To ask if you’ve ever become obsessed with a murder case?

I was watching a true crime podcast on YouTube and it finished and went to a random suggestion and it was a 2 minute video of a crime scene inside a subway from the 80s on an ordinary news channel.

I looked into the case and there’s nothing on it apart from a one column blurb in the newspaper at the time and the victims photo being sold on Amazon. It’s so weird .. and I can’t stop thinking about it.

Anyone else?

The Beaumont children in Adelaide. Just vanished. Sadly it appears they will never be found and no one will ever know what happened to them.

Oh yes that was baffling. No trace at all!

Also Colin Pitchfork. Both Lynda and Dawn came from villages 7 miles from where I live.

Dont get the law courts obsession with wanting Pitchfork on parole. He needs permanent locking up as he was on parole once and didnt last 5 mins.

@AnotherNameChange0 there has been a lot happening with the Asha degree case this week

Disappearance of 13 year old April Fabb in 1969. In rural Norfolk.

I listened to the Lucy Letby trial every week via the podcast. When they read out everything she'd done to kill each tiny baby it made me cry. I think she's guilty. The inquiry that's happening now is very interesting and I'm listening to that podcast too.

I also find both the Chris Watts and Scott Peterson cases interesting. They are both so similar to me, outwardly mild mannered, almost taciturn. But capable of such brutal violence. And similar behaviour afterwards too, devoid of feelings of grief and guilt.

Scott Peterson is a truly awful person. The fact the he still maintains his innocence is bizarre to me. I'll be interested to hear his appeal.

The only case I became really emotionally involved with was the disappearance of an 8 year old (El pescaito) in circumstances so incredible, with so many twists and turns, it could have been an Agatha Christie's book.

It was the largest missing person search ever in Spain, and it gripped the whole nation. We all kept hoping we'd be found alive but was murdered pretty soon after his disappearance.

I still think of him and his parents.

Definitely not an obsession but the Lucy Letby case makes me shiver yet I take it all in. If there is even a slight chance she is innocent as many professionals have stated, it would be an absolute abomination of our justice system.

How could there be any chance of that though? Do people forget the notes she wrote, found in her house, admitting to killing the children?

Imagine him getting love letters in prison.
Sickening. People are warped.

Oh god that reminds me of when I had a prison penpal. I was super young tho-like 16/17 (had to lie about my age) and it was never love letters. But I look back and think WTF did I do that for. I started regretting it a few months in. My parents used to ask why I had "department of corrections" stamped on some of my letters! I honestly don't know why I did it and think what an idiot now.

A case that stays with me is baby Liam Gonzales Bennett. He was found in his bed with severe head injuries thought to be caused by a fist. Apparently his mother had decided to take away his dummy. They estimated that he had over 30 injuries.

His mother and her partner of the time were both suspects but no one was ever charged. Prosecutors couldn't decide who was responsible.

They literally got away with the murder of a poor innocent baby. I followed the case at the time and often think of him.

An eerie disappearance and death that is most likely a murder- Madison Scott. The story of how she disappeared from a campsite without a trace or any clues left behind made every hair on my body stand up. Last year they found the body after 12 years of searching.

Agree. That was a weird one.

Yes, I listened to the podcast on this. So weird! She/her family murdered him because he made her move from one part of Florida to another!

Yes I am completely obssessed with the case of the murder of Dan Markel, a law professor, in Florida. His ex wife's family ordered a hit on him and the machinations of the case are just fascinating.

Agree. That was a weird one.

FoleyHuck · 17/09/2024 03:49

I'm fascinated by true crime and the Anni Dewani case particularly horrified and captured me (the honeymoon couple in South Africa who were 'hijacked' after a meal out). I followed it closely at the time in 2010, having been to South Africa & some of the same places the previous year.

I met my (now) Husband in 2019 and after some months of dating in a conversation about crimes and murders he dropped in that he'd gone to school with someone who'd been murdered in a high profile case. He went to school with Annie Dewani & knows her family. His Dad attended the trial in a professional capacity Shock

The murders of Christopher Byers, Stevie Branch & Michael Moore in West Memphis, Arkansas. The discourse between both sides (did the West Memphis 3 do it or was it someone else) is fascinating but the most awful thing was the botched investigation by the state. Then, when it became clear that the WM3 would get a new trial, they arranged legal matters so that no-one else can ever be tried for the crimes. Meaning this case really won't ever be solved.

Yes this one. Still think the original three were guilty. But who knows?

JonBenet too.

To think that Chris Watts and his parents thought they were entitled to the life insurance money was the final nail in their coffins. Disgusting behaviour

For cases like JonBenet and Madeleine it is very likely that the assumed truth is probably very close to the actual truth but we will never know

DreamTheMoors · 17/09/2024 03:40

I can’t say I was obsessed, but it sure captured my attention.
The Laci Peterson murder case made US national headlines and it happened very close to where I live.
It was tragic and terrible and awful.
And her murderer-husband has been back in the news recently because the L.A. Innocence Project has taken up his cause. It’s hogwash.
The above innocence project is not related to the national innocence project, btw, and their “evidence” is shaky and crap and was, I believe, disproven years ago.

Katielovesteatime · 17/09/2024 03:05

I'm obsessed with the Idaho student murders. I am shocked by how many people think Bryan Kohberger is innocent! Can't wait for the trial.

Brown's Chicken Shop Massacre of 1993 - I fell down a rabbit hole and read court and appeal papers ... I don't think they got the right people.

That's just at the moment!

Sophie Toscan du Plantier. Read every iota of evidence, and am convinced I
figured it out. Really feel for her poor parents.

Have you seen the four-part documentary about it? It is the best crime programme I've ever watched.

Boiledbeetle · 17/09/2024 02:14

My murder obsession is the murder of 83 year old Agnes Cresswell who was bludgeoned to death at some point between 11 and 14 May 1968 in Bradford, West Yorkshire by an 18 year old called Steven Rushworth, (who was already a double convicted rapist by 15).

Unfortunately the National archives won't unlock the file until 1st January 2026! I can find nothing about it apart from a Daily Mirror (I think) article from the time, and I can't even find that now. I know who murdered her (and that he went to prison), but I really want to know the details of the case.

This one is personal for me as I was a victim of his a few years after he was released from prison for the murder and finding more out about what he did before he came into my life will hopefully help me make some sense of, and make peace with what happened in my life.

On a none personal note I read a book Victim: The Other Side of Murder" by Gary Kinder in the mid 80s about a horrific robbery, and murders, at a HiFi shop in 1974. "I've read it countless times over the years and the senseless brutality of what happened never fails to horrify me. Of course I had to wait for the internet to exist before I could find out what happened after the point the book ended. It's such a sad story, but I've never been able to get it out of my mind.
