To think it's ridiculous to fall out over a Facebook post ?

I posted on here yesterday as my mom and I had an argument on the last day of our holiday. It basically ended with me saying, apologise for your part in this argument (that she started) or I'm done with you both. As a result I said she will miss out on her granddaughter growing up. This was really not nice of me to say, but she was giving me the silent treatment and acting like a kid so I said whatever I could to get a reaction. She had been goading me all afternoon.

My mom has a real issue with admitting when she's in the wrong and is as stubborn as mule. I'm 33 with a 5 month old little girl and my parents and I have always been close, but my mom can be needy and a bit emotionally controlling. I don't think I need to go into that here, I just want to know if I'm being unreasonable. I don't think I am.

So after this argument we travelled back from holiday not talking, and the day afterwards I put my usual holiday Facebook post with a few snaps. There were none of my parents (my mom refuses to be in photos 90% of the time and obviously they were all of my precious baby on her first holiday!) and I didn't tag anyone in the post, not even my husband.
I texted her the same morning to apologise for my part in the argument and the nasty things I said, but asked if she could accept that she started it over nothing. She could not, and she said "agree to disagree". I reluctantly agreed. I'm fully aware that if I hadn't have made the first move, she wouldn't not have messaged me. Later on in the day, she texts me to say that she "hurt" because I didn't mention in my post that she and my dad were on holiday with us. My post was "lovely holiday with my little family". I explained we weren't talking at the time I posted, plus I haven't tagged anyone and there's no pictures of them to tag. She ignored that message and now we aren't talking. I actually feel a bit more relaxed now I'm having a break from her if I'm honest but I'm sad it's ended this way and don't see a way back.

AIBU to think it's pathetic for my mom to abandon myself and her granddaughter for the sake of a Facebook post?

Obvs don't know who is right or who is wrong, but one thing I do know - adults on Facebook or Instagram? V.strange and even stranger falling out over not being mentioned on these platforms.

🙄

TheShellBeach · 15/09/2024 14:20

Why did you go on holiday with her and the dogs, if it was going to cause this level of angst?

You both sound awful and childish.

You need to grow up. And stop going on holiday with your mum.

Honestly I think you both sound as bad as each other here. Threatening your mum with not seeing her grandchild over a silly argument is way OTT.

I agree, you both sounds unreasonable. Also I don't understand why you are going on holiday together if she is as dreadful as you say.

honeylulu · 15/09/2024 14:10

OK I've now read the original post and the mother does sound a total nightmare who would likely even cause a saint to flip their lid.

I still think you shouldn't go on holiday together!

Ragruggers · 15/09/2024 14:06

So much drama.Do you actually enjoy being with your mother? If the answer is no then step away.Dont go on holiday with her make your own plans with your DH and child.Get on with your own life go very low contact for a few months and see what happens. It seems your mother is looking for a reaction from you which you give her this is not healthy.

Fastback · 15/09/2024 14:02

People have become way too comfortable with victim blaming to boost their own self esteem on here. It’s actually unsettling.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 15/09/2024 14:02

CuriousGeorge80 · 15/09/2024 12:57

Your FB post does read as intentionally spiteful. “My little family” implies you were there with your partner and child only. It seems pretty intentional given the context.

So I agree with PP that you both sound as bad as each other.

Can’t for the life of me fathom why you go on holiday year after year when you quite clearly act like a couple of badly behaved kids.

You behaved pretty awfully, and people don’t seem to be buying that it was an innocent Facebook post.

Fastback · 15/09/2024 13:59

Doggomom91 · 15/09/2024 13:01

I totally agree. It is childish, and I feel like an idiot for even being sucked into it. My mom always finds something to argue about and without context this post probably seems like I'm more unreasonable than I am. I've had years of emotional blackmail from this woman, her constantly on competition with my in-laws, being jealous when I make friends or seek support from professionals with my mental health. She thinks she should be all I need in my life.

Are all the ‘team mum’ posters too dense to understand the above from the OP? 😬

Fastback · 15/09/2024 13:57

I think some posters are not appreciating that the mother is needy and emotionally controlling. Likely emotionally abusive. The OP won’t be able to clearly see through this or possibly even articulate it as she’s glossed over it slightly in her OP. I’d say this is the latest in a long line of abusive and manipulative interactions with the mother, which is why the OP is feeling ‘done’ with the relationship.

DeCaray · 15/09/2024 13:55

Team mum.

'but she was giving me the silent treatment and acting like a kid so I said whatever I could to get a reaction. She had been goading me all afternoon.'

You contracted yourself there by saying she had given you the silent treatment but then to say she had been goading you.

Awful childish nonsense.

TheShellBeach · 15/09/2024 13:49

Nonsense.
You posted the exact same thread, near enough.

I also had responses of 86% of people saying I was not being unreasonable, yet this one, apparently I am the unreasonable one. So it's clearly not the same thread is it?

MotherOfABoobAddict · 15/09/2024 13:53

I think the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

honeylulu · 15/09/2024 13:53

Your mum sounds like a pain but you don't sound innocent yourself. The apology for your part in the argument was a bit hollow because it was conditional on her also apologising and taking the blame.

Then the "my little family" post was intended to goad her, wasn't it? It certainly implies you, partner and baby only. You would have known she'd see it as a dig. It sounds like you were annoyed she hadn't apologised so you thought you'd needle her a bit more.

Honestly I've no idea why you go on holiday together year after year when you know that you lock horns like this.

Noseybookworm · 15/09/2024 13:53

You both sound exhausting to be honest. Just leave her alone for now and hopefully you'll both have gained a bit more perspective in a few weeks!

WiddlinDiddlin · 15/09/2024 13:52

You're getting the responses you are, @Doggomom91 because you've missed the back story about your Mother and her previous behaviour.

With that back story, no I don't think you were particularly unreasonable, however knowing that she would see your FB post, I think you probably did know that not mentioning their presence and 'my little family' probably would provoke a response from her... You've known her a long time, you know exactly what will rattle her cage after all.

Given the back story... I would distance myself from her. Don't set yourself up to be anywhere with her that you cannot just leave with zero fuss/aggro.

Set yourself some clear boundaries on what behaviour you'll tolerate and what you won't and end the interaction any time and every time she steps foot over that boundary.

When you do this, give the same vague, pleasant, not angry or shouty, response - 'Oh dear Mom, I have to go now, see you another time' ... and hang up/leave.

Eventually she is going to realise what behaviour of hers it is that triggers this, and hopefully she'll stop it.

You clearly won't take responsibility for your part in this.
It all sounds terribly petty.

And yes, your post on FB about "my little family" was PA, meant to be hurtful, and yes, was poking the bear.

Combattingthemoaners · 15/09/2024 13:51

It sounds like you knew exactly what you were doing when you chose those pictures and that title. Provoking a reaction…..and you got one. I honestly don’t know how anyone can be bothered with this type of drama as an adult.

allatseawiththis · 15/09/2024 13:49

OP, you’ve had loads of good advice (and a lot of sympathy) on the thread from yesterday which it would probably help you to reflect on. I understand that you’re angry and upset but I don’t think a thread about the same thing the very next day is going to help you (especially as this one comes across as more antagonistic).

OriginalUsername2 · 15/09/2024 13:49

Forced apologies aren’t real anyway are they.

I think “say sorry” should be reserved for children learning manners. If you’re sorry as an adult, you say it of your own accord, when it feels right.

TheShellBeach · 15/09/2024 13:49

Doggomom91 · 15/09/2024 12:58

No, I posted about the initial argument (see first line of post)

Nonsense.
