Why would someone keep an empty envelope?

To ask why a person would keep an open but empty envelope with their name on the front. They haven't mistakenly kept it. I know this because it has been deliberately moved from its original place and hidden in a new place while they were tidying up.

I think the far bigger question is why the hell you would even notice let alone would care enough to post on mumsnet.

Honestly if I found an envelope with DH name on I would just pick it up and move it or leave it where ever it was minding its business without even a second thought. So strange this bothered you this much to gossip about it online, seems awfully controlling and red flaggy of you.

LePetitMaman · 18/09/2024 19:25

Because the contents were special to him. And you wouldn't like what they were. So they're long gone. If they were hidden in a better place elsewhere, they would still be in the envelope.

They were of enough importance that the envelope was kept as a momento, knowing you couldn't prove anything just by the envelope.

I kept the envelope from a beautiful letter from my ex. I can almost recite the letter word for word. I had to throw the letter away when I met my abusive ex husband because he'd have used it as a weapon against me, but he wouldn't ever have been able to know what the envelope contained. He was always going through my things, and he did find it. I told him it was the envelope that tickets came in for a Father Christmas trip for my and ds one year and having lost the tickets, kept the envelope as a reminder. He seemed to believe it.

Ask why someone might hide something from you. Is it more likely they have something to hide...or is it they know how you'll treat them if you find it.

Is there more to this story which explains why you’re suspicious? If I found an open, empty envelope with my boyfriends name on mixed up with his stuff, I would think absolutely nothing of it.

YeahWellWhyNot · 18/09/2024 19:15

I would guess if it was my DH that it was some sort of bookmark. But I suppose if you're that worried you have separate concerns about his behaviour.

2k2j · 18/09/2024 19:08

My dh kept the envelope from the anniversary card I gave him.

2dogsandabudgie · 18/09/2024 19:03

If they are photos that you haven't seen before and they're from seven years ago, were they perhaps taken at a family event or similar and whoever took them decided to print them off and give them to your husband, hence his name on the envelope.

PeachRose1986 · 18/09/2024 18:04

Most likely because it was written by someone he loves (I was thinking a close relative rather than a lover).

You have absolutely no idea what explanation is "most likely."

Ceebeegee · 18/09/2024 18:52

My boyfriend keeps an opened envelope, it was his last from his mum - she used to give them money in an envelope instead of cards. He keeps it for sentimentality

lightsandtunnels · 18/09/2024 18:47

Maybe he's just too lazy to chuck it in the bin? My DH always goes nuts at me when I put envelopes in the drawer sometimes, I just do it for no reason other than just being lazy and cba to walk through to the kitchen bin. So perhaps there is nothing else in it that that!

MartinCrieffsLemon · 18/09/2024 18:46

This might be the most batshit thing to be suspicious about on MN

He wanted the stamp
It was an accident, it was folded to go in the shredding and got picked up in the photos which he opened at the same time
It was from a deceased family member and he was keeping it safe because the handwriting is special but he felt it was too "girly sentimental" to let other people know
It was just the closest thing to split the pile of photos into the categories he'd chose
He suspects you rifle through his stuff so it was placed and folded specifically so he'd know if you were digging around because you're so suspicious

Riapia · 18/09/2024 18:41

Why can’t anybody see, the DH is having a torrid affair. Nothing says it more than a hidden envelope.
Especially as it’s hidden amongst photographs.
It’s so obvious. It happens all the time.
You must LTB immediately OP don’t wait for any explanation.

blueshoes · 18/09/2024 18:34

OP, have you opened the envelope?

The fact that it is folded over suggests that he chose it as a container to store something small, which may be unrelated to the envelope or its previous contents. Could it be a USB or hair or something sentimental?

runningonberocca · 18/09/2024 18:34

My DP does this if it’s a fancy stamp. I keep a non fancy envelope that was posted to me because it was the last thing my mum had posted to me before she died and I really really can’t bring myself to throw it out..

BlueGrackle · 18/09/2024 18:14

The paper it’s made from is nice.

Beautifulweeds · 18/09/2024 18:14

May have meaning to them, I have one too. Xx

Gremle · 18/09/2024 18:12

Does he like glue ?

OilLamp · 18/09/2024 18:05

Envelope fetish obviously

Stravaig · 18/09/2024 18:04

If my spouse was tracking the whereabouts of an envelope with my name on it, had checked its contents, and began questioning me about its significance: then I'd give them their very own envelope, with divorce papers in it.

PeachRose1986 · 18/09/2024 18:04

Most likely because it was written by someone he loves (I was thinking a close relative rather than a lover).

SeptimusSheep · 18/09/2024 17:57

It has the next budget on the back?

Aquamarine1029 · 18/09/2024 16:08

Why are you snooping?

Shut up !!

This is my favourite thread ever - keep snooping OP.

Who wrote the name ? That’s ya clue !

MrsWinkly · 18/09/2024 17:55

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 18/09/2024 17:33

I keep an old envelope my child sent me from a summer camp.

It has my name on and a drawing of a dinosaur next to it.

there was nothing in it, I suppose the message was the drawing. Grin

Awww! I'm the same, bloody hundreds of scrappy little bits of paper but they're all sentimental. Their doodles were like catnip to me 😁

I'm leaning towards the 'forgot to throw it away' or using it as a 'place marker' OP.
Doesn't sound hugely significant - I'm always putting random bits of paper down in places if I get distracted by what's in front of me then forgetting they're there.

supportpangolin · 18/09/2024 17:54

OP hasn't said the envelope is a stamped envelope nor that it bears his address in addition to his name. It may well do, but OP has not said so.

All she has said is: "...an open but empty envelope with their name on the front"

betterangels · 18/09/2024 17:54

Allywill · 18/09/2024 17:33

my husband kept an envelope that was franked “on her majesty’s service” think it made him feel like James Bond!

Love this!

AddictedToBooks · 18/09/2024 17:54

I sometimes keep envelopes in a memory box if my mum or dad have written on them because they're elderly and I know that one day, I'll no longer get anymore envelopes with their handwriting. I store the envelopes first because the cards are on display for a while.
Deep down I know it's not logical but it means something to ME.

When we were tidying the loft a couple of years ago, I found an old photo album which I'd used to make a scrapbook and found an old piece of my beloved Nanna's handwriting and she died decades ago - it's precious to me.
