To say that people in Sussex are awful?

Can't quite put my finger on what it is, but generally in Sussex when working or travelling there, whether in towns, coast or countryside, people do seem to have this awful, cold and arrogant demeanour about them that they are somehow something they aren't?

Just seem to look down their noses at anyone else and must say I don't think you see that as much even in London!

Must add as well, there do seem to be a rather large proportion of quite aggressive elderly ex-Londoners who almost come across as ex football hooligans?

AIBU or is there something I'm missing? anyone know anywhere else like this?🤔

I've been to Sussex many times and I've never experienced this!

121Diet · 22/09/2024 18:26

I have dumped an online friend from Sussex, cold and arrogant! 😂

and being religious is problematic why ?
I would have thought parts of Birmingham, Bradfrd and Leeds had far more people actively practicing a religion than any part of Sussex. Is it just Christianity which is difficult ?

its the shoving it down your throat that's difficult! its very clicky in the church sect.

Skipsurvey · 21/09/2024 17:52

oh i love bonfire societies , remembering the 17 protestant martyrs and guy fawkes

nOasistickets · 21/09/2024 17:50

What a ridiculous comment - how can you generalise the whole of Sussex? I’ve been around and met absolute fucking arseholes from everywhere. 🤨 - shock horror - even in (lovely) Cambridgeshire.

Boomer55 · 21/09/2024 17:45

I lived in Rye and Battle for a while, but went back to London as soon as I could. Too up themselves for me.🙄

And I’m not even going there with the Bonfyre Boys and their parades. Very Wicker Man.😂

St Mary's Bay, Dymchurch, Hythe and Canterbury are all in Kent so probably aren't full of truly awful people.

No, other than Canterbury, they are just grim. 🤷‍♀️

Where I'm from doesn't matter! Not from there, and although there is an unfriendly 'snooty south' stereotype in the UK, a lot of people there seem very unfriendly or have a very 'fake friendly' demeanour

How can everyone in a county be the same?

We're not all the same down my road!

LoobyDoop2 · 21/09/2024 15:50

I can tell you with absolute certainty that none of them are anywhere near as awful and despicable as the horrible cunt who has been using a leaf blower ALL AFTERNOON in South Manchester, on what is probably the last beautiful day (one of the very few, in fact) this year. If I thought I’d get away with chopping him up and blowing the bits of his body all over the road with his stupid power tools, I would.

The main religion I'd say popularly associated with Sussex is Scientology.

The other thing it's known for is sectarianism, compared to other bits of England anyway

You realise this isn't a serious thread.

And be careful leaving or going pass any tube station in London. Lots seem to attract a guy who likes preaching - religion of the guy varies.

I wonder which bit you’re in @whatistheworld. There are definitely a few Brexity pensioners about but I assume they exist everywhere since Brexit voters were in the majority! I know hardly any religious people here though (and those I do know are elderly, which- again- is probably the pattern nationally).

They are young, and families with children and old pensioners, our street empties on a sunday morning!
We are also fairly close to the Scientologist centre, the morman temple and all the lay lines that meet in East Grinstead.
I have never experienced it any where else.

I think she's in the car now on her way....

When friends from Down South visited us Up North we used to tell them to turn off the M6 when they hit the cobbles and look out for the whippets.

Violinist64 · 20/09/2024 10:22

I don't live in Sussex, but I have friends who do and I always enjoy my visits down there. I have found that, just like everywhere else, there are friendly and not so friendly people. In addition to this, my friends live five minutes' walk from the beach and the train journey from Brighton to their town is beautiful as you get glimpses of the sea all the time.

Nearly at the peak, samcro. For full marks, move to the Cotswolds.

well not only do I live in sussex, I live in Brighton and grew up in surrey.

so I am triple bad.
but maybe not and its just the op and people reacting to her bigotry.

No I am awful and having previously lived in the north, the Midlands and London I love it in beautiful Sussex, I find the people lovely but that probably means they are just a awful as I am.

My auntie was from Hastings and she always moaned it was a shit hole. But she was a bit of a snobby cow. Is that in Sussex?
I've been to Brighton in summer and it's just rammed busy, and the beach isn't that nice. But I've never thought people from there were rude particularly. They say it's similar to London in some ways so maybe people are not as friendly as in the middle of the countryside.
I always thought of Sussex as having a better reputation than Essex and Kent. I went to Margate once and the people there didn't seem awful or anything.

Hastings is in Sussex.

I live on the border and take pleasure in telling people I live in Surrey actually. Its tongue in cheek.

I'm from Sussex and my Dad is Northern. It's a lovely county, beautiful countryside. I think the snootiness just comes from people being busy, lack of time to make conversation, possibly a degree of miserableness due to house prices, but there are also some good communities. Possibly not as welcoming, as why would you move here when house prices are so high. Northerners are more hospitable.

I know a cave in the Outer Hebrides you could move to. We haven't had a hermit since St Cuthbert, so go for it
Then you don't have to make value judgements about anyone from anywhere.
