Why would someone keep an empty envelope?

To ask why a person would keep an open but empty envelope with their name on the front. They haven't mistakenly kept it. I know this because it has been deliberately moved from its original place and hidden in a new place while they were tidying up.

It’s from his other wife.

DickEmery · 18/09/2024 22:10

Drugs. It's always drugs.

My husband keeps all manner of random bits of paper, envelopes, documents, most often frustratingly folded into avsmall square so i have to open it out to figure out what it is, in all sorts of places. I open and throw away what is clearly rubbish but lots I just have to leave mouldering away in their "hiding" place. There is no reason at all why some of them are folded away... if I ask why it's been kept, or kept in a particular place, I get a blank stare.... he genuinely has no idea, no memory of folding them up and squirreling them away instead of putting them in the bin.
So.... my point I'd, it's quite possible that there is no reason at all for this envelope being stuffed in with the photos, just random chance.

Probably contains an invisible letter from a wizard.

DeanElderberry · 18/09/2024 21:12

He suspects attempts are being made to control him, and that even the most trivial and unimportant details of his life are being snooped on, so he has set up as trivial and unimportant a thing as possible as a test case.

Do not coerce him into binning his envelope.

I had an empty envelope on my desk with my name on it. I kept it, cos I thought it might come in useful for something else.

HTH.

Yep I've done this

HeliotropePJs · 18/09/2024 21:00

I'm guessing the handwriting looks feminine and you suspect/worry that it's a memento from a woman who is not his relative and likely not deceased.

I can't deny that it would probably hurt if I found my DH was holding on to something from a former girlfriend or crush. Having a few old 'tokens' tucked away is obviously everyone's right, but I wouldn't like to think he was frequently looking at them, cherishing them, obsessing about the past or a missed opportunity.

But on the other hand, it could be something completely different.

Josette77 · 18/09/2024 20:50

I have an envelope with my name on it in my best friends handwriting.

GalileoHumpkins · 18/09/2024 20:41

Find said photos, look through them, infront of DH... oh what's this doing here (envelope) I'll chuck that in the recycling... wait for response, ask questions about response if necessary

Guaranteed to make you look like a tit.

Sidebeforeself · 18/09/2024 20:36

Oh come on, surely you know the Hidden Envelope Trick? I thought everyone knew that one?!

Mix56 · 18/09/2024 20:34

I have an old used envelope my dad sent me at some point. he is gone now.
I love seeing his writing

katepilar · 18/09/2024 20:30

Why not? Does it seem weird to you?

takealettermsjones · 18/09/2024 16:03

I have a post it note with my name on (amongst other words of course) in a deceased relative's handwriting. Maybe something like that?

I have cards from my dad for the same reason, I couldn't part with them.

TequilaNights · 18/09/2024 20:28

I keep lots of random 'memories' in random forms, I have a piece of tissue I keep, It holds the last memory of someone, but to someone else would be so random.

Bayern · 18/09/2024 20:10

I feel like I need to know the answer to this one.

nadine90 · 18/09/2024 20:07

I know exactly what happened.
One day, your OH was lovingly looking through some photographs he stumbled upon, when something big and hairy scuttled across the floor in his peripheral vision. It was a spider! A rather scary looking one with biceps and a mean look on his face.
He let out a tiny squeal and was tempted to run away, but he decided to protect his family and deal with it himself.
After some flailing around to find a glass, and with the spider now imprisoned, he needed a scooper. A single sheet of paper wouldn’t have provided enough protection. He contemplated using cardboard, but worried he’d have to lift the glass too high that the spider may escape. Then it came to him - that random envelope he’d just seen in with the photos! He slid the envelope beneath the glass with ease, and safely released the spider to the garden. He then went to dispose of the useless envelope, but paused before chucking it in the blue bin.
“September is spider season,” he thought, “I shall keep this multi-purpose piece of folded paper, for it is the exact tool we need for removing future unwanted guests”.
And so he placed it in a place where he could easily reach it, for next time.

halava · 18/09/2024 20:05

If his name is handwritten, he probably kept it for a time capsule. No one handwrites letters/envelopes these days do they?

Edit - unless it's a Christmas card maybe!

PattiSmithsPattis · 18/09/2024 20:04

Is there a date? Postmark? Stamp?
I take it you don't recognise the writing?
My own personal reasons for keeping envelopes is I've usually written on them or drawn on them.

WeatheredRockFormation · 18/09/2024 20:04

My guess is the person who wrote his name on the envelope has deep meaning to him. It is always lovely to see your name written by someone you love dearly. Maybe someone no longer in his life who he holds with great fondness.

Stravaig · 18/09/2024 20:00

Now the envelope is inside a packet of photos, photos that I had never seen printed before, random photos from his photo stream from seven years ago.

This is giving similar vibes to the 'I was scrolling photos from 7 years ago on DP's tablet and found one of a fully-clothed unknown woman in a public place, how should I interrogate him' thread from a few weeks back. 🚩

Starlight7080 · 18/09/2024 19:55

I have empty envelope with my name on written by my grandma . It's just sentimental.

Could that be why?

djs94 · 18/09/2024 19:49

I mean, I have kept things in the past with a dead loved ones writing on, for example cards, envelopes, scrap bits of paper they have written things down on - is it from someone who he has lost?

DreamTheMoors · 18/09/2024 19:42

Why is it so important to you that you’re asking ransoms on the internet but not important enough to you that you won’t ask the person in question?
I find this exceedingly odd.
It’s an envelope.
With their name written on it.
It isn’t a love letter.
It isn’t a bribe.
It isn’t extortion.
It isn’t treason.
It isn’t State secrets.
It isn’t a long lost will.
It isn’t a secret property ownership.
It isn’t a secret wedding certificate.
It isn’t a £50Million cheque
Ir isn’t proof of a secret second family.
It isn’t a secret birth certificate.
It’s an envelope.
With their name written on it.
That you conveniently found “hidden in a pack of photos.”

I’m just making myself laugh now.
