Just wondering how much skinny people eat in a day and if I am over eating?

I have been interested to read some of the threads about ozempic etc that it takes away the constant thinking about food.

I've been a pretty consistent weight all my life and would say I eat what I like but I don't think like this. I enjoy a cake or ice cream etc but I don't think about it all day. If I'm hungry I might look for something and think 'ooh that looks good' but I don't recognise the constant thinking about food described.

I wonder if this is a key difference and how much of the damage is done by dieting and the creation of unhealthy thoughts patterns.

I probably auto correct a bit. I've had two not great meals today as went to pub for lunch. But I didn't have any snacks and a smaller portion for tea. I don't like the over stuffed feeling where as from the other thread, people seem to derive pleasure from that.

I have never seen it described like that before and I guess without injections you never really know how the alternative approach feels. It was quite eye opening.

There's so much variation on here and I'm starting to see how some people can be really judgemental of others. If you're someone who eats in a very controlled and restricted way to maintain a size 10 or 12, maybe you look at people who are a 6 or 8 and assume they're eating even less and so must be starving themselves to dangerous degree - when in fact, according to some responses here they might be eating much more than you. If you're someone who eats a hearty three meals per day plus snacks and stays pretty effortlessly at a 10 then maybe you look at someone who's a size 18 and assume they must be eating staggering amounts of food and are really greedy when again they might not be eating large amounts at all.

From the range of responses on this thread there is so much more happening than just calories in and out - people are talking about genetics, hormones, metabolism, age, body shape etc as playing a major role. It seems like some people respond better to carbs than others, intermittent fasting is crucial for some and impossible or unnecessary for others, exercise is really varied - I personally have never understood the concept of 'running around after small children', mine never moved that fast haha. I remember being much more sedentary when I had toddlers because we were walking slowly everywhere at a two year old's pace, or I was standing in the park pushing the swings, holding them in the baby swimming pool or sitting on the floor playing trains whereas now they're teenagers we can go on long, fast walks, swim in the sea or I can leave them at home to get to the gym. And we all sleep through the night so have the energy for exercise too!

Basically, what I'm getting from this thread is confirmation of what I already knew; there are no hard and fast rules, we shouldn't be making assumptions about people's habits and health from looking at their size and what works for one person might make another person really miserable - it's much more complicated than some people, especially those pushing a particular diet, would have us believe!

My mum got down to a size 8 (from a 12/14) in her forties and stayed like that since. She cut out absolutely loads of foods and eats 0 processed foods. Makes her own bread and only eats 1 small slice of it per day with a poached egg. Mostly eats veg and fish, no meat, no pasta, etc. small amount of rice. Her portion sizes are absolutely minuscule - my kids are are starving after eating at hers, and she dishes up the same amount for us all! She also walks for miles every day.

whateveryouwantmetosay · 22/09/2024 02:52

Also drink black coffee and water only.

whateveryouwantmetosay · 22/09/2024 02:51

I am size 10. Sometimes a 12 and trying to lose weight.

I try to intermittent fast

Protein shake and salad for lunch. Yogurt based dressing

Protein bar for snack.

Protein + veg and maybe carb (potato or rice) for dinner.

Snack before bedtime is protein based (e.g. Greek yogurt).

I workout 5 day/week plus walks 3x week on top.

@mathanxiety
Yes, that's what I understand, I was questioning why PP said bones were why someone of exact same height and appearance could be 3 stone different in weight due to bones. Frame shape wouldn't account for that.

CharlotteBog · 19/09/2024 09:32

You were 7 stone? That's a BMI of less than 15. I hope you are a healthier weight now. I don't really understand what you're saying about big bones.

Look at the differing widths of people's shoulders, chests (minus boobs) and pelvises/ hips. People can have feet of various widths, knees of various widths, etc.

Alconleigh · 21/09/2024 20:30

I'm 5 ft 2 and a bit under 8 stone. Today I've had toast, a banana, a sourdough pizza for lunch, roast mutton, potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and veg for dinner (with seconds) plus some sort of creamy meringue pudding and a couple of glasses of red wine. Probably won't eat anything else today but about to have a negroni.
Other days vary massively. This is a much a weekend level of consumption.

Ilikeviognier · 21/09/2024 20:25

I’m a 6. 5ft 2, 7 stone 6. I’ve been this weight and size for years. I eat more or less what I want within reason, but I eat slowly, stop when I’m full, am very active and always walk instead of drive if it’s possible. I don’t particularly snack but would if I was hungry.

