@SecondFavouriteDinosaur I have honestly never heard that you’re supposed to take the poo out and into a toilet. I have literally never done that and had no issues using disposables.

You thought it was normal to just send whole shits to landfill?

UmmJsTL3 · 15/09/2024 22:28

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 15/09/2024 19:57

Exactly this. The number of people I’ve seen just wrap up a massive poo in a nappy and put it in the bin 🤢. I’m not sure people realise (or care?) that you’re supposed to put the solid poo down the toilet, even if you’re using disposables. All that shit sat in landfill.

Forgot to say OP I not only use reusable nappies... I bought them all... SECONDHAND 😁😬.

Yes, I also used second hand reusable nappies. Then I passed them on to a third baby! How great for the planet, we all thought.

Ew. No. This is where I draw the line 🤣 would never use reusable wipes absolutely unhygienic and gross.

Why are they unhygienic?

justleggingsandatee · 15/09/2024 21:56

No, I think the throwaway, disposable attitude is gross.

The earth is dying, wise up.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 15/09/2024 21:46

I used cloth nappies for all of my children, reusable washable wipes, and use cloth sanitary pads.

I own a washing machine, like 99.9% of the UK.

Eh?

PicklerOfCrochet · 15/09/2024 21:41

This thread is making me feel very old. I was born in the 1970s, we were all in reusable terry nappies, a giant square of cloth folded into a triangle and the wrapped around us, held with a giant safety pin and a pair of "rubbers" or basically waterproof pants that went over the top. Maybe a liner too inside. One of my earliest memories is the sound of the snapping when my Mum was shaking out the nappy after it was washed to put it on the washing line. These were for my little sister.

My own children had reusable nappies. I have no idea why people think this is labour intensive. I have used reusable period products for 20 years.

It worries me that despite access to the internet people cannot understand how a washing machine gets things clean with detergents and anti-bac products like Dettol laundry. Also does this mean that every time a nappy leaks people are binning the clothing? What if it leaks into the car seat?

How do you think people managed before wipes became common 30ish years ago?
Wipes are terrible for the environment.

We used cotton wool and a bowl of warm water 👌🏻

HideTheCroissants · 15/09/2024 21:41

My DCs are in their 20s now, I only used disposable wipes if we were out and about. At home I used water and squares of muslin. We all survived and we did our bit for the planet.

What would OP do if there was a poonami that spiked the cot sheet? Surely you wash it and reuse it!

You sterilise them before reuse !

How old are you? If you’re over 40 (doesn’t sound like it TBF, with ‘ew’ and ‘gross’) your parents probably used them on you.

Cute 🤣🤣🤣

Can someone let me know how they wash the baby's reusable wipes. Do they go into a bucket of water then into the washing machine
If there is lots of poo on them do you try and get that off first somehow or just hope the bucket of water does the trick
Also how do you clean the bucket? Sorry if I sound clueless! I am!

Never needed a bucket to sit with them in myself - stuff went down the toilet, flush whilst holding very tightly onto the end for a rinse, straight into washing machine already loaded with powder, machine went on by the evening with babygros, vests, flannels, teatowels/floorcloths and a bathtowel or two that had residual emollient or other Psoriasis treatments on them to make up the load. Open up the machine in the morning to hang up, whole cycle started again. Switch out the towels for bedlinen every other day (3 beds, one set on Tuesday, one Thursday, one Saturday)

Derwent01 · 15/09/2024 21:11

one use only

Cazziebo · 15/09/2024 21:09

DD1 is now 34 and I still use her nappies for cleaning, dusting, face cloths etc! They are invincible.

When my DCs were young, I didn't have a car and it was impossible to carry disposables (not vacuum packed in the early 90s) home with a pram and groceries. I'm not sure wet wipes were widely available then.

Neither DC caught anything terrible from the lack of wet wipes.

suburburban · 15/09/2024 21:08

I remember my dd using these on dgd. Think she had a box for them and a dirty bag

ghostyslovesheets · 15/09/2024 21:05

I know it's shocking OP but I use napkins to wipe my face after eating, cotton pads for face cleaning and period pants and they ALL go in the wash together - no one has died yet - because washing things makes them clean - who knew

notbelieved · 15/09/2024 21:01

Rainallnight · 15/09/2024 18:28

I’m with you OP. And funny how many of these planet saving ideas end up generating more work for women. I’ve not yet seen the idea that has men washing shitty cloths.

You know there's no law.against men putting them in a washing machine and turning it.on, don't you?

That is what I did. Into a bucket and then wash when there was a load. There were nappies in there too though.

Then I would either soak in water with a bit of tea tree oil (I didn't even use Napisan) or sometimes just dry into the bucket.

I just cut up some old Terry clothes and flannels to use as the wipes. I would also make up a chamomile tea and soak the wipes in this. I don't even know now why I used chamomile as I don't remember many bum rashes at all. My DC are 25 and 22 now, so it was a while back.

I still have the nappies which have come in handy for all sorts. They were Bambino Mio and I remember getting a subsidy from the council to buy them.

They have most certainly paid for themselves over and over.

bakewellbride · 15/09/2024 20:58

@JG24

The nappies and wipes went in a lidded bucket that had a mesh bag inside but nothing else, no water or anything.

Once bucket got full, lift mesh bag out and chuck in machine. So you don't even need to touch any wipes or anything.

Quick spray of bucket with cleaning spray then wipe with special nappy bucket cleaning cloth. Add cloth to washing machine. Put fresh clean mesh bag in bucket so the bucket is good to go again.

Wash at 40 degrees with powder.

The above literally took me 3 mins.

And I never recall any actual poo being on the wipes so that was never really an issue.

The poo went in either a disposable liner which got binned or a fleece liner- in which case I just tipped the poo down the toilet. Very occasionally binned a cloth nappy if it was very pooey and I didn't feel it could be salvaged.

Ponderingwindow · 15/09/2024 20:55

We had a spray hose hooked up to our toilet water line so we could rinse off any particularly bad ones.

we used a dry pail

had enough nappies and wipes to wash every 2-3 days. Just used the sanitary cycle.

Sun eliminates stains

I just think it’s gross… we don’t do that as adults!!!

We should be though OP, it's much better for the planet. We just want convenience all the time now, fuck the planet, we'll all be long gone when it burns.......that seems to be the attitude people have.
I use reusable sanitary towels and they are so much comfier than the throw aways made from really soft material, the chemicals in the throwaway ones aren't great for you either apparently. Obviously not great when you're on the go but I work from home so it suits me.
