Just read that Hugh Edwards ahs been given a suspended sentence.

And if course it's not his fault. He had a mean Daddy and some mental health issues and some bad things going on in his life, poor lamb.

All that made him say 'amazing' when sent photos of children as young as 7 being molested.

Having a rough time and a strict father doesn't make you a fucking paedophile!!!

Take responsibility for your predatory and vile behaviour!!

Standard then.

I know what my appropriate course of intervention would be- chemical castration and imprisonment.

Yes, how dare women discuss things with other women? You're so right - I'm off to conjure up some spare time to overhaul the British legal system.

You’re welcome to discuss it on MN - my original ask was for the PP to be less scathing about those of us who are sacrificing time with our family and in furthering our careers in order to help deliver justice, in particularly if they themselves are not willing to make that sacrifice.

It’s feasible I might hand down a suspended sentence in similar circumstances, and I don’t appreciate the implication that I should be investigated as a paedophile or paedophile sympathiser because of that. I’m actually a volunteer trying to do my best within the law and the guidance provided to me.

OhMyGodAChicken · 16/09/2024 15:07

With most female prison inmates jailed for non-violent offences, including non-payment of TV licences, it's time to release female prisoners and use the space for violent men.

Naunet · 16/09/2024 14:58

Then why post the absolute nonsenses you did as if we should take comfort in it? You seem very keen to defend a broken system.

If that’s your interpretation, that’s for you to consider. I haven’t labelled any of your posts ‘nonsense’, even when I disagree with them, so it’s a shame you need to be discourteous to make your point. To address your final sentence, I work in the system and I hate what it’s become, but it’s easier to fix it from the inside than it is from outside.

scotmum1234 · 16/09/2024 15:07

Its gut wrenching, a world made for man - where these crimes are not taken seriously (but join a riot and straight to jail) . Abhorrent and I share your sentiments OP.

NCmybloodyfather · 16/09/2024 15:07

Don't forget the sob story about not getting into Oxford. I'm raging.

AGirlInACountrySong · 16/09/2024 15:06

@Weiredeout

Why 'build more prisons'??

Who is going to staff them?? Nobody wants the job. Prison service is on its knees

Weiredeout · 16/09/2024 15:05

I think perhaps need to remove men from making the decisions on csa. As there just seems to lenient a system and perhaps collusion?

However the other person had also got suspended sentence.

Also --- build more prisons!

KnickerlessParsons · 16/09/2024 14:57

He's as good as in prison. Where can he go in this country without being recognised? He doesn't even really need a tag - he can't go out.

His career is over. What can he really do? Volunteer perhaps, but who'd have him? He wouldn't pass a DBS investigation.

He's been living with his mother - I won't say where, but South Wales is a small community and locals know where he is. He's 63, so she must be mid 80s at least.

He really has no life now.

I think they should have banned him for life from using the internet/social media too, but I'm not sure that's possible.

More fool his mother for having him there! If it's anythkng like around here them windows will be smashed in before you can say suspended sentence!

KnickerlessParsons · 16/09/2024 15:04

A suspended sentence is no deterrent at all

Ridiculous thing to say.

This isn't the thread for NAMALT.

Exactly.

Absolutely not the space for oh no not my Nigel.

ilovesooty · 16/09/2024 13:19

He was never going to get a stiffer sentence than the one handed out to the man who sent him the images. He also has to do a sex offending course and will be on the sex offenders register for seven years. He will be punished and humiliated by his reputation being ruined and being defined by society by the offences he has committed. There would be no purpose in sending him to prison.

Oh well that's ok then.

FFS the bar is getting lower by the day.

AGirlInACountrySong · 16/09/2024 15:01

Yes, he absolutely CAN be banned from the internet !! It might be part of his conditions

poppymango · 16/09/2024 15:01

WinterMorn · 16/09/2024 13:27

Because there will be more chance time wise of getting him on an appropriate course of intervention if he remains in the community. On top of that, if we imprisoned everyone doing this the prisons really would overflow within 24 hours.

Aye but maybe there’d be more of a deterrent so they might not do it in the first place. A suspended sentence is no deterrent at all.

Haroldwilson · 16/09/2024 14:59

Allthehorsesintheworld · 16/09/2024 14:51

He and his highly paid barrister had had weeks to dream up excuses.
Listening to the Jeremy Vine show today it seems the majority of paedophiles making images, selling images etc get suspended sentences. So why would it ever stop?
No one stands up for these kids whose lives are ruined by this abuse. The cruelty they go through, how their mental health must be destroyed is never mentioned.

I really wish all sex offenders could hang.

If you have a suspended sentence, it becomes a prison sentence if you reoffend.

If convicted of subsequent offences, you're more likely to have a custodial sentence due to previous offences that received a suspended sentence.

There will have been victim statements in court.

Naunet · 16/09/2024 14:59

HoppityBun · 16/09/2024 14:58

Where’s the evidence that imprisonment makes it stop?

Whilst they’re in prison, of course it bloody stops!

AGirlInACountrySong · 16/09/2024 14:59

@AccidentallyWesAnderson I know I am. I'm also free to post here

It's unpalatable to think it, but how do you think these photos come about? Mumsnet seems to love threads about sending DC off on sleepovers to random families where they just 'know' their kids are safe 🤔

As for Edwards, I suspect his conditions will be breached and he will end up serving custodial. Lots do.

So having a "puritanical" father makes you a paedophile?

Who knew........

rainsofcastamere · 16/09/2024 14:58

So you don't think a court should know if, for example the convicted has engaged with therapy versus saying they'd do it again. Or were experiencing psychosis/mania or off their head on drugs at the time. Or have a life limiting illness. Or committed offences in company of coercive person they've now broken contact with. Etc.

Mitigation isn't the same as 'things that make it ok to have done this'. It's things to be taken into account on the whole, when deciding a suitable sentence. The range of sentences is set out, the judge looks at aggravating and mitigating factors to work out what's appropriate.

@Haroldwilson

Do you believe that there are any fair 'mitigating circumstances' that should allow a man downloading, viewing and wanking over images of children being abused and raped, to have a lesser sentence?

What are those mitigating circumstances?

KnickerlessParsons · 16/09/2024 14:57

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 16/09/2024 14:56

What got me was his legal team submitting "remorse" as a reason for mitigation. Of course he is remorseful, he got caught! Bet you any amount of money he wouldn't have just given it all up by himself.

He was obviously aware that he should cover his arse by saying nothing underage to have an audit trail. He received images that were clearly of primary age children and did not object. Why he hasn't been jailed is beyond me.

This is worth reading. What a brave man. Offensively to women and men like him (and the man I know) to suggest childhood trauma is ever an excuse for an adult to abuse children.

Mitigating circumstances are relevant for some crimes but not child abuse. Many women and men were abused as children and do not become child abusers when they're adults.
