Shopping Spree on Company Credit Card ?

Gremle · 13/09/2024 08:25

Ok so I know I’m partly unreasonable, but I am being totally U ?!

Ive resigned and leave in a week. I have already had my final pay.
For years my horrendous line manager wouldn’t sign off legitimate expenses to the point I no longer submitted them as she loved the power play (a whole other thread !).

So for about 5 years I have been paying for all my own stationery, batteries, toners, things like that. I wfh so no stationery cupboard to raid on the last day - I’m thinking of replacing all the things I’ve used and brought myself with my company credit card now before I hand it over.

They won’t know about it for at least a month, possibly longer. And even then it will just be legitimate expenses, not like a holiday or anything 😂

Someone tell me to do it …

The cheek 😂😂

This reminded me of a former Manager who brought his old, wonky wheelbarrow into work on his last day, and took him the company’s lovely new one !

He was on £100k plus 🙈

Laughing so much at this 😂

You may well laugh, but a former colleague, quite senior, when clearing out to retire had the lot, me and a friend helped him load a desk, three filing cabinets, a PC and monitor, a bin, and most obscurely a phone which would only work with the in house PBX system into his trailer - off he drove into happy retirement, the office actually cleared out😂it still raises a chuckle over a lunch break, mainly the IT manager musing if he's still waiting for that phone to ring😁

I would be more tempted to use the card to purchase a grand gesture as a leaving present. Something completely tasteless and useless, but defendable by you. Like a cushion with your Boss's face on, a hideous live, laugh, love sign for reception or a years supply of really disappointing biscuits.

Now you’re talking!

Thinking of all the things staff have asked me to order but Boss (budget holder) has said no - I could order it all before I left for them - now that’s definitely not theft 😁

And HR weren’t remotely bothered as they never replied to emails I cc’d them into.

Of course, but the fine art of the stationery cupboard raid is done over a protracted period - not all in one sweep!!

Furniture is more of a raid and run operation however! I don't know any colleagues who don't have work furniture😄

Laughing so much at this 😂

Can't you just put in an expenses sheet, send to your LM and cc HR / their boss (whoever is appropriate in your company) saying you expect this to be paid before you leave?

This.

Don't use the card. It'll be treated as theft.

Ask and ye shall receive, or at least be able to make a small fuss about it.

LlamaLoopy · 18/09/2024 15:09

And then wait for the legal action to recoup as it’s theft … my business regularly did it to people who tried this sort of thing

I find the best revenge is an honest review on Glassdoor

Tagyoureit · 18/09/2024 13:44

Why didn't you use the company credit card to purchase the items in the first place and just submit the receipts?

FckTheSchGateHuns · 18/09/2024 13:40

As much as I love a good justified vengeance story, this will backfire.
Just slate them on Glassdoor instead.

Cece54 · 18/09/2024 13:38

Awwww... I wanted to say "yes, do it" but I'll back down since almost nobody else agrees .... 😂But, you really should lodge an exit email stating her bullying attitude in refusing legitimate expenses. What I did once when I left a job that had a hateful boss was password protect several very important files that I knew he would need. I immediately thereafter 'forgot' the passwords. And, yes, I raided the stationery cupboard. Shame you WFH so can't even do that. Oh and the day before I left I made him a coffee laced with laxative !!!! Yes, utterly childish, but very satisfying. You leave, and don't ever look back. Good luck....

That would be theft.

Do people really 'raid the stationary cupboard'?

You should've dealt with the expenses issue at the time.

YABVU.

MyspecialMug · 18/09/2024 12:57

No, it'll go against you.
If you need a reference in the future etc.
Have some pride in yourself, and don't leave with an excuse for your manager to talk bad about you.

Zebedee999 · 18/09/2024 12:36

is it not possible to just document all your legitimate expenses with receiots and your claims over the years that have never been approved and submit the lot to the small claims court (forget what it is called nowadays)? That is what it is there for.

Swiftie1878 · 18/09/2024 12:27

Why didn’t you use the company CC to buy that stuff in the first place?

TOTALLY unreasonable to do it now, after the fact.

Infertilemyrtler · 18/09/2024 11:52

If you had the company credit card all along why weren't you using this to buy supplies instead of buying them yourself? Am i missing something?

TeaTowelQueen · 18/09/2024 11:50

If it's AMEX the responsibility will be joint and if the company can prove it was malicious then AMEX will chase you. Any other provider then your company will come after you. Walk away and just breathe in the freedom!

amyds2104 · 18/09/2024 11:24

Can you just not have things “fall” into your bag on the way out 😂😂😂 I’d be petty and steal toilet roll and feel well satisfied i had stooped to such levels.

Welshmonster · 18/09/2024 11:17

I would have stopped buying stuff a long time ago. When they asked why a document wasn’t ready I would have said there’s no ink. If you kept receipts for things then you can remove the items you bought with no come back

Gremle · 13/09/2024 12:41

Of course I’m not going to do this - if I was I would have done it already !

And yes, I did escalate it to boss’ boss at the time - the board are made up of volunteers, the chair of which was astonished that I was even submitting expenses ‘especially when they do their job voluntarily’ 🙈

When I got divorced there was ONE particular thing that I knew I had 50% rights to, I also knew it would really piss exH off if I insisted on it as he considered it "his".

Insisting on it would have prolonged the process and kept me tied into him for a longer period.

I opted for a VERY clean break and no need to have contact, apart from over the dc.

This is like a divorce. Go for a clean break, take the loss and get your life back would be my advice - you do not want to be dealing with email exchanges from them in the future.

@Gremle You could do an "exit email" and inform your rotten boss's boss that she refused to sign off legitimate expenses - and that this can be verified by checking with accounts - and that this is likely to be an issue going forward with new employees.

I love this reply - thanks Rotten 😊

No don’t do this unless you want the police on your doorstep.

pigletinthewoods · 13/09/2024 09:52

The time to pursue the expenses was when you were still there. I’m sure your manager has a manager too and the appropriate thing to do was to escalate at the time. If you didn’t want to do it, it was the choice you made for yourself.

What you’re considering is not only passive aggressive, it’s likely also theft.
