Family member awarded enhanced pip - AIBU?

Orangecrocs · 19/09/2024 15:42

My family member has just been awarded enhanced pip in both living and mobility components.
Shes told me that she’s twisted the truth during the assessment and told the assessor that she has lots of pain and can’t really walk at all, but she walks all the time as I see her out and about - we live in a hilly area. I know people who are in a wheelchair and struggle to get enhanced rate - so I really don’t understand how she’s managed this.
I know people will say mind your own business but she’s told me she’s actually lied to them.

Report her. Making us all poorer.

Do you need cash for this? NO!

All these things can be paid for via bank transfer or debit card!!!!

Benefits bank account and a benefits debit card. All money can be accounted for and audited. No cash payments needed.

Here's a thread outlining exactly why cash is often preferable for older/disabled people. I doubt you'll bother reading it.

And god forbid someone might want to give their grandchild a tenner in a card for their birthday or anything.

This thread is absolutely vile.

As per usual when it comes to discussing disability benefits, or benefits in general.

maybe you should of read all the quoted posts 🤣🤣

I have. It’s bollocks. Unless you live with someone 24 hours a day, are intimately acquainted with their condition, have access to medical reports and are privy to the private details of their benefit claim, you can’t possibly know whether they qualify for benefit or not.

Most people on benefits aren't going to the bank and withdrawing huge sums of cash. Perhaps some are. But nothing like the inflated figures you seem to have in your head. Also not sure how it would reduce benefit fraud really. Certainly not like the type that is being suggested in this thread.

Also, cash is still widely used. In fact, I have to withdraw £150 tomorrow to pay for the hall and bouncy castle for my kids birthday party. Is that ok with you? Just thought I'd check seeing as I apparently have to justify all my spending to the taxpayers. Or is my child not allowed a birthday party either?

I believe all business should be cashless too.

My business is cashless and I do not accept cash payments and most of the people offering me cash payments are wait for it…….. on benefits! 😂 They actually tell me they are on benefits before you ask how I know.

That is just my experience.

What are you on about? Claimants don't have to do urine tests for neurological or any other condition.

As for neurological conditions being easy to fake? Yeah my DH rearranged his DNA to fake his hereditary neurological condition. And his brain scan.

Yes but if you don’t provide any evidence, you’ll be hard pushed to get PIP awarded even if you genuinely have significant care, health and support needs.

There is always medical evidence to support a PIP claim. Even if the claimant doesn’t provide it themselves, and even in the absence of a face to face assessment. DWP case managers who make award decisions are not medically qualified. There will always be an assessors report if the claimant does not provide evidence of their own. As a benefit adviser I would never have advised any claimant to rely on an assessment report - assessors are not doctors. They can variously be nurses, physios, paramedics, and not necessarily experienced in any one disability or condition. Independent medical evidence is always preferable.

PIP isn’t all about mobility or pain .. my daughter has ASD and gets in, she can walk fine

It is about mobility and pain if that’s what your issue is. There are communication and other issues that relate to autism.

This is why benefits paid into a benefit bank account with a benefits credit card and a limit on cash withdrawals is a good solution.

Accountability and audit is the key to cutting benefit fraud.

Physical cash is not needed anymore in this society and benefits will catch up.

Nope. What a fucking awful comment. The motability scheme is reserved for those who are awarded the enhanced rate mobility component of PIP because they have severe mobility problems. Christ people. Stop reading the Daily Fail, do a bit of research into the eligibility criteria for PIP and apply a bit of critical thinking before you post from sheer ignorance.

Do you actually know what the cost of disability is ?

How do you account for the extra household costs because you are disabled, confined to a wheelchair and live alone ?

Extra electricity costs because you need to charge essential equipment.
Extra gas and electricity costs because you’re never out of the shower or bath because of incontinence - not to mention the extra laundry.
Extra costs because you don’t qualify for LA help with care and have to buy it in.
Someone to put your bins out.
Someone to actually put your bin bags in the bin.
Someone to clean a couple of times a week - even if it’s only to do the things you can’t manage yourself.
Someone to mow the lawn/weed.
Someone to help you get out of the house, and if you’re lucky enough to have a car, into it and out of it at the other end.
Someone to help you bathe and change after accidents and cope with stomas - sometimes double stomas if you’re doubly incontinent.