I do eat chocolate etc but eat a little - just enough to satisfy the sweet tooth.

All that said, tbh I think genes play a big part in size and metabolism. My mum and grandma were both the same as me.

Positivenancy · 21/09/2024 20:20

I’m a size 8-10 and I’m 5”2 and honestly with very little activity, I also have an overactive thyroid for which I take medication.
Today I had;
Breakfast- 2 poached eggs, two slices of toast, two cooked tomatoes and one piece streaky bacon.
snack - half of a twirl and 2 cups of tea
late lunch- a steak sandwich with a few fried potatoes, and then a chocolate dessert bar and a cup of tea.
I have just had another cup of tea.

That’ll be it for today.

Usually, I have my three meals. And possibly a little snack at some point in day, but not every day.

bk1981 · 21/09/2024 20:15

Size eight. 5'5 and weigh 8st 1lb.
Friday was:
Low sugar granola with half a chopped banana.
Banana as a snack.
Leftover pasta and veg soup.
Apple.
Mac n cheese.

Today:
Scrambled eggs on two slices of toast.
Apple.
Leftover Mac n cheese.
Salmon with rice and green beans.

I try to cook from scratch for and avoid upf wherever possible unless out and about. We have the occasional takeaway or homemade dessert.

Sammie233 · 21/09/2024 17:33

Breakfast - either nothing (yes I’m bad and it’s not intentional ) or cup of tea with a few biscuits

Lunch- weekday a packed lunch - sandwich, fruit, crisps and a chocolate

Dinner- eg meatballs & spagetti, chicken & rice
…

today I’ve had

Small costa Mocha

Steak fajitas

Packet of crisps

for dinner I’ll have another steak fajita

I also drink a lot of water and tend not to eat after 6/7pm

YesHesAPlonker · 21/09/2024 10:08

LunaNorth · 19/09/2024 09:00

Small bowl…small portion…huge salad…no breakfast…tap water for 16 hours…small handful of…a single square…teaspoon of…

There’s definitely a script to these threads.

Then you're not reading the same thread as me 🤷🏼‍♀️. While my usual diet is who, food plant based - this week I've been out for a 3 course meal, lots of cheese, fish and roast potatoes were consumed. Last night I went to a BBQ where I ate copious amounts of nibbles, pizza and at least three different cakes as people brought food to share. This will not cause me to suddenly go up from an 8/10 because my usual diet is healthy, I eat well with generous amounts of food, including lots of nuts, seeds, oils. I never think about calories these days.

ByDreamyMintNewt · 21/09/2024 09:22

Size 10, 5ft9, about 10 and a half stone - I had a baby not long ago, but I'd say my standard weight is around 10 stone. I was up to about 12 and a bit stone in pregnancy but back in size 10 clothes after a couple of weeks (breastfeeding seems to help weight fall off me) and I've been the same general size since around 18. Short answer is I eat whatever I fancy - it's all genetics for me, most of my mum's family are the same build of tall and slim. When I was a teen I was teased for being skinny and lanky but I'm now grateful. Periods of stress I tend to lose my appetite and also lose weight very quickly then.

Standard day:
Breakfast - cup of tea with sugar. Honey nut cornflakes or marmite on toast for breakfast. Sometimes both if I have the time and I'm feeling indulgent.

Lunch - when I'm at work I'll have a hot lunch, maybe lasagne or similar. At home then maybe soup with bread, or a sandwich, or the occasional ready meal. Usually have a bag of crisps after.

Dinner - hot dinner, pasta, curry, etc. Home made food though. Take away a couple of times a month.
Might have snacks in evening, like crisps or chocolate.

Happii · 21/09/2024 09:08

It's irrelevant really as everyone is different, generally though there are very few people who are size 10 and below but eat wildly over and above their BMR calories a day.

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 21/09/2024 09:06

The bones thing has to have something in it.. me and my mum are both the same height and weight. I’m a size 8 on the top, 10 on the bottom (I carry my weight on my tummy a bit), she’s a size 12, maybe a 14 on top. I’m 40’s, she’s 70’s. But I remember the same thing in my teens.. she was always bigger even if we were a similar weight. (It actually gave me some level of body dysmorphia, because I had a picture in my head of what eg 8 stone looked like which really didn’t match my body..)

