to his face yep they are in anytime you come and drop their parcels here 2 minutes later the girl knocks in her pyjamas! I think they have bailiffs or something as they never open their door but are home! I stopped taking them the last time the Evri man knocked I explained I will not take anymore, to which is was okay and understood! Neighbours are cheeky, and take the piss!

I dragged it round there at about 9pm and left it on his drive. The cardboard was soggy and ripped a bit.
I rang his bell and scarpered - a bit like knock down ginger.

I spent the rest of the evening peering outside from my top window to see if he took it in. It's not there this morning.

The thing is I genuinely feel guilty in case it's damaged. Although rationally I left 2 notes plus knocked numerous times. So I know not my fault but I'm hiding away in case he sees me.

Well done op. Brilliant 👏 It's his own fault if it's scratched. He had plenty of opportunities to get it from neighbour 1 and yourself. Don't ever take.in any more parcels for.them!

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/09/2024 14:13

Good. I wouid have left it there the first time I went and saw their car

WELL DONE OP! Why do you feel guilty about the condition of something HE plainly doesn't care about enough to come and collect it from you in SIX days (and however many more days the previous neighbour, who left it with you, had it)? This guy is a MONUMENTAL PISS-TAKER! You should post another note through his door saying "No, you're welcome, please don't mention it, it's fine I had to drag this over to you. Sarcasm: OFF" He's a CF and I wouldn't give his fecking parcel another thought (as pps have pointed, a sink isn't going to come to any harm from rain).

Is the neighbour’s parcel still blocking your hallway OP?

MermaidEyes · 24/09/2024 12:00

If it's heavy are there any friends or neighbours you can ask to help you move it to his drive?

I never take in parcels for neighbours anymore after some became cheeky fuckers and put our address as their default delivery address.

Growltiger22 · 24/09/2024 11:27

I would have told him to sling his hook.

AngelicKaty · 24/09/2024 09:52

Bumcake · 24/09/2024 09:49

Why haven’t you left it on his drive / doorstep?

Exactly this OP. You titled this thread "Not my parcel so why my problem?". Answer: it isn't. You've been patient long enough and he's an ignorant CF. LEAVE IT ON HIS DRIVE!

parcelwoes · 24/09/2024 09:39

No update really, didn't see his car yesterday. But I'm off work today so determined to get rid of it one way or another.

dont feel bad for leaving it outside in the rain op

AngelicKaty · 24/09/2024 05:47

Just to remind people, OP wrote: "I have also tried to deliver it and put a note through his letterbox - I do know neighbour by sight and he has been at home as car has come and gone." So, DESPITE OP putting a note through her neighbour's door and him coming and going regularly, he's not collected the parcel. He's a CF. Time to drag it over there and dump it on his drive while he's out. He won't miss it when he next comes home and can't park on his drive!

Moveoverdarlin · 24/09/2024 00:43

I would put up with someone else’s fucking sink in my hallway for about 35 minutes until I blew my top.

Put a note through his door saying Hi there, my name is Jane, I live at number 42, I have had your sink from SinksRus in my hallway for 3 days. Please can you collect asap. It’s too heavy for me.

Or go and SPEAK to him and say the same thing.

Take the kids! I’m guessing it’s not a long walk if you can see his car coming and going.

I can’t really see the problem here.

HanaLeigh · 23/09/2024 20:47

I would also go back to the courier or company who sold the item. Beyond a joke now.

OR

As with my STBEX, who wouldn't collect his stuff from our house…

Put it next to your dustbin, covered in a bin liner and leave a message with your neighbour telling him where his parcel us and what day/time the bin men come…😆

Worked in my case! 😆

She already tried ringing the company, one of @parcelwoes updates says so

I meant through SM/ their web form. Usually a lot quicker than waiting for a call to be picked up.

Lovefromjuliaxo · 23/09/2024 17:34

If you contact the original sender (their address will be on the parcel, should be easy to find out the company by googling the address) and explain the size of the thing, they will likely send out someone next day to pickup the item for return.

Lovefromjuliaxo · 23/09/2024 18:39

The neighbour has surely been informed it’s been delivered? Seems bizarre they’d just leave it for days (it’s an expensive item), so going to assume they’re still not in. Either that, or they’ve got a red card and gone to pick it up from the man who dropped it off, and HE’s not bothering to answer the door.

Could you knock on and ask if he is able to come and get it?

if you don’t want to/can’t dump it in his driveway/ he’s not answering I would honestly email or track down the website of the folk who the return address and contact their customer service/social media. They will arrange a collected return so you don’t have to do anything. I find approaching them on social media or their web forms will get a quicker reply than phoning.

For those saying take it or drag it round to neighbours- the thing is damn heavy and awkward. I don't t have time to ring company again or go to PO. I assumed he would come collect it so that's why I didn't rush over there when I saw his car and other times I've missed his car arriving and only seen it when it's left his driveway.
I work and have young children to get to school. I do enough bloody life admin of my own so I don't want to do the sodding neighbours. It's not for me to sort out (although it's me inconvenienced).

I moved it out onto my front path last night but then the rain hit and I felt guilty so dragged it back in again. So have parcel back in hallway but now a sopping wet, soggy cardboard one 😩

I'm going to sit by my window this evening and pounce as soon as he gets home.

NOW you tell us he has a drive! No need to wait for him to come home then. Drag it over there and place it on his empty drive - then he'll have to move the fecking thing to park when he gets home! (I'd also leave a big note on it saying "You're welcome!". )

Olika · 21/09/2024 16:20

I would hate having it on my hallway so when I see the neighbour's car home I would just leave it outside his door and ring his bell. If he then doesn't take it in (and gets stolen or wet) that's on him. I am not a post office.

I agree. It wouldn't be clogging up my hallway for any longer than a few hours.

You were doing so well until “I felt guilty”! Put a note through saying please collect by X time or it will be going out onto the end of my driveway and if it rains then so be it as the parcel will no longer be my responsibility.

Oh dear you really don’t help yourself! Why would you feel guilty? Also if it’s a sink, they’re kind of waterproof!

Are you a people pleaser?

Leave it on his doorstep!

This. Why on earth didn't you suggest that solution to the kind man who came to find the rightful owner of the parcel? Only on mumsnet do grown adults fail to use their power of speech.

Ginnnny · 23/09/2024 17:38

You shouldn’t have taken it!
since you know he’s been coming and going leave it on his doorstep