Want me to go on ? You, and quite a few others here have no fucking idea what it’s like to live as a disabled person. And until you do, you really aren’t qualified to comment are you ?

I’m not a benefits basher but I’m a realist.
i work in mental health and honesty I am regularly struggling to identify what needs/ treatment someone may require and at the end they will mention they have. PIP review coming up. I took two call just last week from people who wanted a diagnosis as they said PIP had told them they needed one to progress their claim.
I have assessed people in the past who tell me they are severely agoraphobic and never go out then let slip and mention something thats happened on a recent holiday abroad!!
And the number of usually young men who come for assessment and disclose smoking £100 of cannabis a week who admit to using PIP to pay for it. Its madness.
So whilst I do believe the majority of claimants are genuine its certainly not 0% Im afraid!!

This. The amount of relation to cannabis and mental health is substantial. And it’s a awful situation where they’ve got mental health issues due to the drugs, get disability benefits for their mental health and use those benefits for those drugs - hence never being able to get out of the mental health state. I know of multiple people who claim they cannot work due to mental health, and I don’t doubt it’s mental health but they also smoke themselves silly and sleep all day and because they get benefits for the mental health aspect - they’re never going to want to actually get out of that cycle or ‘better’ themselves.

So people would just use that account for bills and food …..it would soon be spent every month…I mean that wouldn’t bother me in the slightest…..but as I said earlier on….who is going to audit these accounts ……will cost millions to set up and audit 3.4m accounts

talatala · 19/09/2024 18:23

I know of someone who was refused PIP who is very unwell and not mobile at all. I also know of a woman who has claimed it for years, she’s my next door neighbour. She was a social worker so knows how to play the system.

In reality, plenty of people are exaggerating symptoms, just like your family member

Do you have any evidence to back this up?

Yes, how peculiar that a random poster on mumsnet would have more insight into the realities of PIP claimants than a professionally commissioned report!

YOYOK · 19/09/2024 18:22

Kitkat1523 · 19/09/2024 18:18

JasmineTea11 · 19/09/2024 18:20

This government should definitely tackle this; they would get a lot of support from 'ordinary people' if they were brave enough to take it on.
They would get loads of grief off their Guardian reading voters (of which I'm one haha) though. The type who naively believe that only rich / privileged people are piss takers and all working class / disabled people are worthy, salt of the earth types.

Benefit claimants could have a benefit bank account and debit card and account for everything too

What happens if they're working, do they have their wages paid into their special benefits bank account? Or are they allowed to have a normal bank account for their wages?
If this would be to make sure that benefits aren't being used on things that 'waste' the taxpayers money, are there approved suppliers that must be used? Is there a comprehensive list of what benefits claimants can purchase, and what is considered frivolous/unnecessary?
How is their spending monitored? Who's monitoring it?

How much is all of this costing to run?

Such an old scam! People often fake neurological conditions because they are very easy to fake and very difficult to verity - I think they introduced compulsory urine tests only about 9 years ago, when the claimant claiming neurological disturbance has to demonstrate the presence of their particular medicine prescribed for the condition in the urine - but I don't know how they really properly check, etc.

Forgive me for raising it, but my Bulgarian ex SIL told me how she gamed the system to warrant a full NHS-funded check-up habitually denied to the taxpayer (even unheard of). She would go to a GP, complain of flank pain and GP predictably would give her a bottle to pee in, she would go to the surgery's toilet, pee in the bottle, then prick her finger and put a drop of blood in her urine. The GP would prescribe antibiotics to 'clear it', she would not take them, present again in a week's time and repeat the process - and be promptly referred for ultrasound tests, etc. etc. I thought to myself it was good that she only wanted a full check-up with this cheating, but if she was minded to fake some condition with hematuria as a symptom - what was to stop her?

Our system is not made for liars, it is made for honest people.

What are you on about? Claimants don't have to do urine tests for neurological or any other condition.

All benefits need to be accounted for. Not curtailed necessarily just accounted for.

I have to account for my business spending and my tax why should benefit claimants not have to account for themselves and their spending.
