People have no patience about long queues

longlocks · 19/09/2024 12:07

I’m at a tourist attraction for an exhibition,On website, notices and staff say that queuing would be at least an hour outside and an hour inside. Plus walking around the exhibition takes an hour.

So I am queuing around people who are moaning about the waiting. No booking available before.

Then people are saying “I’m meeting up with so and so for lunch at 1pm.’ Well if you listened or read notices you shouldn’t have queued!

If you go across to the forum first and get the all in one ticket you get to skip the first line outside

Edit: or at least you could 10 years ago.

I’d be betting that Italians have a system that means if you understand the system you can skip an awful queue.

Edit - this is said with approval

People complain when they have to book a slot.
They complain if they can't book a slot and have to queue instead.

They will never please everyone. Popular venue = having to deal with other people.

It’s different people who complain if they have to book a slot.

And these people should not be pandered to as they simply can’t be bothered to organise themselves.

People who can be bothered to think in advance shouldn’t be stuck with having to queue because others moan about not being able to “just turn up”. In fact the very words “just turn up” have become rage inducing due to these type of people.

Colosseum in Rome. Got there 8:15am in 28c heat (September!) and queued for 2 hours outside then another 45 mins through airport type security- bags scanned, body wand etc

Yet people moaning about queues at TS gigs.

Sorry, X post. Queues for attractions in Italy are bloody awful because touts buy up a lot of the official timed tickets and resell them as 'skip the line' on getyourguide and suchlike.

So you end up either getting scalped by resellers or spending half your holiday in queues.

If you're going to other places have a look at the official websites (you can do it while you're standing in this queue!) and see if you can get timed entry tickets yourself from them. It will save you a lot of hassle.

I queued for what felt like hours for the Terracotta warriors exhibition in London. I think it was less than 2 hours though.

Meadowfinch · 19/09/2024 14:21

That's poor management on the part of the gallery. It's relatively straightforward to allocate time slots and save everyone the inconvenience.

I'd rather not attend.

The worst thing is queuing on the phone with intermittent automated message saying "do you know you can do xy or z online, just visit www.our company..."
Well duh if what I wanted was available easily online why would i be spending 50 min in a queue listening to horrific lift music...??

Edited

I remember having problems accessing my internet and every five minutes “please visit our website at www. for our FAQs.”

Yes I am the phone because I can’t go onto your website.

If you're in that queue to see the Queen, you're too late.

I've got better things to do with my life than spending two hours in a queue.
As previous posters have said, timed entry is the obvious solution. But they won't do that as they can charge more for "fast track" passes.
It's just another scam to get more money out of people, and I refuse to get drawn into that scenario.

Sums it up perfectly.

If you don't complain about queues then you maybe need more going on in your life, because even reading an ebook it's boring. You should value your time more.

2 hours to queue for an exhibition that takes an hour to get around? That would piss me off too. Organisers should organise - and that means not making people queue for hours, there are plenty of ways around it.

Totally agree. Why would anyone choose to spend an hour outside in a line of people and then spend another hour outside in a line of people? I just would not do that. There is nothing I would wait for an hour in a line of people for, nothing

TheSeagullsSquawk · 19/09/2024 13:41

Wow on Tutankhamen exhibition! and you are right people have always queued a long time to be the 'first' to see something on a limited tour.

I think it's the everydayness which is different.

Butchyrestingface · 19/09/2024 13:40

Fuck that, I'm surprised there hasn't been a bloodbath stampede yet. Moaning sounds positively tame.

Only thing I'd even consider queuing 2 hours for would be a Henry Cavill kiss-a-thon.

I know in general life moves faster than in the past so people do appear more impatient.

But in this case less so. Hour long queues for theme parks and attractions are a modern phenomenon - never happened in the 80s or 90s. It may be more people in general or higher expectations for leisure activities.

Any way - it sucks. Can't think of anything I'd queue 2 hours for.

Not entirely a modern phenomenon...

How 1.6million queued to see Tutankhamun's treasures at British Museum

Opened by the Queen in March 1972, the 'Treasures of Tutankhamun' exhibition beautifully displayed just a small fraction of the more than 5,000 artefacts found by Howard Carter.

WhatNoRaisins · 19/09/2024 13:32

That would have to be an absolutely awe inspiring attraction for it to be worth 2 hours of queuing.

Yeah, I get the Fast Pass thing, but all that means for me in practice is I’ll never go to these places. So, sure they’re raking in some cash but at the expense of the enjoyment of their visitors and the amount of people who want to go. It’s a soulless and horrible experience. But that’s capitalism. Everyone’s miserable but at least someone’s getting rich.

Plenty of people go, these places sell out, so it's fine. And if less people go, then the queue are less. Bingo!
It's also not soulless or horrible - lots of rides now theme their queues so you get to see far more if you have to queue.
I rarely have to queue for an hour at a theme park though, because we go when the schools are in.

And the "virtual queue" system it in place for big rides at Disney, for free I believe, which in reality means you HAVE to get there for park open, log on immediately, do all kinds of preplanning... I've watched YT videos about it, it looks far less fun and far more draining then just queueing tbh

Phen0menon · 19/09/2024 13:23

Thats a badly managed attraction. They need a queue management system.

goestheweasel · 19/09/2024 13:22

@Jaxhog been to lots of theme parks, Disney et al, never queued 2 hours!!

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 19/09/2024 13:19

Are you going to make us wait 2 hours to find out what the attraction is?

Jaxhog · 19/09/2024 13:16

I can see many of you have never been to a theme park! This sort of queuing is typical there.

While 2 hours queuing is uncomfortable, there was fair warning that this was the case; and if people don't check first, more fool them. It isn't always possible for venues to reduce queuing if a shed load of people turn up at the same time. It isn't to do with poor management on the part of the venue.

Timed slots often don't work either, as too many people still turn up when they feel like it.
