Glad to see justice finally. These crimes go back to 2003-2008. But what protections are in place now to prevent the same abuse? The victims here were in the care system and so badly let down. Where were the adults who were responsible for these children some as young as 11?

Operation Stovewood: Seven jailed for child abuse in Rotherham

The case is part of the Operation Stovewood inquiry into child abuse in Rotherham.

It breaks my heart to hear there's still monsters who target children.

I spent a lot of my childhood in care. Foster care wasn't too bad but once I got to my teens it was always care homes. And these predators would be circling us like prey. Our social workers would warn us, they tried to get police involved but they didn't care.

I won't go into details but there was an incident and I was taken by a man. When I escaped I was taken to a police station. I was then told that as I'd taken money in the past from this man that I could be charged with soliciting. I clammed right up.

It seems not a lot has changed over the years.

Absolute bullshit. They did it because of laziness, incompetence, and not giving the slightest shit about violence against women and girls.

No, there is a documentary on it. Journalists admitted they didn't cover the case due to perceived racism/fuelling racial divisions and it was one of the reasons that those who went to police were silenced as well.

Tattletwat · 15/09/2024 14:14

Yep there Is certain areas that aren't policed even parking warden are instructed by council not to go to certain areas for being considered racist (how can a parked car have a race)

You only have to go and watch the main square or near Clifton park where certain groups hang out and still did during the scandal to see it's still happening even COVID didn't stop them.

I'm not doubting you but could you say a bit more of what it is that is happening in this area. We are told by our leaders that 'no go' areas are a myth but unless we tackle it and there is more honesty from the police and other authorities nothing will change.

One of the most damning aspects seems to be the attitude of the authorities that the girls were not viewed as victims for a very long time. Their lives were not valued. It's terrible. I sit through yearly Safeguarding training and there is no excuse for anyone to ever turn a blind eye.

You are thinking of Rochdale, Galloway has never been a MP on Rotherham.

We have the same labour council and same labour MP since the scandal, the previous labour one had to resign due to corruption. but she has international aspirations and her focus is on that rather than the town.

A number of the abuse allegations included members of the council and a man made a Lord by tony Blair's government was a sexual abuser.

I'm no Tory supporter but the above is why I detest the labour party so much in my town as they have systemically destroyed it.

Christ if I had a brain that worked

I do not know why I got those mixed up, thank you for the correction.

I also live in the area and the consensus it's that these poor girls were let down by so many of the the people who should have protected them.
The main cause the police/ care homes/ the council were petrified of being branded racist, so they turned a blind eye to the abuse.

Shame on them.

I bet that useless prick George Galloway didn't do a damned thing do address it when he was the MP for the short amount of time that he was.

This, I hate when the media group the total of all the prison sentences together.

6 years for one, 15 years for another etc for ruining that many children’s lives doesn’t sound like justice is served to me.

They do that to minimise the individual impact, because they're also fucking useless.

coatfromjamesdean · 15/09/2024 13:55

MrsSkylerWhite · 15/09/2024 12:40

Big headline figure but between 7, not so long considering what they did. Will they be out early with “good behaviour”?

I’m very glad that their heinous behaviour will be very much frowned upon by fellow inmates. Perhaps they’ll understand how it feels to be fearful every day. Good.

The people who were being paid to care for these children should also be charged with neglect.

Don't forget what the police said, the girls being drugged, raped and blackmailed had made a lifestyle choice.

And the reason so many agencies did nothing, was because they were terrified of being accused of racism.

And yet that ‘care’ costs a fortune - a lot more per year than an elite boarding school! It’s a disgrace.

Look how long things went on with Jimmy Savile. Money has never been an object when it comes to filthy men abusing children.

Yet again (!) victims left unprotected because of lack of basic safeguarding. Care home staff standing by and waving off young girls who were being picked up by strange men.

Teachers observing young girls being picked up outside school gates, police ignoring reports of abuse saying it's a lifestyle choice. Members of the community covering up for a load of paedophiles and predators.

The Council and various departments dismissing repeated reports and letting this continue unabated for years.

Every single person who let down those girls should be sacked and prosecuted for colluding in child abuse.

Dirty bastards.

Once kids go into care, there's little hope for them I'm afraid. They get trafficked and abused left right and centre.

Anyone who allowed this predatory behaviour to continue unabated, should be prosecuted.

Yes, this is what I keep thinking. We're not talking about the 70's or 80's. This happened under the noses of social workers, foster parents etc trained in child Safeguarding.

Given prison overcrowding and the record of this government, they'll all be out by Christmas.

Scum of the earth these men are.

I find it hard to understand how it was allowed to go on in plain sight and for so long. Adult men picking up children from their homes?

offyoujollywelltrot · 15/09/2024 12:48

I read Maggie Oliver Oliver's book "Survivors" recently. It was very eye opening. I also watched her on , and she mentions how the police didn't record the statistics about who was raping the girls, because they didn't want them to be recorded.

It's a disgusting mess.

These girls, some of the most vulnerable in society, were treated like scum and completely dismissed by systemic misogyny.

I hope these convictions provide them with a modicum of comfort and that they have the help and support they need.

Anyone who allowed this predatory behaviour to continue unabated, should be prosecuted.

Agree, and even in prison they will be with other like-minded offenders.