Pickingmyselfup · 19/09/2024 14:51

LunaNorth · 19/09/2024 09:24

Might that be because your eating is very restricted, which leads to a blowout?

Yes and no, it's never restricted too much because I would never cope but to lose weight and even maintain I have to eat less than I would like so when I fall off I fall off hard.

lissom · 19/09/2024 13:08

just as an aside, I do eat very little UPF but loads of carbs like the previous poster.

lissom · 19/09/2024 13:07

I'm 5 foot 7 and weigh 60 kg, a classic size 10. I'm late 40s. Weighed 50 kg in my 20s but in those days had no muscles. Quite a bit of HIIT, running, gym (weights and elliptical), most days. I noticed that weight settling on my upper body more these days. I have muesli for breakfast, a big balanced lunch, big balanced dinner, and a small mid afternoon sandwich. Actually quite a lot of food, but I am very active besides the sport. I try to stay off sugar but I bloody love it. so try to stick to 2-3 desserts or choc bars per week. Try to eat between 9 am and 8 pm. Try never to have late night snacks. Also I feel like HRT has helped a lot. Completely gave up alcohol 2 years ago and highly recommend.

goestheweasel · 19/09/2024 11:46

Whole foods, try to avoid UPF. Lots of oats, seeds, nuts, fruits, veg and drink lots of water, try to keep most of my fueling at mealtimes, whole foods are more filling to avoid snacking.

But I also eat alllll the carbs, lots of bread, rice and pasta, I also have one sweet treat a day but try to make sure it's something homemade in the week, then allow myself chocolate and wine on the weekend.

I'm not really sure how else to put it without repeating myself but Ill try another way.

Someone might be 4 foot 9 and someone else 6 foot 5... thats due to their bones. Just as your bones effect your height they can effect your width too.

These two things things do not have to correlate, you can have someone short with wide bone frame or tall with slim bones frame.

OK - I always thought when people said they had big bones they meant they were bigger and heavier than...I don't know...the standard, and that was why they were heavier.

I understand what frame means. Bones are generally about the same density. BMI takes into account different frame sizes.

I think it is reasonable for the PP to wonder about how 2 people of the same height and similar size (clothing and to look at) can vary in weight so much. I think it's down to muscle and fat rather than heavier/lighter bones. Skeletal mass does vary of course, but not to the tune of 3 stone.

I’m a size 10 and 5 ft 7.

I eat the same breakfast pretty much every day which is Greek yoghurt with muesli and berries and a teaspoon of honey. It’s the 10% real greek yoghurt, not low fat pretend stuff.

Lunch varies day to day but on a work day is usually just a meal deal so a falafel and hummus wrap with fruit or a little Tony’s chocolonely bar sometimes.

Dinner also varies, sometimes a full medium pizza to myself! Most of the time some sort of veggie pasta, curry or risotto dish.

Always have dessert and it’s always cake or chocolate and sometimes will snack on an oat bar, fruit or crisps.

I run at least 3x a week and one run is at least 10km and I try to lift weights at least twice a week and do a HIIT at least twice. Walk 30 mins each way from train station to work and always take the stairs.

oObyeOo · 19/09/2024 10:12

What’s your extreme sport… just being nosy. I climb so like to keep my weight low

2100 cals doesn't seem that much for someone doing a great deal of sport.

Mrsttcno1 · 19/09/2024 10:20

So interesting to see others diets! I’m back to a my usual size 8 now, 5 months postpartum so my body does look a bit different, but comfortably back in all my size 8 clothes.

Typical for me is:

Breakfast: Chicken sausage bagel thin/bacon bagel thin/porridge/toast

Mid morning snack: Fruit and a yoghurt

Lunch: Chicken & rice/tuna pasta/shredded chicken wrap/wrap pizza, all would be with veg/salad to bulk the meal up

Afternoon snacks: Spready cheese & crackers/crisps/biscuit/more fruit

Dinner: Lasagne/Chilli/Spag bol/Steak & potatoes/Curry, again all with veg/salad

Then if still hungry I’ll have an ice cream or something after!

It looks like a lot of food written down but I’ve always eaten like this and been size 8 for as long as I remember really. I would say I do have quite high activity levels though, I run, go to the gym, and have a big dog so even on a non-gym/running day I cover 6/7 miles walking with dog & pram.
