Family member awarded enhanced pip - AIBU?

My family member has just been awarded enhanced pip in both living and mobility components.
Shes told me that she’s twisted the truth during the assessment and told the assessor that she has lots of pain and can’t really walk at all, but she walks all the time as I see her out and about - we live in a hilly area. I know people who are in a wheelchair and struggle to get enhanced rate - so I really don’t understand how she’s managed this.
I know people will say mind your own business but she’s told me she’s actually lied to them.

This quite upsetting;we're 14 months in from applying for PIP for my 17 year DD with a neurological disorder;on her worse days she can't physically move unaided yet not even to go to the toilet;she's been awarded 0 on everything.

We're still waiting for a tribunal date;it's been a demoralising and stressful process.

Where did you get that info from because previously there has been a lot of mandatory considerations that after quite a long time waiting and court they got passed so it’s not easy for everyone

Look at the pass rate…

In the quarter ending January 2024 there were:

  • 210,000 registrations and 210,000 clearances for new claims
  • 30,000 changes of circumstance reported and 32,000 cleared
  • 21,000 registrations and 21,000 clearances for DLA reassessments
  • 130,000 planned award reviews registered and 120,000 cleared
  • 71,000 mandatory reconsiderations (MRs) registered and 63,000 cleared

My mum has genuine mobility issues but is on lower rate PIP. I asked them about the possibility of assessing her for higher rate mobility but they said any further problems will be put down to her age (she’s 72) rather than a disability.

It’s galling if your friend has lied.

SpidersAreShitheads · 19/09/2024 16:54

OK, so apparently you can just ring them up and have an assessment where you chat absolute shit to a doctor/assessor with no actual proof whatsoever and you not only get awarded PIP, but you get awarded the enhanced level?

And the person is out walking up hills daily.

Sure, sure. That is DEFINITELY how it all works. You definitely don't need to provide any proof of your medical conditions so the assessor can determine how you're affected. Uh-huh.

4/10. Poor effort. Must try harder.

Never read such absolute horseshit in my life. Well, I have actually - on the numerous posts just like this which are posted to try and whip people up into a frenzy.

Really not funny for those of us personally affected by the public perception of those with a disability.

Women at work was laughing at her fathers answers to some disability claim he had made, can’t tie shoe laces, walk, stand, be alone etc, that she was copying on the company photocopier !

In reality, he was on holiday all the time, drove, picked up her kids and wasn’t the slightest bit frail.

It's hilarious how much mumsnetters 'know' about these awful common fraudsters who claim pip and uc and esa and everything else their 6 figure earning husbands tax goes on, isn't it?
They must have a side job filling in forms and attending assessments like I do pretty much 70% of my working week.

I mean, people barely have to say their name, and they get full points. I mean, everyone fiddles it. It's So Simple...

Daltonbear1 · 19/09/2024 16:59

@HappyChicky23 if that’s the case then you should be reporting her or you are part of the problem people can report to dwp any fraud and maybe more folks should

FineFlowyChiffon · 19/09/2024 16:58

HappyChicky23 · 19/09/2024 16:08

I have a friend who’s wife is the same, told them she can’t move, can hardly walk, she does have a wfh job very good pay, husband good pay and they now get enhanced pip as he is her supposed carer and she’s in the pits with all this pain lol lol but somehow she can manage to go to theme parks and in all the rides, holidays, jumping off boats, hot air balloon you name it!!!!!

She will appear in your local press in a few years, when they photograph her

Daltonbear1 · 19/09/2024 16:57

I am on pip and I didn’t lie but if she is lieing and you r not just putting this on here then bloody report her then. I honestly think just come on mumsnet whine for what for feeling good or gloating. Just do the right thing and report fraud and anyone else if they see people dancing etc and you think they have said they have a physical ailment bloody report, I am not sure what moaning on here will do. I know that I can’t walk furtger then a car parked at road outside my flat I need carers etc. now I use my pip towards paying for carers and towards mobility scooter I do think those that have disabilities that don’t actually need to pay for any extras really not sue why they have extra money apart from maybe it’s to cover if they cannot work

UncharteredWaters · 19/09/2024 16:54

I did a job a few years ago where I saw the medical evidence and the statement from the patient.

Over-egging it was incredibly common.

Because you can’t prove someone is exaggerating their symptoms unless they admit it.

You can exaggerate how much pain you’re in or you can exaggerate how much your mental health affects your life, but you’re not going to admit that you’re lying to the DWP are you? Hence zero fraud. People do admit they’re lying to others though, which is why some people know other people who are claiming under false pretences. Just like OP. And me. And other PPs.

Have you ever been present at a PIP assessment?

Solid answer.

So why does DWP estimate PIP fraud to be so low that it is recorded as 0%?

She did actually say to me. She’s told them she’s got ‘X’ but they don’t actually check with some illnesses as they can’t be Proven.

She's making it harder for people who deserve the pip. I'd report her.

Boomer55 · 19/09/2024 16:47

Orangecrocs · 19/09/2024 16:15

She hasn’t been asked for any clinical evidence from her doctor.

Not sure about this. Most claims require medical evidence from some sort of medics. 🤷‍♀️

Arran2024 · 19/09/2024 16:46

It is hugely difficult to get PIP. The idea you turn up and say you can't walk and they give it to you is laughable.

DejaTu · 19/09/2024 16:45

PandoraSox · 19/09/2024 16:37

Ciao.

Nobodywouldknow · 19/09/2024 16:33

Tbh it’s a pittance as are most benefits. You’d be better off getting a low pressure admin type job that you can do from home if you’re into getting money for doing not very much.

But it’s not means tested….you can work a still get pip….enhanced is about 750 every 4 weeks so not really a pitttance ….if you don’t work you are getting your UC on top of this

PandoraSox · 19/09/2024 16:41

SurpriseTwinPregnancy · 19/09/2024 16:38

It might not be much but it’s free money and you still get it even if you’re wealthy, paid NMW or somewhere in between. So in your example they would be better off by choosing to work and fraudulently claiming. It happens.

I know I’ll get lots of hate for what I’m saying and that I must hate disabled people. I don’t. I really, really don’t. I believe in a welfare system. I vote Labour. I believe genuinely disabled people should be fully supported. But I also know that there is PIP fraud and that needs to be addressed.

So why does DWP estimate PIP fraud to be so low that it is recorded as 0%?

Orangesandlemons77 · 19/09/2024 16:40

Arran2024 · 19/09/2024 16:37

How do you know? The dwp sent my daughter's GP a form which they had to fill in and send back. There was no need to involve my daughter- I only know about it because my daughter was turned down and when we appealed and asked for all the paperwork, we found out about the form.

I would also add that pip isn't just about physically being able to walk. My daughter can walk fine but she has epilepsy and a learning disability so she isn't able to go out on her own. My nephews get it and they have autism.

If the doctor has not been asked for evidence, she must have sent some in herself, they don't give it out without it

Orangesandlemons77 · 19/09/2024 16:39

Octavia64 · 19/09/2024 16:03

If she has actually lied then you should report her.

I am going through the process at the moment and they ask for access to your medical records and you are expected to supply a lot of medical evidence.

How far have you actually seen her walk?

You do know that the criteria is being able to do something reliably and repeatedly, not just as a one off?

Viviennemary · 19/09/2024 16:39

She is a chancer. The whole PIP thing is totally absurd and needs to be completely overhauled.

OhshutupBarry · 19/09/2024 16:38

DejaTu · 19/09/2024 16:36

What do you mean?

The individual has allegedly committed fraud. Are you OK with that?

Lol.
