To report friend for fraud?

Bbttrr · 13/09/2024 22:19

NC as outing.

Friend "A" is working cash in hand whilst claiming benefits. Flaunts her outings, holidays, purchases etc online constantly. Openly advertises her cash in hand work on social media. Claims a healthy sum each month in benefits whilst living in a 1/4+ mil house.

Would IBU to report her?

Your friend is obviously in the wrong (if you have your facts straight), but nobody has died and you just don't grass people up, especially not friends.

Advise her not to flaunt it or some nasty, jealous person will report her though no doubt she will have a story ready.

Just leave it alone, it's not your business. Living on benefits is not easy. I understand it is permissible to earn a little whilst receiving benefits.

No it is not. If everyone did this the country would be even more bankrupt.

She is not stealing from the government, she is stealing from all the people who pay tax with her benefit fraud and working cash in hand so presumably not declaring her income and paying tax.

There is no magic money tree.

And don’t get me started on uk business owners who have moved offshore

Money which the government/state takes with menaces and under false pretenses.

jus saying ... but if that's how you choose to live your life 🤷‍♀️ guaranteed it will come back and bite you on the ass, grasses are universally regarded as the lowest of the low by people who move in sketchy circles. But if you want to be referred to as the coppers nark for the rest of your life - go for it.

A council house obviously as OP has alluded to taxpayers contributing towards it. If so, it doesn't matter how much it's worth because it belongs to the council or housing association. It's useful to state the worth to manipulate the responses though.

These shitposts are all the same.

Not necessarily, if she is in receipt of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit, that will come from tax payers

Universal Credit Fraud www.mumsnet.com/Talk/money-matters/5162765-universal-credit-fraud?msgid=-5162765#-5162765

MermaidMummy06 · 14/09/2024 01:55

I wouldn't, but I do understand the frustration. I've watched my DB & others who own businesses claim personal items, vehicles, leisure craft, travel etc as business expenses & pay almost no tax. It pisses me off when we pay full tax & full price for everything. But I'd do it too if I could & it'd be hypocritical!

I did comment to a friend about misuse of her DC's disability funding. It's meant for therapy & essential items & she was wasting it on horse riding lessons, not turning up for appointments (you pay regardless) & buying stuff for her DC's party & Xmas stockings. Quite proudly proclaiming it, too. As a consequence of people like her doing this, the govt is reducing our ability to manage funding ourselves & starting to dictate exactly what therapies & items we can use it for. My DS has funding & we've always been careful but will still pay the price. Fraud affects everyone.

1/4 Mill house
So 250k
Thats really not that much at all
What a weird way to put it

Weird comment. For two people and a pooled income, yes, £250k is fairly normal. But for one person, £250k is massive and the overwhelming majority of single earners would not be able to afford that home.

Maybe it is a quarter of a Mill House.

Years ago as a teenager I went to a party at Mill House in Rowfant - maybe the friend owns a quarter of this old house? 😆

JackGrealishsAliceBand · 13/09/2024 22:30

A 250k house is not (relatively) expensive 😂 you'd get a one bed flat here for that if you're lucky.

How do you know she's not declaring earnings? It's possible to work and claim benefits.

Oh and it's really not outing.

A £250k house is like a tiny starter flat in many parts of the country - and won't buy you a shoe box in others.

nextdoornightmares · 14/09/2024 01:14

I live in a lovely new 4 bed detached house which cost £350k. I moved this year from an equally lovely new 5 bed detached house which cost £215k in 2021. With a mortgage not a council house. Neither of them are in deprived areas nor do they have tiny bedrooms. Not every part of the UK has massively inflated house prices. Half of our monthly household income is made up of benefits.

Anyway, on the subject of your "friend", it's entirely possibly to work and claim benefits. My partner works full time. I could work too and still receive benefits. People are also allowed to work for cash and can declare that. You don't know anybody's individual circumstances. People in real life certainly don't know mine and probably don't realise we even get benefits. And even if she isn't being genuine, you aren't being some sort of martyr by reporting her.

Mind your own business.

Jumpingthruhoops · 14/09/2024 00:29

Well, no, because they are a FRIEND. If their behaviour is annoying you and you're beginning to resent them for how they generate their income, it's probably best you call time on the friendship.

Well yes. Its exactly the fact that she really doesn't generate her own income anymore and is playing the system. She's only doing minimal work and claiming UC to avoid anyone questioning how she's earning a living. That way no one asks how she's paid of her mortgage and is out of the country for months at a time.

However part of me thinks it might just be envy as she can swan around and not really work. I don't want to be that person though, especially as she's genuinely quite fun to know and maybe I'd do the same if I was her. Who knows.

I think I'll cool the friendship. She's not so bothered anyway as I don't have the money to join her on trips and expensive meals out these days.

When I was growing up there were women who would gossip about other women and tell everyone they must be on the game; this is just the modern version of that.

Oh yes, well spotted.

shuggles · 14/09/2024 00:39

@SpiderGwen Also keen to know location of detached 5 bedroom houses for £250K - we’d all like one, OP.

There's something called "Google." It's this thing called a "search engine" that can show you things that you are looking for.

They are in places where wealthy mumsnetters don't want to live- that's why they are cheap.

shuggles · 14/09/2024 00:38

fridaynight1 · 14/09/2024 00:27

A 5 bed detached house that is worth £250k? Don't be daft.

Edited

Why write daft things when a 30 second google search would show that there are indeed £250k 5 bed detached houses in the UK?

The reason why they are £250k is because they are in places where wealthy mumsnetters do not want to live. You don't pay for the house, you pay for the location.

I don't know why people are asking how it affects you. It's fairly obvious this behaviour affects every honest tax payer.

Yes but I don't think that's the issue for people. Report someone, by all means, but if you are going to do that, you can't in the next breath say they're a 'friend'.
People don't grass on their friends. Simple as that.

Dweetfidilove · 14/09/2024 00:32

'Friend' 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Jumpingthruhoops · 14/09/2024 00:29

TheBers2024 · 14/09/2024 00:17

You can't imagine how a friend benefiting from cheating the system becomes annoying? They weren't doing this when our friendship started.
But now I resent the fact she has access to a large pot of money, so can work very little and claim benefits because she can get away with it.

Well, no, because they are a FRIEND. If their behaviour is annoying you and you're beginning to resent them for how they generate their income, it's probably best you call time on the friendship.

As the amount of benefit fraud is roughly 2.8% in the UK, I think the 97.2% of honest claims is rather encouraging.

If you are “friends” with one of that 2.8%, shop them if you want to. But maybe reconsider your definition of Friendship.

shuggles · 14/09/2024 00:17

Leah5678 · 13/09/2024 23:24

It makes it sound like a lot. Deal or no deal kind of vibes. Really 250k is just a two bed terraced house in most parts of the country.

Actually, for one person, a £250k house IS a lot. Keep in mind that most houses are bought between two people, so that would be equivalent to a colossal £500k home.

TheBers2024 · 14/09/2024 00:17

Jumpingthruhoops · 13/09/2024 23:28

Er, no, this is not how you speak about a friend? I can't imagine a situation where someone living their own life would 'annoy' me. Just bizarre...
