You do know you don't leave the shit in the nappy don't you?! It goes down the toilet and the liner thrown away

Same with wipes, clean them off and pop them in the bucket for soaking before washing

Pre the 80s I'd say almost everyone was reusable nappies? I was born in the 80s and was in them and I used them for DS.

I find it more grim to see used nappies lying around and spilling out of nappy bins in public toilets or strewn across pavements because people have secure their bin bags in bins properly

Saves a fortune too, using reusable

Fine if it’s solid poo! Curry splats- no!

I think some people didn't pay much attention in Science at school!

what are reusable wipes?
flannels?

Basically yeah. You can get all kinds of fancy specially made ones but I just used cheap flannels, dunked in warm water.
DS is now nearly 17 and I still use the wipes as floor cloths, dusters etc.

Yes we do, and it’s unhygienic , but don’t start that again!

How on earth is washing items in hot water, with a detergent, unhygienic?!

😂 don't worry I won't

Though how the poster thought handwashing a tea towel was more hygienic than a 60 degree wash was funny as was her further statement that she handwashed at hotter than 60 degrees and wasn't at all hot on her hands was even funnier!

Badly!

Yet here we all are! Healthy, over-populating the world and filling it up with rubbish that really isn't needed.

How do you think people managed before wipes became common 30ish years ago?
Wipes are terrible for the environment.

ahem i used wipes 30 years ago
although in the early days i used cotton wool and water, and then baby lotion

justasking111 · 15/09/2024 20:11

Can you still get napisan?

I still buy Milton's for cleaning out the fridge.

Between this thread and the one where people were called disgusting and gross for washing tea towels and bath towels together or tea towels and clothes together, all it confirms is people are really confused by and don't understand washing machines 😂

Presumably your underwear isn’t covered with wee and faeces when you Chuck them in the washing machine?

I've seen posts on here before where posters complaln about their husbands skidmarks in their pants, so wouldn't be too sure on that

Bignanna · 15/09/2024 20:10

Bandstander · 15/09/2024 20:04

My whole family uses reusable wipes 🤷‍♀️ they go in the washing machine with the baby’s nappies every two days. Why do you find them so gross?

Presumably soaked in something like napisan first.

justasking111 · 15/09/2024 20:09

I used damp cotton wool to wipe bottoms and Terry nappies. Muslins too. I do admit I did keep in a pack of disposables in case of emergencies.

Wet wipes I never really took to I did feel guilty environmentally. But kept a pack in the baby bag just incase.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 15/09/2024 20:09

And funny how many of these planet saving ideas end up generating more work for women. I’ve not yet seen the idea that has men washing shitty cloths

It's only more work for women if the woman is doing the laundry. That may be the norm, but that's not the fault of reusable wipes. It's the fault of men who do fuck all.

My DH is perfectly capable of doing the washing, and does it regularly.

Badly!

Bignanna · 15/09/2024 20:08

MarvellousDay · 15/09/2024 18:21

Why do you think they are gross.. I found they were amazing and much better to clean. If their nappy leaks surely you don't throw away the outfit. This is similar. You also don't throw away your underwear after every use. If you don't think your washing machine does a good enough cleaning job you need another one.

Presumably your underwear isn’t covered with wee and faeces when you Chuck them in the washing machine?

I’m with you OP. And funny how many of these planet saving ideas end up generating more work for women. I’ve not yet seen the idea that has men washing shitty cloths.

My partner does the laundry more than me, and throwing wipes from a basket into a machine isn’t too taxing anyway

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 15/09/2024 20:06

I cannot fathom how someone can put it anywhere near their machine!

Did you throw away any baby clothes that got poo on them? Didn't you just wash them?

Last night DD2 threw up a couple of times over her bedding. That went in the washing machine as well after a rinse. Washing machines do get gross stuff in them fairly often.

I actually didn't use reusable wipes, but not because I thought they were gross. I do use reusable period pads though.

MagdaLenor · 15/09/2024 20:06

Pigtailsandall · 15/09/2024 20:03

We had reusable wipes for our baby, and another set for weaning/feeding. And reusable nappies. My husband was totally competent in throwing them in the machine, drying them and putting them back to where they belong. Welcome to modern times.

It's funny how so many of the men on here managed it perfectly well! I think some women have low expectations of the men in their lives.

RosesAndHellebores · 15/09/2024 20:06

UmmJsTL3 · 15/09/2024 19:11

@TheYearOfSmallThings yep exactly! I cannot fathom how someone can put it anywhere near their machine!

You soak them first. It's a very similar principle to face flannels and dishcloths.

Are there other things you are precious about? Touching meat? Gardening? Mucking out? What on earth will you do when your baby grows up a little and brings home: worms, nits, etc?

isthismylifenow · 15/09/2024 20:04

Roundaboot · 15/09/2024 19:49

I personally find disposable wipes and nappies really gross. We get fortnightly waste collection here, which I think is fairly common so I'd have shitty wipes and nappies hanging around for a couple of weeks. When DS was in nappies I was doing a wash about twice a week so nothing was ever hanging around for too long
Also the concept of wrapping shit in layers of plastic and sending it off to landfill where it'll fester for hundreds of years is really disgusting!

As I used full time cloth with both of mine (apart from the odd illness) when my friend would come over with her same age baby, I could smell when she had done a wee in her disposable nappy.

If you are not used to that smell, it is very noticeable.
