Aquarius1234 · 16/09/2024 23:50

To find that annoying when your 27/ 28
Now 38 hearing nearly 40.
Maybe the 7,8,9 s shouldn't exist. !!
2 or 3 years is a long enough time imo.
In my head I'm eye rolling.
Is 29 not as interesting as 30?
Is 38 just seen as 40?
Is 57 just 60?

Sounds difficult.

Well you are 'nearly' 30. Although I did freak out when I was 30 so I understand.

I am 44 and on my 40h birthday a woman in work said I was now in my 50th decade. Thanks for that!

Probably insecure to say that.

I despise it because people do it to women in an "ooh, you're nearly 40" way... like "oooooh, only a few more years until you are OLD OLD OLD.

It is always said with a smug little smile.

Indeed. Or in a you haven't achieved enough.
Men don't get it, half as much.
I haven't won the lottery or climbed a mountain. .

Why not enjoy every month of 29 / 39/ 49 rather than discussing time ahead.
In my mind they are the weird people. Should get a hobby or something.
And Christmas talk is tedious.

Honestly given your obsession over it, I'm not sure it other people who need a hobby.

By all means say "actuat I'm only 87, not 90!" but they aren't factually incorrect. In the scheme of 87 years, three is only a tiny moment away

Agreed, I feel like people always do it as a dig not just as a matter of fact.

@ParisVSLille oh don't be silly

I get you OP, people are weird about ages these days. Even a 35 year old is described as "nearly 40" or "middle-aged" now-since when was mid-30s middle aged?!

Agreed, I'm my age not older or younger 😆 I'll be 40/50/60 when I am that age

I know what you mean although in my case I'm doing it to myself, thinking about 'hmm now I'm coming up to 40'. My friends of the same age are doing it too so I've jokingly put us on a ban from talking about it. Not that it's bad to be 40, but why rush it. When I was 36 I didn't spend time thinking hmm guess I'll be turning 38 soon.

Its a bit like when the christmas decorations start coming out in the shops in September.

Indeed, life is short so why live in the future rather than the present.

@ParisVSLille I think you need to get one actually it's obviously a fairly light-hearted thread and you're telling her she's not mentally sound and needs help 🙄

You’re not mentally sound, and obviously have deep issues with getting older and age. That much is clear. Hope you get the help you need.

CheekyHobson · 17/09/2024 03:52

People never age down always up.

Thats because aging only goes in one direction, surely.

FruitFlyPie · 17/09/2024 03:47

GiddyRobin · 17/09/2024 01:45

I've always rounded up a bit, to be honest. I was "nearly" 30 from about 27. From 32 I was "nearly" 35. DH was nearly 40 for a good while, too. So much so we both laughed that turning 40 didn't feel like a huge event. We both do it, not sure why. It's not a big deal though.

Could you explain why it's bothering you? Are you worried about aging?

catscalledbeanz · 17/09/2024 01:21

But that's maths isn't it? I'm shit at math but was definitely taught that under the five we round down, over the five.....

Honestly op you seem hung up on age. So someone ages you two or three years older? What does that actually matter? You haven't changed. Nothing has changed. But you feel aggrieved- perhaps because as a woman you feel that your value is in some way connected to youth. You seem angry that people may take 2 years from your age. You are 2/3 years younger!!Except they aren't taking anything from you- you are still 47(or whatever number) and will still live as many years as you would have if they had identified you as 40 rather than 50.

gabbydanes · 17/09/2024 00:20

As soon as you are past the 6 you are rounded up. Unfortunately when you are a 2 or a 3 you aren't rounded down.

She doesn’t really need to try again though, does she?! You knew what she meant! 🤫

OP, it doesn’t really bother me tbh. It does bother my Mum, she didn’t like speaking about her 60th at 57 because she felt years away from it.

Same as mine at 67. 3 years a lot can happen.

No need to plan anything years in advance.

I can't really decipher what you're on about .
Only that your grammar is bad.
"You're as in you are...NOT your".
Maybe try again???

Ponoka7 · 17/09/2024 00:08

I'm nearly 57, but consider myself nearly 60. I want to do something special for it. My DD is 30 next year, but has considered herself nearly 30 for a few years. It's just how people think of things differently.

Oh I hope she enjoyed being 27/ 28/ 29
Those ages still count!! Lol

You sound obsessed with numerical ages and numbers generally. Nothing wrong with that..but There's no meaningful difference from one second before your birthday to one second at the beginning of it. You're exactly the same and look exactly the same!
I was told I looked 51 the other day. I said 'I'd be fucking chuffed if I looked like this and I was 51!' maybe that's the way forward. I'm a really decent looking 74...🤣

Yeh that's why I've never been bothered about birthdays. I could have more fun days/ weekends outside of when its my birthday.

I was bothered maybe in late 20s. But now I don't care half as much. Just feels like a dig. And also untrue.
People never age down always up.
