To get frustrated over pity errors my colleague makes

I work in a very small team of 2 plus our boss. We all WFH. My colleague is paid a London wage (she mentioned hers without me asking) which is over £10,000 more thank I get.

She makes a lot of silly mistakes. For example she replied to a forwarded email so the recipient of her reply did not include the original sender who had sent to query and needed the answer to which she replied and she wondered why the issue was outstanding. Another example - she does not check her work thoroughly so once (a lot of the times!) something went out with a mistake which was later returned and we had to correct it.

Our boss doesn’t get involved usually so quite often these errors and corrections are made without getting noticed.

However I feel like telling my boss she did this and that and I picked it and rectified it etc. but I don’t. It’s too pity. At the same time I feel disheartened because I get paid much less. For the context I did ask for a pay review based on my performance and my management agreed I am a high performer but the company as a whole only had a certain amount in the pot and none of us got more than inflation.

AIBU to feel like telling my boss my colleague has made a pity error?

The amount of fun others are having at this persons expense 😏

susey · 18/09/2024 17:51

I thought you meant pithy.

Anyway, it's very difficult to say if it's worth speaking up. It would look petty of you to point out to someone else when she has done something wrong. But you could stop coming to her rescue and fixing her errors and see what happens.

Balloonhearts · 18/09/2024 17:51

I could do with some pity cash about now. 🤣

Gazelda · 18/09/2024 17:45

Do you think that by telling boss about the pity errors, he'll give you a £10,000 raise?

What exactly is your motivation?

viques · 18/09/2024 17:24

I think you need to be looking for a change of job, preferably in a larger organisation where there will be too many people for you to have the time to keep tabs on their work.

Arlanymor · 18/09/2024 17:21

If she gets London weighting it’s because she will be paying more for her general cost of living. You’ve made five obvious errors in your first post - people in glass houses? We all make mistakes and the world operates more nicely when people are accepting of that fact. Maybe reflect a bit on why you are feeling the way you are - if you don’t feel you are remunerated sufficiently and there is no leeway within the company then look elsewhere?

Scallopp · 18/09/2024 17:18

You've actually made about 4 errors in your post. The things you mention are human error, they are petty reasons to be running to your boss and making yourself look daft.

DoYouReally · 18/09/2024 17:16

It can happen anyone.

Unfortunately your title confirms it.

HornyHornersPinger · 18/09/2024 17:05

Hahahahahahahahahahaha 🤣🤣🤣

The boss should sack the pair of you if that's your standard of writing and you're complaining about someone who has an even lower standard.

😂😂😂😂😂 this made me laugh.

Try to separate the two issues in your head, OP. An extra ten grand a year in London means nothing!

DeCaray · 18/09/2024 17:03

Maybe sing this every time you go to write petty as pity as a reminder -

Aquamarine1029 · 18/09/2024 17:02

Running to your boss like a schoolgirl tattling on a classmate over something petty is never a good look.

EngineEngineNumber9 · 18/09/2024 16:59

Thought that “pity” might have been a typo or autocorrect in the title… but no. It’s repeated in the post.

angstypant · 18/09/2024 16:59

🤣

loropianalover · 18/09/2024 16:58

Perhaps there are some… pity errors that you also make, which frustrate her.

BeMintBee · 18/09/2024 16:58

Although would be happy to take a donation from pity cash at the minute

Bjorkdidit · 18/09/2024 16:57

Muphry's Law strikes again.

It's up to your boss to deal with issues regarding the quality of everyone's work. Just concentrate on doing your work to a good standard. If errors are a real problem, you could suggest that everything is proofread by someone else before it goes out, but that's obviously going to increase everyone's workload and you'll also have all your errors pointed out, which you could currently be unaware of.

If they don't pay you what you want, time to look for another job. They're never going to reduce your colleague's pay to increase yours, which is what you're effectively hoping for.

BeMintBee · 18/09/2024 16:57

Hope OP isn’t in charge of petty cash 🤣

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 18/09/2024 16:57

Petty.

Aquamarine1029 · 18/09/2024 16:56

There may be another reason why you didn't get a raise, honestly. You've misspelled petty three times.

pictoosh · 18/09/2024 16:56

Wondered what a pity error was. Read the post. Laughed.

No you should not tell your boss about the petty errors.
As you can see, petty errors are something that everyone does, even you.

ComtesseDeSpair · 18/09/2024 16:56

This sounds like the sort of low-grade errors which I’d expect my team to address amongst themselves. Have you spoken with her about it, suggested that she ask somebody to proofread if she struggles with that sort of thing? I wouldn’t expect somebody to come running to me about their colleague’s incorrectly addressed email or typos - I’d expect them to be corrected within the team, that’s just standard practice. Major errors affecting entire projects or work streams, maybe, but not this shit.

Macaroni46 · 18/09/2024 16:55

Hmm not just your colleague making errors OP.

By 'pity' I presume you mean 'petty' which you've used 3 times incorrectly. Plus there was one other spelling error that I spotted.

Maybe concentrate on your own work and leave your colleague to hers.

Swissvisa · 18/09/2024 16:54

Petty. The word is Petty.

You make mistakes too. Don’t be… petty!
