Joggers spitting - to think it’s unnecessary

As the title suggests.

Lovely walk this morning in my local national trust park. Big group of men and women (local jogging club) run by. Half of them hacking out massive globs of spit and spitting onto the path - not even off it which tbh is vile in itself - but straight onto the only path around the lake.

AIBU to think it it’s unnecessary and disgusting? I know asthmatics (such as myself) can struggle with excess phlegm - but for goodness sake, you do not need to spit. If you are struggling stop sodding exercising - don’t spit up all over the sodding path you grim wankers.

It’s disgusting. I hate seeing footballers do it on the pitch as well. Totally unnecessary.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 15/09/2024 11:07

I have spat once and it was a very cold day and I had a very blocked nose but I was super embarrassed and did it well away from the path. Always took a tissue after that.

Its not so much runners i see apitting as just blokes walking, it is gross

OverthinkingOlive · 15/09/2024 10:51

Spitting is absolutely fucking revolting and people should be fined for doing it. I absolutely hate it. Vile!!

lljkk · 15/09/2024 10:49

cycling is when my nose can run like crazy. Running less so, but not unheard of when running. And then it backs up in the sinuses so desperately has to come out somewhere.

Codlingmoths · 15/09/2024 10:44

Oh dear, I did it today! I almost never do and think it’s a bit disgusting, but sometimes it really feels like what you need to do. I try not to let anyone see me.

Of course it is. They might not want to, but they can. They choose to be vile instead.

BobbyBiscuits · 15/09/2024 10:37

You'd think they could use a study hanky or tissue if there's some scientific reason for the need to spit. My dad used to make me feel queasy when we were out walking, he'd hack these awful lumps of phlegm all over the road. In between chain smoking silk cut. The poor guy wasn't well but all I remember is how disgusting it looked and sounded.

Anonymous2224 · 15/09/2024 10:36

porobably get flamed but I don’t think I’d get not hung up about runners spitting tbh, generally it’s gross and seeing guys doing it for no good reason than because they think it makes them look hard is revolting but someone doing something worth while for their body, might be new to running and struggling with the excessive saliva in their mouth as they adjust? Meh as long as they do it discreetly and not as someone walks by I couldn’t really care. Funny that everyone on this tread is so disgusted by this but a dog pissing and shitting everywhere (yes even when picked up leaves a shitty reside on the ground) is fine 🤷‍♀️

BlueglassesBlondehair · 15/09/2024 10:31

I bet they can manage to find something to put their phone and water in so it wouldn’t be hard to carry a tissue or small bag or pot . Although maybe not a bag as then will there be bags of joggers snot joining the bags of dog shit hanging off trees

😂😂😂 jogging with a little tin pot?! Where would they put the tissue? That is 100% not a solution.

Don’t they have hands or pockets or one of those running vest things people wear?

Sunnysundayicecream · 15/09/2024 10:27

Ha , I'm going to go against the grain.
I've been a runner for 20 years, always off road, but think your not running hard enough if you don't need to spit! I've run for England in my time and can tell you sometimes I come back a spitty snotty mess!

MoreCardassianThanKardashian · 15/09/2024 10:27

@Pigeonqueen the amount they spit you'd fill the pockets quickly. But thanks for putting "THEY HAVE POCKETS!!!!!!!!" into my head 😂

nirishism · 15/09/2024 10:26

Beyond disgusting. It should be fined the same way dropping gum or cigarette butts on the ground is. It’s littering and biohazard. Honestly don’t know why anyone considers it remotely acceptable. And as for the people who randomly spit walking down the street - just WTF? Grim.

SarahRoseJane · 15/09/2024 10:23

It makes me feel sick- not necessary at all
🤢

You can tuck the tissue etc into your leggings / joggers - many have pockets now.

MugPlate · 15/09/2024 10:19

Never seen a woman runner spit. Loads of men do. Park path dotted with mucus and dog poo.

BlueglassesBlondehair · 15/09/2024 10:12

Why can’t they take a tissue or a pot to spit into which can then go in the bin

I find spitting disgusting. Have you watched football? They're all at it. It's a thing but that doesn't make it ok.

TiramisuThief · 15/09/2024 10:15

It's gross, I agree with you OP

I run and I have never spit. Always take tissues or wear a buff I use like a hanky.

Pigeonqueen · 15/09/2024 10:14

I’ve only ever seen men spitting (or boys). It’s absolutely disgusting and no need for it. I have severe asthma and can manage to go out without spitting.

Ljcrow · 15/09/2024 10:10

Any spitting in public is gross. And it's always boys/men.

rolandthefarter · 15/09/2024 09:57

I do get a bit snotty when running, especially in cold weather. But I carry a tissue for this reason.

I've noticed it's only male runners that do this where i live.

Every single person I have ever seen spit, runner / teen, is a man.
I've called out teens who do it and tell them to stop dribbling or wear a bib. They usually swear or look embarrassed.
