Why would someone keep an empty envelope?

To ask why a person would keep an open but empty envelope with their name on the front. They haven't mistakenly kept it. I know this because it has been deliberately moved from its original place and hidden in a new place while they were tidying up.

Yes, it is my husband, my husband's name written on the front.
Now the envelope is inside a packet of photos, photos that I had never seen printed before, random photos from his photo stream from seven years ago. Yes I will ask him but wanted to get some ideas first.

So where was it before…?

Do you suspect something OP, if so what? Can't think why you'd be this concerned about an old envelope otherwise.

What were the photos of?

I have a random envelope with my name on it from my mum after she had a stroke which very nearly killed her. She has really distinct handwriting and she couldn’t hold a pen and write for a long time afterwards. My stepdad wrote my birthday card one year but she wanted to try on the envelope because she presumed I would throw it in the bin immediately but would keep the card up for a bit so didn’t want her ‘messy’ writing being kept. Couldn’t tell you what I got for my birthday that year but seeing that envelope made me cry because I could see it was her handwriting and it had been such a long time since I’d seen it. It lives in my drawer and it’s really special. I’m the least sentimental person I know but that envelope will stay with me forever.
sometimes envelopes mean more than you think!

For sentimental reasons.

The person who wrote it means something to him and it is a part of them that he wants to hang onto.

DoIWantTo · 18/09/2024 16:15

Well in this instance I’m assuming you live with the person that kept the empty envelope so the most logical thing to do is ask them and not people that aren’t keeping an empty envelope?

Just to wind you up and it's clearly working.

Seas164 · 18/09/2024 16:14

It's clearly imbued with magical properties, be careful you don't open the envelope under a full moon OP, it could be a portal to another dimension.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 18/09/2024 16:13

Who gave the envelope, what did the envelope contain?

DeCaray · 18/09/2024 16:13

I have a post it note with my name on (amongst other words of course) in a deceased relative's handwriting. Maybe something like that?

This. I have several random post it notes and gift tags and an old shopping list that my mum wrote. They probably look like rubbish to other people but they are very precious to me.

ThisPresetIsSelected · 18/09/2024 16:13

Probably a specific photo was previously kept in it, then got taken out and either hasn't been put back in it, or has been put back with the rest of the photos.

BabyofMine · 18/09/2024 16:12

People still print out photos??

loropianalover · 18/09/2024 16:12

I suspect you’ll have a better idea than any of us, OP.

vodkaredbullgirl · 18/09/2024 16:11

It's a mystery

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 18/09/2024 16:11

I sometimes keep an envelope, I might want to put something in it or take some money to the bank in it or something! The person who has kept it probably didn't think twice about it

BabyofMine · 18/09/2024 16:11

Maybe they’re trying to find out if you are snooping through their things.

Seriously though it would be more helpful if you explained who it was and why you are bothered by it, there must be a back story.

2Old2Tango · 18/09/2024 16:10

Always people have to come on and write a rude response rather than just scroll on by. I'd ignore them personally.

I would think the envelope means something to them. Maybe it came from someone deceased or no longer in their life and it's a reminder of them/their handwriting? We can only make guesses though and you'll only find out for sure by asking them.

Is this something your spouse or partner has and you're wondering if it's a connection to an ex? I'm not sure why else it would bother you enough to ask on here.

MrsPerfect12 · 18/09/2024 16:10

What are we reaching for? An affair,
a love letter, debt letters, DNA test results.
What do you think it is?

theemmadilemma · 18/09/2024 16:10

OP the answer is obviously because it's important to them. Clearly it's being kept 'safe'.

You know that, and you know the only way to find out why.

Hazeby · 18/09/2024 16:10

Well, why do you think they’ve kept it? You must have a theory.

narns · 18/09/2024 16:10

Is there any writing on the envelope? Why are you so concerned about it?

Anothernamebite · 18/09/2024 16:10

I wasn't searching for the envelope, I noticed the new packet of photos so looked at them, then noticed the envelope.

It has been hidden inside a packet of printed photos.

Sounds like you've gone snooping for something...why?

Aquamarine1029 · 18/09/2024 16:08

Why are you snooping?
